Having responsibility for a child puts strength in her spine. They made the right decision concerning Grandmother and she voiced it perfectly on that last call. Too many people expect others to be too polite and "nice" to challenge their cruelty. Live and learn.
The mother-in-law may not have had any form of dementia, but she definitely needs to see a therapist. She was tampering with her daughter-in-law's food, that's not only the act of a very messed up person, it's also a criminal act in most places. My late mother-in-law had a type of dementia, and because of that, was mean to me on a few occasions. And while she wasn't the best cook, but she never tried to poison me. This was a good story.
OP is an excellent example of what happens when you are kind and assume the best intentions. She was believed and everyone sided with her without her having to say a word. She seems like a wonderful person. I will add, you can be savvy as well as kind though. If she had entertained just a hint of suspicion, she could have innocently switched dishes with the husband long before the brownie incident.

That's the thing with someone that is truly trusting and maybe a bit naive. Once you betray them and they come to terms with it, they will never again see you as a person that won't try to hurt them. They might forgive but they won't forget.

OP sounds like me. I give the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Betray me, and my memory is long. I will forgive you, but that isn't for you. Forgiveness is for my health and wellness.
Life is to short not to have a grandchild in their life but if this was a true story i can understand why shes not allowed in the child's life.
At least Diane didn't seem to know about rue. A spice that in big enough quantities is an abortive, and rather poisonous.
MIL malicious and DIL was too nice and gullible.
I don't know what language is the narrator's mother tongue / birth language, but she is to be commended for her hard work to try to be correct with her english. Keep practicing, your doing great. I would sound terrible if I tried to speak your language.

Op is trippin. I don't eat food that I don't like regardless of who served it to me. I would've told her the first time. This MIL would have been told off quickly.
Not in Asian culture. The daughter-in-law is normally too polite to refuse to eat what the mother-in-law personally cooked. Moreover, she is young and just newly married.

I hate hearing that stupid logic. Oh you married into the family but you're an outsider so I hate you. But love the children you give me. By their own logic that makes the kid at the minimum HALF outsider. So why do you want to love a child that is only half your son's? Would they still feel that way if the child started to be more of a spitting image of mom?
For the Asian culture, the child is not half outsider. The child is the bloodline of the son, whereas the daughter-in-law did not have the blood of their family. The son will have the surname of the father, but the daughter-in-law had the surname of a different family, so she is considered an outsider.
I would be concerned that she was doing more to the food than just letting it go bad...
And quit insulting the narrator. If you don't know and understand at least 2 languages you need to be quiet.

I would encourage you to forgive Diane. But never forget. And you can forgive her without her being in your life. Jesus died on the cross for us. We abused Jesus to death and yet He forgave us. Please forgive Diane. It will make you feel better. But you don't have to be friends with her and she doesn't have to be around your child.

If I was a character in that story I would have held that B1TCH down and forced her to eat her own rotten food that she had tried to feed my wife.

Ask your husband to taste your soup serving in comparison to his serving at your in-laws . Please keep in mind that your mother-in-law is probably preparing your plates separately from the other plates and is showing her malicious nature!

Lots of harden hearts here! One can forgive but that doesn’t mean one needs to fully or even partially trust the person. Mary presented herself up as someone who holds grudges. She says she cares about her health but she lacks knowledge in what holding grudges can do to her physical and mental health. That’s a nasty rabbit hole she digging herself. And her family
Yeah, you are dead wrong. Forgiveness isn't a get out of jail free card - what happens if Grandma Diane takes a dislike to her one of her grandkids and plays favorites? Going no contact is the only way for OP to keep her peace of mind and keep her family drama-free. I'll tell you from experience that the drama that somebody like that creates in a family is far, far worse for a person's state of mind and health than any damage you think holding a grudge and going no contact can cause. It's also worth noting that God expects people to repent/change before he fully accepts them so it's not like he doesn't have basic ground rules for a relationship as well.

