I hit my 2st RED BUD in 1979 when I was in 9 grade. Then didn’t go to a mother one till this race. My brother & I hit every race for the next 19 years! For most of those I lived at the trailer park across the street from the track. Would have to get up for work with a hangover large enough to k.o. Tyson and my skin sluffing off of me in big sheets!! Oh what fun!!👍🏻
I can't believe you got kicked out for sparklers. Must have been some stupid rent-a-cops. One of the last years I went there, sunny and hot, over 90 degrees, and they had a new rule no tents and stuff on the hill that could block other fans view. I bought a FMF umbrella from the FMF trailer, and used it to block the sun off of me. Two rent-a-cops told me I could not use it, so I went back to the trailer and asked for my money back. The FMF folks got a hold of one of the track management, had the rule changed right them and there, so I kept the umbrella, (still have it), and used it all day. Later, in the heat of the day, I was walking down the main hill in the infield, and there I saw him, a old man over 80 years old, sitting in his lawn chair enjoying the race on the side of the hill, bothering nobody, and he has a FMF umbrella blocking the sun for him. It made me feel great that FMF and I made a difference for that old gentleman.
Yeah, I bet he's 4th gear pinned railing the berm hitting the take off jump in mid to full throttle in 5th to clear the top of that landing. It looks pretty forgiving when he cased it the last time around when he was coming up on Emig.
@@bh8671 Barcia is a 7th place rider with occasional podium finishes on the last of first race of the season. He normally rides rough and hard because the top guys are half a percent better than him. When and if he gets take out I have no sympathy for him.
There was a little bit more run up to the Leap back then. But still you'd have to hit the turn flawlessly and grab a handful. Definitely takes some big ol balls to hit that monster on a 125.

I was also there in the spring for tune up day that year, & Gene Ritchie announced over the P.A. That if we looked that way we’d get to see a “really thrilling thing”. It was Mike & Tim Ritchie blasting off of that thing. They had been working on it all day and it was winding down towards evening by then. From the armature pits / parking lot during the 4th of July every year, it looked like he was 200 feet high!! LoL. Mike was on a 250 & Tim was bolting off it on a Banshee 4 wheeler!! WoW 🤩 that little clip sure brought back some great memories 🤗
Great story. Michigan guy here to, and I had a crush on Angie Ritchie. :) The other great jump they put in that is no longer there, the "double double". it was tricky for those guys for a few years. I remember Bradshaw landing right on the face of it, bouncing over the lip, and rip away. I think he was just testing it to see how it felt. I was standing maybe 20 feet off the track from that landing jump. I never felt a 125 shake the ground before. If they didn't do that first double perfectly, they would not even try the second one. We don't have obstacles that separate the talent like that anymore. The 4-strokes are too fast now, and bigger jumps are not the answer.
tyler t that's also on smooth pavement. A stock 125 makes about 36 to 37 1/2 horsepower. He was on a factory bike at the time so I'd go as much as about 42 to 43 horse. The Leap wasn't quite as long as it is these days but it still had major poppyness to it. You see how much higher in the air Larocco is than guys who didn't jump it. Major props to Larocco for being an insane mother and hitting the Leap.
Larroco first one to clear the leap on a 125 is so awesome. Kids clearing it on 250 fs which are more powerful and better suspension. People are like wow he did it. Phew as he should be able too.
I think you are talking about 92is, when Bradshaw and Stanton were banging up front, and Damon endowed lading a single jump. I think Bradshaw won this race on his 125, (#8). Emig dominated this track just a bit later for several years. I was there in 85 and for the next 21 years, so I might have something mixed up.
JR_113- I raced a 250A pro-am there the fall classic on a cr500. Got 19th out of 40 and only one guy other than me was doing the triple in the valley. That was 1999.
When they first built it he came from up by the night track that is over a 100 yards away and hit it as fast as he could. My dad is good friends with the announcer for red bud Larry whitmer who has been racing there since the 70s.
They put more powerful motors in the bikes, so the tracks got faster too. 2021 just ended, 2:08 fast lap time. The track time per lap used to be over 3 min, and the track layout has not changed all that much.

