  • Paul St John-Smith trained at Oxford in the 1970s qualifying in 1979. He trained as a General Practitioner 1980-1982. He then joined Hoffman La Roche as a research Physician in psychopharmacology in 1982 and investigated a range of psychotropic agents including various types of antidepressants, hypnotics, anaesthetic agents and the benzodiazepine antagonist. In 1987 he returned to study Psychiatry full time. He has worked in a number of London Hospitals including Barnet, Guys, Greenwich, St Thomas’, Watford, St Albans and Harperbury.
    He recently retired as a Community Adult psychiatrist. He is interested in the Philosophy of science; Evidence based medicine and particularly Evolutionary psychiatry , utilising the Neo-Darwinian theories of Evolution as a way of understanding Psychiatric disorders. He has contributed to a number of peer reviewed papers, chapters and a current book on Evolutionary Psychiatry, as well as papers on Substance misuse, Dual diagnosis, Psychopharmacology, Professionalism, Suicide and Depression. He has taught in Hertfordshire Cambridge and London Universities as well as presenting to a number of training schemes and acting as an Examiner for the Royal College of Psychiatry.
    He is current chair of EPSIG and a founding member of the group.

    Anecdotally, Australia has had and possibly still does have a strong culture of signaling, especially in the working class. But also from Persian contractual negotiations to now, alcohol is used in the consolidation of business deals, so those males with higher social status, the women select for, not directly selecting for alcohol consumption. One who can't hold their liquor, is ridiculed or makes an arse of themselves, that they lose status, thus access to women. Another element overlooked, is that drug addiction can happen after procreation, and modeling repetition can ensue.
