The foot away mic placement captured Katie's vocals perfectly. After hearing her sing the same lyrics. I'm convinced the typical placement is ideal. Although, I am aware you may want to be really closer or really far away for a specific effect. Thank you for this video!
I literally just taught to myself, these tutorial lads should mention that headphones are vital, to account for begginers, about 5 seconds before he said it so subscription earned 😂👌
ahaha i used the stocking over the coat hanger for a while. I've also made a vocalist sing inside a blanket fort at one time. There are so many options to effecting the way any sound comes through a microphone. Love theses videos. I think I've been jumping through them for the past two hours.
Wow that is some clear quality recording! I just bought a Perception M microphone and I can't seem to get much input into it. I've turned the Input 1 level on my M-Box all the way up, but it just seems quite low still.
I have a Sennheiser MK4 and a pop filter which looks like yours. But I found that type of filter to be cumbersome and I put a foam wind filter on the mic and it works great...highly recommended...along with the TLM101/MK4.
Another good technique for avoiding plosives and sibilance is to position the microphone slightly off-axis. It still captures the details but without catching that blast of air. Admittedly I see this done more for voiceover than for singing...
Very informative, it helped me a lot. But I found that there was some noise of a fan or something in the background with a bit of music when the man was talking, which was distracting.
Hello, as a new Artist who uses the Pop Filter thought that even though Katie doesn't fit the mold of a "Singer" per say, neither did Adele.... Katie you have a beautiful Voice and when i get signed would love to have you do some back groung work with me Take care and keep the videos coming, from a new Fan, Mr. Luv
Ha that's great. Well the U87 has been used for years to record all types of things and there's a reason it's an industry standard. It sounds awesome just on it's own. Cheers. Jase
I'm guessing omni since Jason is moving all about the room and the sound is staying pretty consistent. Also, didn't notice a huge proximity boost when the singer got closer.
Yes, she's great. That's Katie Carr. I've done a lot of work with her over the last few years. I recorded her album last year, and this year she's been helping me with "Dead At The Desk" - an album I'm producing with a friend of mine. If you want to see more or her, check out my TH-cam Channel. Cheers. Jase
Hello, I'm currently attempting to learn about audio and I'm curious about mic placement, what I have learned so far is this type of microphone should be at 10 or 11 clocks pointed at the mouth, you can notice at 3.36 the pop from the word jumping. Pop filters are useless unless you're trying to impress people, the poping issue does not matter when the mic is far, but the reverb is more of a problem now, In no way am I a professional.
What a wonderful voice! But you don't want to place the pop filter that close to the mic, because that way it doesn't filter the plosives properly, there's still a relatively high amount of energy hitting the capsule of the mic.
It looks like a Neumann U67 or U87. I'm not sure of their visual differences, but it's likely one of those. The Yeti should do just fine for that purpose. Just play around with the position, as he's showing in this video, to see what works best for what you're trying to do.
Hi there, I have got mxl drk condenser mic. It sounds really nice for my vocals but the signal goes up and down even with me slightest of movements during recording making the volume go up and down. I am talking about really small insignificant natural movements. Even they are causing my recordings to be ruined in this way. I have a little desk stand on which I am attaching my mic. How to resolve that issue?
sounds like an issue with the mic. If it's working properly, they should allow for a natural pickup taking into account the usual head movements. Since yours does not appear to be doing this, there's a fault. The only other thing is that it's pickup pattern is very narrow (like a shotgun mic) and therefore any slight movement away from the pickup will result in loss of volume. Try a different mic to see if that makes a difference.
Too reduce echoes use pop filter and sing close to mic with as low gain as possible... or treat your room to echo less...tinny? I think thats dependent on mic quality
I guess you are probably trying to record with computer's microphone, or using the computer audio input, that is always going to be noisy. In the video, the mic is connected to a profesional audio interface, but if you buy a cheap usb condenser microphone like this one, you shouldn't hear any noise: www.amazon.com/Microphone-Fifine-Condenser-Recording-669B/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1521450797&sr=1-4&keywords=usb+microphone&dpID=41SKfZI6PHL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Nice question. For vocals I tend not to use either the -10dB or the low cut on the mic itself. However, when the signal gets to the preamp, i almost always use the low cut. I find it easier to switch the low cut in/out when I'm in the control room, so that I can hear the difference. That's obviously best achieved on the pre-amp.
The video is purely about the technique of mic placement. There's a clue in the title. It's not about making singers feel comfortable and at ease before they start.
+CRUMBCOUNTY Everyone wants the U87, but unless I get a boatload of money from somewhere, I've found many alternative microphones that work just as well. I wouldn';t just go buy it tho. AT and Shure are always decent quality as well as many others. What your recording will make a big difference as well.
"hi katie how you doing?"
"im fi-...."
"GOOD!"
gabriel meurer wilde
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ingenuine!!
We might never know how Katie was doing that day
I heard her say I'm good how are you. But he jumped in and just went on talking like he didnt really care for her reply. How rude.
Just getting her ready for working with producers.
For easy comparison of the vocal from different distance:
Far: 1:26
Medium: 2:30
Close: 3:29
Close with pop filter: 5:02
So apparently recording from distance makes the sound a half step higher xD
0:51 katie
"Hi Katie how're you doin?"
"Good th-"
"GOOD"
._.
The foot away mic placement captured Katie's vocals perfectly. After hearing her sing the same lyrics. I'm convinced the typical placement is ideal. Although, I am aware you may want to be really closer or really far away for a specific effect. Thank you for this video!
0:50 She just got completely blanked.
to be fair, he was just introducing her and she accidentally started to make small talk :) I'm sure he didn't mean to blank her
"Hi, how are you" is probably the most common rhetorical question you'll ever meet.
beck clewlow Yeah! Really bad!
I literally just taught to myself, these tutorial lads should mention that headphones are vital, to account for begginers, about 5 seconds before he said it so subscription earned 😂👌
Beautifully sung - and thanks for the info!
very nice tutorial
I don't know why I remember dr.Harrison wells from the flash series during his explanation
thanks for the tutorial :D
I thought the same thing lol, but at the same time you have to appreciate the quality and accuracy of this video in only 6:32!
hi Katie how you doin? im yeah whatever good. lol