Watching the turn is important but it those cahunes to hold it on just a little longer and further up the face of the jump to make it or break it,and may even grab another gear ,but the last ten feet of the jump are so important,one thing nice out this jump is it is a step up style where u are landing two floors up from where u took off helps a little in not killing your bike when u land,takes half of landing g s out of it,its still a big jump the old 250cc two strokes really made this jump look sick,the extra height was so awsum to watch.piece mike is a great rider I was really impressed with his supercross persistents and his SX riding.
Sounds like you jumped it. I have seen it though, pinned to the lip, last 10 feet crucial. Today, everybody has the tracks wired are within a couple seconds, (lap times) to like 15th place sometimes. The 4-stroke engine may hook up to the ground better, but everything else about it was bad for the sport IMO. It was not a free market idea. It was forced on the industry by environmental groups with power they should not have. There were 2 major interventions in the MX free market that hurt the sport to what it is today: the 1986 production rule, (for the USA only, bet your but the FIM was behind that), that tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years,-- and the 4-stroke forced on the industry, (bikes doubled in price again). Ironic though? Yamaha was the spearhead for both of those movements,---and they are left making the 2-stroke. Doug in Michigan
I saw Kelly Smith case that jump during the 4-stroke nationals on a huge KTM 4-stroke. He did not crash or break any bones, but he broke his motor mounts and the engine shifted ion the frame pulling the carb boot off the carburetor, so he DNFed the race. I was friends with his dad at the time and talking with him mear the jump. While we were talking, before Kelly cases it, his dad said, "He missed a gear.". I was pretty impressed that he was so in tune with Kelly's racing, he knew he missed a shift while I was talking with him. I sure didn't hear it.
So my Indiana boy did it waay back in the day on a 125. Why did everyone think it was such a huge feat when james bubba stewart did it years later?!?! Things that make you go, hmmm. Lol

Yeah you have to have a 4 stroke if you want to win today but 2 strokes are the most fun and so easy to maintain. I started riding in the 80's and 2 strokes were where it was at. The Honda XR's were the only 4 stroke I would even consider back then. 4 stroke need too much maintenance.
@@tommywallbanger here we go with this bs. the factory will not allow their racers to run smokers. barcia tried this many times and Honda promptly said no despite barcia wanting to run smokers. many other pros have tried this route as well and all have been told nope. if you think smokers arent competitve you need to go check hard enduro and the worlds toughest races where smokers easily beat the 4 strokes despite being the "inferior" bike.. put jefferey herlings on a smoker and watch him clean house as usual. it has nothing to do with the bikes, factories outside of ktm dont make money on smokers, just the 4 bombs and thats why you dont see smokers. remember honda has bought out the ama and the rule book to keep smokers from racing competitively.

I mostly ride mx style out in sand pits in NJ. I thought that everybody was on 4 strokes because they were faster and that the 2 strokes as much as people like them, just weren't getting on the podium. I know 2 strokes (300 cc) rule enduro and woods. I have only owned mx bikes. Right now I have a 2015 KTM 150 SX and I just got finished putting a 2004 KTM 200 SX engine in it. Thanks for the info. What bike or bikes do you own or ride right now?
It must be said that a factory works 125 is leaps and bounds better than a stock 125. Lighter, with better suspension, more horses, better throttle response, wet sump oil system, etc. Some factory teams even bored out the blocks and were running 167cc bikes
I now port 2-stroke engines for a living, and when Kawasaki came out with the semi truck first for the team, Mike was on a 250 2-stroke, and his dad was still his mechanic. A factory Kawi guy said we could come back in an hour, (during signature time then), and he would show me and my buddy the inside of the semi trailer. We came back, and he took us in,---went up front and left us alone in the trailer. There it was, a ported 250cc cylinder sitting on the bench. I picked it up and took a look inside. I was shocked that there was very little work done to it, possibly just some blueprinting to get it to factory spec, and maybe a touch more, but that was it. Then Mikes dad came into the trailer from the front, saw me with the cylinder in my hands,---and kicked our butts out. :)
Kawasaki has a great long record of building strong 2-stroke motors. I don't think I remember any of them since late 70's that were a dog off the floor. I only had 2, a 1976 KD125 when I was 12, (a enduro bike with no lights with knobby tires and a number plate up front.), and it was faster than the Yamaha DT and Suzuki TS enduro bikes,---and my 97 KX250 was a mid range monster. There may have been a bad one in the 70's, but I don't ever remember reading about a bad motor from Kawasaki in MXA. Handling was a different issue. :)
I did it on 125 as well...got disqualified had to race B class then for Loretta's qualifier.....I wasnt that fast but could jump anything......this was 98 or 99' cant remember, cased to many jumps... lmfao
Yup, I've seen it back when I was in the c class. I would catch or pass this one guy, monster double, then have to run him down again only to him doubling away , repeat.. Jeff Ward did this jump in 88 on his kx500 during practice, it was impressive.
Yep. Round here in the 90s a few tracks had 120 to 150'ers and nomatter if you were c,or d class if you cleared the big ones you automatically went to b class
Not so hard packed today, this year the soil was like so many other pro (monster energy) tracks sawdust soft, seems to be a trend maybe less injuries? La Rocco a true iron-man rider so if he helped build it he was gonna jump it. Not many other jumps in the world are as intimidating as this jump is. If the face of this jump wasn't bad enough, you have to come off a corner and you can't see your landing until about halfway into the jump. I have always though it was cool that it is called a "Leap" instead of La Rocco's Jump, it is just classier, more intelligent, like a leap in time or an idea leaped into you mind, just me though.
No, I think the FIM has the influence of how the land owners build the tracks now. I would even bet if the track did not want to make his track the same as the rest all across the country, (that has to mean force, we would never do that otherwise), they would lose their race date. I wonder if that is what happened to Muddy Creek? Further evidence of hurting our talent is the redundancy of the SX tracks, nothing but rhythm sections (designed to keep everybody the same speed), and whoops. The FIM has done more damage to this sport in the world, and the USA, than any other entity of the industry. They are dysfunctional socialists, or worse. 5 point red star in the word "Motocross" on the podium banner. That is not pro American man.