Mary was basically being poisoned since the day that she met Diane - for at least that first year of marriage.
So, even Diane's stupid excuse of Mary being simple could not have been any real reason. She didn't even know Mary before hating her. Diane simply didn't want to "Loose" her son to any woman.
"So salty that the salt didn't even dissolve." Not just extra salty and extra sweet but, also stale foods, and rotting food. What would have happened to the baby if she would have kept eating the bad food? Diane could have accidentally killed the baby.
Diane took a pregnancy and a year, so up to 20 months, to even offer some words of apology. Just words. Words that don't ring true to me, not when she immediately starts to argue with Mary about how bad the food tampering really was. That's not an apology, that's minimizing her behavior. Diane needs to prove herself sorry to Mary. The men need to be able to believe Diane is sorry. Then Mary doesn't have to trust Diane, just trust the men. Mary truly has no obligation to trust Diane.

Let them be poisoned and see how forgiving they are to someone who won't admit their true intentions and guilt. Exactly what I was thinking.....I'd NEVER trust that person again. Screw that, she doesn't deserve forgiveness. She was just poisoning Mary at first but then she got pregnant, so Diane was already harming the baby before it was even born. Also consuming too much salt is really bad for you. There's a famous Munchausen by proxy case where the mother ended up killing her son by poisoning him with salt, now this is obviously not on that level (she was giving it thru his feeding tube) but blood pressure and water retention are already big concerns in pregnancy.
Diane didn't know Mary's medical history so she could've been seriously harming her. Food poisoning can kill people. She could've lost the baby. And when you're pregnant everything you consume, your baby is also consuming, whether it be food, medications, vitamins, environmental toxins or worse drugs and smoking. And we don't know that Diane would've stopped tampering with her food even after she found out she was pregnant. She may well have wanted Mary to lose the baby since she despised Mary so much for no reason in the first place.
She should have called the police and had Diane arrested. Tampering with food to intentionally add too much of something, and/or intentionally serving moldy and expired food is a crime. It's intentional food poisoning.
It's unforgivable and she should never ever trust Diane. Mary & Jake did the right thing cutting all ties with Diane. I just wish Tom would've divorced such an evil person.

@@Ziggy024 I understand how you might hold that view. In my faith (Catholic), it is one of the biggest requirements. In the great prayer (The Our Father) that Jesus left us, Jesus said "..And forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us..." The moral to His teaching is that if we want forgiveness from God, then we should also forgive. It may be the hardest thing one ever does, though Heaven is the prize for those who truly follow the Lord.

I'm, somewhat conflicted with the outcome.
Forgiveness, might be difficult for people at times? However, holding on to Negative feelings, and thoughts, is not healthy. Both, physically and spiritually.
I don't believe the MIL in the Story, should have unsupervised visits with the baby. At least, not until she demonstrated that she can be Trusted.
Holding onto ill feelings, or hate, will destroy a person. While doing that to oneself, it has zero physical effect on anyone else.
It's Like drinking Poison, expecting the Poison to affect the other person.
It only affects you.

I forgave my ex hubby after his first and second rounds of adultry. The third resulted in a pregnancy. I could not forget or forgive. Divorcing him was the best thing I ever did for myself.

I wonder why Tom did not DIVORCE her? I cannot imagine that it could be a very loving and joyous and happy marriage AFTER his own son and his son's wife permanently cut ties with his wife AND even if he is allowed his own wife can never see their grand children. Some of the words are not pronounced correctly. She does a good job otherwise. Perhaps if she would ask Google how to pronounce the word she would do better next time. These silly stories are somewhat funny to listen to.

@@Kelle0284 It was hard to listen to. The narrator accent sounds Asian and it made me think the mother-in-law was racist for the way he was treating her daughter in law. She admitted to not liking here from the moment she met her. Thats probably not the case, but with her Asian accent it could lead you to believe it might be.
When narrating english, find someone who can pronounce and narrate correctly. I understand it was the lady's 2nd or 3rd language,but it's very distracting