Ha that's great. Thanks Ariel.
Nice to have a really pleasant singer in a demo for a change.
Wow that is some clear quality recording!

Thankyou for helping us out with your videos. What a splendid chap you are. Much apreciated
this is definitely an excellent tutorial!! it sums up in just 6 minutes techniques that can be really usefull when recording vocals!!! Great video!
I love Jason's Microlectures!
Hey, great tutorial! Thanks! When the singer has sudden loud parts. Would you ask the singer to move back a bit?
I have a Sennheiser MK4 and a pop filter which looks like yours. But I found that type of filter to be cumbersome and I put a foam wind filter on the mic and it works great...highly recommended...along with the TLM101/MK4.
She's a great singer!
Great information, Lovely voice Katie.

Thanks! Just about to track vocals next week for an EP project. =)
Lol half a foot away is apparently 3 feet away
***** 2:05 Id say thats 3 foot.
nah it looks to be about a foot
haha yeah i was just being a dick, its probably more like a foot and a half
At 2:05 she is indeed at 3 foot, like he said. At 2:34 she is supposedly at half a foot but I'd say it's 1.5 foot there.
Maybe this is the best tutorial so far.
Great, informative video. thank you for sharing.
Very informative, it helped me a lot. But I found that there was some noise of a fan or something in the background with a bit of music when the man was talking, which was distracting.
Can you record spoken words as voice over in stereo, or mono is the best way?
Thank you for the tutorial, helped a lot!

That pop filter killed the highs. I would have suggested metal mesh for best results. Still...thumbs up for making a really great video.
Useful video, thank you

Good video. Learned something new today. Thanks

Hi there. The mic I'm using in this video is a Neumann U87. cheers. Jase
What's the difference if you mess around with the height of the mic? Do you prefer it right in front of the mouth or mouth level?
you could have let us hear the difference in between distance to mic right after she sung!
What a beautiful voice. Anyone knows if she has any albums?
thanks for the video. was helpful
You can put the XLR cables into a mixing table or into an audio interface or into a preamp...
How long is half a foot in your country? I ask because she looked like she was a foot away.
Thanks, my microphone was too close while recording, how to fix the muffled sound please?
You should host some more videos mate⚡️⚡️
I'LL BE IN AUSTRALIA NEXT MONTH, I WOULD LOVE TO TOUR YOUR INSTITUTE DEPARTMENTS?
This is really great.
Great Tutorial! Thank you for sharing this :)
I like this, good video and really nice vocals.

Thanks alot bro❤️
This help me so much thank you 💞
hello! where do you connect your XLR cable?
don't you mean Bradley's on the microphone with rasMG?:)
ACTUALLY HELPED ALOT
Well it seems I've fixed the volume problem, but it still sounds low quality. Like echoy and tinny? Do I need to mess around with EQ or something?
Too reduce echoes use pop filter and sing close to mic with as low gain as possible... or treat your room to echo less...tinny? I think thats dependent on mic quality
What is the microphone used in this video?
How do you get such clean audio without all the noise???

+CRUMBCOUNTY Everyone wants the U87, but unless I get a boatload of money from somewhere, I've found many alternative microphones that work just as well. I wouldn';t just go buy it tho.
