The question is who was Ravana and they want to know about his character. It is not that Ravana was a bad person. When it was Ravana’s time, there were three types of sanskriti (cultures or civilization.) Like now there are different types of religions, the same was also at Ravana’s time. One of them was yaksha sanskriti. In yaksha sanskriti there were people like kuber who were yaksha who would spend their lives in indulgence and luxury. One was Raksh sanskriti. In Raksh sanskriti, we would have rakshas. They would live in jungles in tribes or they would live near the ocean or they would be pirates. The third one was deva sanskriti. Deva sanskriti would have devas like Indra. Then there was Arya sanskriti. Arya sanskriti had human beings. Arya sanskriti and deva sanskriti would believe in vedas.
