I’m currently at Full Sail (audio production) and had a brain fart on tempo mapping in ProTools and you made things so much simpler I love this tutorial. I love your vibes. I love the energy. 🙏Keep this up because you gained a new subscriber and surreal video watcher.😂❤
You are a life saver. I have a session due to hand over by midnight tonight. I was struggling to remember how to tempo map a song because I didn't have the need for so long.
Hi Mihindu, you probably already found the answer to this, but I ran into the same problem, when you're trying to do this with Midi, you have to make sure that your tracks are sample based and not tick based, click the little bottom left icon on the track that is a green metronome and change it to sample (the blue clock), this way it will work as shown in the video with midi tracks in pro tools, hope it helps!
Great video. Can you explain how do you do this tutorials, how do you set up the screen recorder software working with your Pro Tools interface and get the internal sound from the session. Thanks
Great video and great timing for me. I've just starting a project where we've imported audio from 50 songs, recorded 16 track analog in the late 80s. We're going to replace the drums using Drumtracker from Superior Drummer 3 and then remaster them entire project. The drummer had some tempo problems so converting the drums to MIDI and then fixing the performance is what they want to do. Again, timing of your video couldn't have been any better.
I have a question about standard common editing practice in Pro Tools: Assuming that the band played decently in time and there are no major timing errors and also assuming there no intended tempo changes in the song like fermatas and ritardandos, do you ever conform the whole band to the bpm of the click track, or do you always stretch and squeeze the grid to conform to a main instrument like the kick drum?
Thank you for learning some very useful tips. However, I would like to use Pro Tools to automatically retrieve the tempo of the track and input it into the project tempo map with just a few clicks, like the method used in Logic Pro. Isn’t this a feature that doesn’t exist in Pro Tools yet?
Command+I is grayed out for me. Any ideas? I imported a stereo file and I'm trying to create a tempo map from the song. Tab to transient is working find, but then Identify Beat is grayed out, not available.
I will try this as soon as i can find where protools lost it's plug-ins folder that is holding the plug-in called "click" because I have nothing else better to do except to teach a pro tools program to map a path to it's program folders to find a saved program session file with and it's pre-saved saved presets. Then when I'm done I will program the inserts to save a path to it's own pre-saved presets per insert.
So in order to create a tempo map for a very rubato performance, would you need to identify beats down to the quarter or eight? Great video by the way! Thank you.
Exactly, you would need to increase the resolution of your grid to quarter and eighth notes. In practise, what I normally do is vary the resolution according to my needs. So, for the most part of the song, I might just identify every bar, but in parts where I really want something important to happen (like matching a MIDI loop to a performed part), I might identify further divisions of a bar. Hope that helps and thanks for the feedback. Cheers from Jase
There has to be a faster way to do this.. In cakewalk, I only have to grab the audio track and drop it on the time-bar.. Melodyne internally will create a tempo map thru the entire project. You can even cut and paste it to another location and take the tempo map with it. Pro Tools has an easier way to do this, I saw it in a video last week. (Tho, I am using PT Studio V 2022.12
I tried this but every bar I add the it gets faster and faster. its dead on with the tempo but it started as quarter notes and now is a 64th notes. WHy? and How do I fix this?
Avid should develop their software, Logic is getting better... Cheaper, doesn't require iLock, has a big sound library, integrated pitch correction, beat mapping is faster... When I'm using Pro Tools I feel I'm in 2000...
When I try this, it simply moves the recording's beginning to where I said bar one was. When I tell it where bar two is, it speeds up the tempo of everything. What am I doing wrong?
That's GREAT sir, but what do you do when you identify beat ONE and the whole damn song jumps to the right and starts in the same damned place? Obviously this is happening to more people than I... so this video is missing something. VERY IMPORTANT at that... since I can't get past the VERY first minute of this tutorial with any useable data. thanks!
I´m trying this method but Pro Tools keeps sendimg me this error message: "The Bar/Beat Marker could not be created, because they are either too close or too far apart from a neighboring Bar/Beat Marker to support a valid tempo." Any help?
KernEnergieThrash This error is occasionally created when you enter in the wrong values. Make sure you are entering the new number in the "Bar" field when you use Identify Beat. If you accidently enter a number into the "Beat" or "Tick" field, you can get the error message you are talking about. Hope that helps. Cheers. Jase
Hi! I have a problem. I¿m trying to map a song using a bass track as reference since I don't have the luxury of having a drum pattern. Also, the performance tempo is shaky and the measure are uneven. Still, I need to create a mapping to incorporate Midi instruments, paste, delete or add measures. Any ideas how to do this? Been trying but the attacks are not always on one and it's hard to map. Also, for some reason, pro tools gives me very different tempos when i press Control+I. Any tips? Thanks mate. Cheers from Argentina.
If the attack is not on one, just set the value to what it should be on. 1/4 note push on the second bar = 1|4|000, 1/8 note push = 1|4|480 (960 ticks in a beat/2)
+Phillip Warda - sometimes when tempo mapping it will make bars longer or shorter, so your situation may actually not be a problem. But let me know with a little more specifics what's actually happening in your situation, so that i might be able to help.
+Andrew Eadie It may be because your tracks are "tick based" and not "sample based". In the video, if you look at the bottom left hand corner of the kick (where the name of the track is), you will see a blue icon. This designates what type positional reference the track is based on. In my case, it's "sample based". If your tracks have a green icon, it means they are "tick based". The upshot will be that if the tempo changes, the clips on tick based tracks may move. Generally, MIDI and instrument tracks are tick based, but audio tracks are sample based. Hope that helps.
Nice video but using whatever AI speech recognition typist is a bad idea, erm amusing, but not cool, erm you didn't even check the sub-titles to see what a hash it is. thanks
Thank you!! I am a pro tools user and have been for decades and I was always wondering how to do this... Thanks!!
Great to find this video. Being an alumni of AIM, I cherish all those sweet memories of my time at AIM. Love you AIM !

This is a gem! Thank you! Excited to try it on some tracks I've recorded without a metronome.
Thank you, you made it an easy and well explained task... but it was difficult with a heavily syncopated jazz drum track.
+balsampillow Thanks for the comment. I imagine trying to do that on a jazz track would have taken a long, long time!
lol Try turning on the subtitles and watch this. It had me dying

command+I is grey in my Protools i use in my laptop, is this a feature only on PTHD version?
Thank You for this tutorial. It really helped me in my PT assignment.
Wish I‘d seen this before some pitfalls life brought me, hahaha. Thanks mate!

How do I completely delete a tempo marker? Thanx

Any quicker way to tempo map here? just wondering how to speed workflow, thanks!

isn't there a way to detect transients and map tempo to them like Logic?
Beat Detective? I was wondering about this during the video and I don't even use ProTools!

what happens during Mapping beats the tempo is too far or too close? is there a way around this? so your session is exact.
Great and easy idea !!! Thank you :)
Very good. Thanks!
im still having a problem matching instrument tracks and the click to tempo map

Hey when I tab to transient my bpm is at 10 ! and the song intro is 119 . please help !
can we get recorded sessions files that was not mixed
Thanks Mr. Mackey, mkay? mnayt?

Why must you be in slip mode? I never had a problem in grid mode default
Awesome thanks!
your voice s soothing af mein

thanks,,nice video

+Andrew Eadie Cool. Glad that was sorted. Cheers
You forgo to tell people to put the tracks into SAMPLE based mode, not ticks...
lol What are the subtitles talking about? 😂 "Commissioner you 1 have to get this happen happening right now" 😂