Today, the top 10 or so guys have the track wired, and real close lap times. I think it sucks if you can't find an advantage. I hate seeing everybody go the same speed, because I know if the tracks separated the talent better, we would see that no 2 of these human beings are the same. It really kills "greatness", these tracks today, and that is why we don't win the MXofN anymore. The FIM did that to us. The European tracks are more knarly for that reason. The FIM has hated American dominance since 1981. Every year at the MXofN, they would pull a dirty trick to try to beat us when we did that 13 year streak. In fact, one year they changed how the scoring went, and we still won. But if they had left it alone, we would have lost. :) Believe me, they hate us, and they ruined our racing talent.

On "The Whiskey Throttle Show" with the LaRocco interview a while back, I think he said he built the huge jump at his home track first, then they built one at Red Bud.
RC did it. Pastrana did it. Maybe more, not sure. Only a hand full though. Not all of the 250 riders were doing it form many years too. This was when the tracks separated the talent. With the more powerful 4-strokes, the tracks got faster, and they have the tracks wired. I know the answer is not faster tracks and bigger jumps. The engines got too fast IMO.
Have you ever watched/listened to a great MX show called "The Whiskey Throttle Show"? They are like 3 hour interviews/conversations with many of the great stars of the past. Bradshaw was the last one. It was a great interview, and I think you will see him in a better light for sure. They get so much more out of these guys than the ,magazines ever did.
Its 2023, you just unloaded your brand new, fuel injected CRF450R. You have your fresh gear on, looking good, running VP 110 octane race fuel smelling like bubble gum. You’re railing corners, gettin’ sideways. All the sudden, some old guy blows past you on the outside G out, riding a clapped out 1992 cr125, looking goofy as hell. He launches to outer space on laroccos leap, WFO. You case the double. Come Monday, you brag to your coworkers how fast you are. The end.

Back in the 70’s we would have stood at the edge of that jump and visualized landing it. And then pedaled home for bologna and mustard sandwiches.
Not that jump. That jump did not exist in the 70's. I think this year is 88 or 89, and that leap was put in just a short time before that.
That would be a long ass pedal home....redbud is out a ways from town. And not on Redbud trail...that's a fast road with no shoulder.

The trick I hear is throwing your hips forward a bit as you leave the lip of that jump. Get that momentum going. :)

When Larocco did this for the first time on the 125, was it already being done by the 250's??

2 strokes were much more exciting to watch even though 4 strokes are far superior
Yeah you have to have a 4 stroke if you want to win today but 2 strokes are the most fun and so easy to maintain. I started riding in the 80's and 2 strokes were where it was at. The Honda XR's were the only 4 stroke I would even consider back then. 4 stroke need too much maintenance.

@@tommywallbanger here we go with this bs. the factory will not allow their racers to run smokers. barcia tried this many times and Honda promptly said no despite barcia wanting to run smokers. many other pros have tried this route as well and all have been told nope. if you think smokers arent competitve you need to go check hard enduro and the worlds toughest races where smokers easily beat the 4 strokes despite being the "inferior" bike.. put jefferey herlings on a smoker and watch him clean house as usual. it has nothing to do with the bikes, factories outside of ktm dont make money on smokers, just the 4 bombs and thats why you dont see smokers. remember honda has bought out the ama and the rule book to keep smokers from racing competitively.
@@mulisha0351 Did not know that. I trust you. Sounds like you know what you're talking about. I'm a 2 stroke guy myself. I have ridden since 1983 but I don't race, just a free rider. I mostly ride mx style out in sand pits in NJ. I thought that everybody was on 4 strokes because they were faster and that the 2 strokes as much as people like them, just weren't getting on the podium. I know 2 strokes (300 cc) rule enduro and woods. I have only owned mx bikes. Right now I have a 2015 KTM 150 SX and I just got finished putting a 2004 KTM 200 SX engine in it. Thanks for the info. What bike or bikes do you own or ride right now?

