In the US the cops would shrug and tell you it's not their problem. If there was a fight they might ask one of them to leave for the night but since husband has lived there for years. She can't just say get out and don't come back. Well she can but he doesn't have to listen. He has the legal right to stay. If he had refused the cops again wouldn't do anything unless violence is involved. They would tell her she will have to formally evict him before they will do anything.

Actually, I believe these stories originate in China where if both parties sign a divorce document it’s basically a done deal when submitted. The official document is received 6-8 weeks later. They can sue later on for what they call compensation if they were wronged through infidelity, theft, mistreatment etc.

The other family member w/ cancer lived in the same town. It made me think of where I grew up in NE PA along the Susquehanna river. The coal mines that had been dug by hand were depleted by the need for fuel- winters are darn cold there- not as cold as Alaska of course. After I left home, there was a big to-do over the lung CA & the protections that had been recommended but the companies didn’t institute them essentially because they were “too expensive”. It cost those companies a metric F-ton of $ for reparations!, FAR more than the $ to make the mines safer & some ~ loose change for PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) similar to what we use in healthcare, masks, gloves, overalls(instead of isolation gowns) that were resistant to the dust.
