I grew 2 passion fruit trees, now about 2 years old & used pig wire about 6 inches square mesh, vertical & horizontal over bamboo & the fruit went wild, I had so much & what went over the fence my neighbours enjoyed... Great crop but I needed to prune but didn't know how to until I watched your video .... Thx so much Charles. I didn't realize how much you have to cut back & how hardly they are. I'm in Australia & its 1st Sept 2021 so now I have my work cut out for me over the weekend ... excuse the pun Lol (^_^)

Hello Philip! I cannot believe that your growing season is beginning, as our ends. It would be a dream to be able to live in both hemispheres so that the growing season would never end--- however, gardening in Southern California is close to the dream, for now! :-) Passion fruit is truly a remarkable plant and definitely a top 3 fruit to grow because (1) its easy to grow, (2) delicious, and (3) grows soooo fast!!! I'm glad to help be a part of your growing successes!
      Cheers,
      Charles 😀👍

    Charles,
I have not grown the fruiting variety yet, just the ornamental here in Livermore. But it would freeze back every year to the mulch layer and regrow with vengeance. I have started 5 cuttings of the fruiting variety and will be planting them in a slightly protected area. So hope it goes well. The struggle is finding a spot that is protected in winter from frost, but open to the summer sun.

Hi Charles, thanks for this super informative video. I'm in zone 10b and it seems we fruit twice a year, i may be mistaken. Anyhow, i'm having a hard time figuring out when to prune. Right now we are moving into winter, which is very mild and my vines have tons of fruit and still flowering. The first day of spring will be September 21st. When should I prune these vines as they've gone too far away to get the fruit, I'd like to bring them back over my pergolas. Thanks so much!

  • @tanchinaik48

A better way to cut passion fruits is to cut off the top 20 percent and avoid cutting pods so the juice do not ooze out during cutting. If you cut into halves 50:50, the juice will be wasted.

Very educational video on pruning the passionfruit vine thank you. You are also super sweet to care for the hummingbird family by forgoing the pruning. I have two questions for you if you can help me. You mentioned that it can be pruned back to as much as 90% as it fruits on new growth, but wouldn't that mean really low number of passionfruits will be produced by such a huge % of pruning? Also, since a vine can last for average 3 years, is it ok to plant a new vine at the same spot where the previous one died or is removed? Thank you.

It's also frustrating that of all places(Tennessee), you'd think they'd sell common milkweed plants and seeds but they don't anywhere here only tropical.

      Hello MrHaenn,
Ideally, you would have had the fig pruned in that window of time between the passing of the last chance of frost, and before the fig tips bud with new growth. However, if that was my fig, I would prune now (though a bit late) so that you can shape and manage the tree's growth over the course of this growing season. Keep me posted on your decision & results! Charles :-)