It must be said that a factory works 125 is leaps and bounds better than a stock 125. Lighter, with better suspension, more horses, better throttle response, wet sump oil system, etc. Some factory teams even bored out the blocks and were running 167cc bikes
I now port 2-stroke engines for a living, and when Kawasaki came out with the semi truck first for the team, Mike was on a 250 2-stroke, and his dad was still his mechanic. A factory Kawi guy said we could come back in an hour, (during signature time then), and he would show me and my buddy the inside of the semi trailer. We came back, and he took us in,---went up front and left us alone in the trailer. There it was, a ported 250cc cylinder sitting on the bench. I picked it up and took a look inside. I was shocked that there was very little work done to it, possibly just some blueprinting to get it to factory spec, and maybe a touch more, but that was it. Then Mikes dad came into the trailer from the front, saw me with the cylinder in my hands,---and kicked our butts out. :)

Kawasaki has a great long record of building strong 2-stroke motors. I don't think I remember any of them since late 70's that were a dog off the floor. I only had 2, a 1976 KD125 when I was 12, (a enduro bike with no lights with knobby tires and a number plate up front.), and it was faster than the Yamaha DT and Suzuki TS enduro bikes,---and my 97 KX250 was a mid range monster. There may have been a bad one in the 70's, but I don't ever remember reading about a bad motor from Kawasaki in MXA. Handling was a different issue. :)
I did it on 125 as well...got disqualified had to race B class then for Loretta's qualifier.....I wasnt that fast but could jump anything......this was 98 or 99' cant remember, cased to many jumps... lmfao

Yep. Round here in the 90s a few tracks had 120 to 150'ers and nomatter if you were c,or d class if you cleared the big ones you automatically went to b class
Not so hard packed today, this year the soil was like so many other pro (monster energy) tracks sawdust soft, seems to be a trend maybe less injuries? La Rocco a true iron-man rider so if he helped build it he was gonna jump it. Not many other jumps in the world are as intimidating as this jump is. If the face of this jump wasn't bad enough, you have to come off a corner and you can't see your landing until about halfway into the jump. I have always though it was cool that it is called a "Leap" instead of La Rocco's Jump, it is just classier, more intelligent, like a leap in time or an idea leaped into you mind, just me though.
No, I think the FIM has the influence of how the land owners build the tracks now. I would even bet if the track did not want to make his track the same as the rest all across the country, (that has to mean force, we would never do that otherwise), they would lose their race date. I wonder if that is what happened to Muddy Creek? Further evidence of hurting our talent is the redundancy of the SX tracks, nothing but rhythm sections (designed to keep everybody the same speed), and whoops.
The FIM has done more damage to this sport in the world, and the USA, than any other entity of the industry. They are dysfunctional socialists, or worse. 5 point red star in the word "Motocross" on the podium banner. That is not pro American man.

Today, the top 10 or so guys have the track wired, and real close lap times. I think it sucks if you can't find an advantage. I hate seeing everybody go the same speed, because I know if the tracks separated the talent better, we would see that no 2 of these human beings are the same. It really kills "greatness", these tracks today, and that is why we don't win the MXofN anymore. The FIM did that to us. The European tracks are more knarly for that reason. The FIM has hated American dominance since 1981. Every year at the MXofN, they would pull a dirty trick to try to beat us when we did that 13 year streak. In fact, one year they changed how the scoring went, and we still won. But if they had left it alone, we would have lost. :) Believe me, they hate us, and they ruined our racing talent.

On "The Whiskey Throttle Show" with the LaRocco interview a while back, I think he said he built the huge jump at his home track first, then they built one at Red Bud.
Only Larroco and gues who, JS, clean the leap o an 125 IN RACE
RC did it. Pastrana did it. Maybe more, not sure. Only a hand full though. Not all of the 250 riders were doing it form many years too. This was when the tracks separated the talent. With the more powerful 4-strokes, the tracks got faster, and they have the tracks wired. I know the answer is not faster tracks and bigger jumps. The engines got too fast IMO.

Have you ever watched/listened to a great MX show called "The Whiskey Throttle Show"? They are like 3 hour interviews/conversations with many of the great stars of the past. Bradshaw was the last one. It was a great interview, and I think you will see him in a better light for sure. They get so much more out of these guys than the ,magazines ever did.
