What a MASTER! R.I.P. Chick. We’re not always in the mood for 70’s fusion, but when we are, Romantic Warrior and Birds of Fire top the list hands down, call a cab, no questions asked, no argument, get outta town.
The most popular and successful lineup of Return to Forever -- Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, and Al Di Meola -- was coming off the Grammy-winning No Mystery when it recorded its third and final album, Romantic Warrior. It has been suggested that in employing a medieval album cover (drawn by Wilson McLean), using titles like "Medieval Overture" and "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant," and occasionally playing in a baroque style, particularly in Clarke's "The Magician," Corea was responding to Rick Wakeman's successful string of albums on similar themes. Certainly, the music suggests that the musicians have been listening to Wakeman's band, Yes, among other progressive rock groups. But they bring more of a traditional jazz approach to their sound, particularly in the opening statement of intent "Medieval Overture" and the original side one closer, "The Romantic Warrior," both of which feature extensive acoustic piano soloing by Corea. The original side two -- Di Meola's "Majestic Dance," "The Magician," and "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant" -- is much more in a jazz-rock style, with Di Meola particularly rocking out on extensive, fast-paced electric guitar solos. Meanwhile, the rhythm section of Clarke and White is always extremely busy, maintaining a funky, driving pulse and several cross rhythms no matter what's going on above it. This is particularly noticeable, naturally, on White's sole composition, "Sorceress," but it continues to keep the music in the fusion camp even when Corea is sounding like a more traditional jazz pianist. Romantic Warrior is the sound of a mature band at the top of its game, which may help explain why it was Return to Forever's most popular album, eventually certified as a gold record, and the last by this assemblage. Having expressed themselves this well, they decided it was time for them to move on.
@@skineyemin4276 But Lenny White DOES play on the 'Romantic Warrior' album. He plays drums, timpani, congas, timbales, snare drums, suspended cymbals, alarm clock and handbells.
I saw the promotion tour concert for this album at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion way back in the day. Few can fill Stanley's shoes. Vic is definitely worthy. Return to forever in power Chick.
I can remember getting this album when it came out. It's amazing yet bittersweet viewing Chick Corea playing some of the seminal music from my time. RIP, Chick..
Once in a while the entity called "John McLaughlin 1974" astral projects himself into our present moment to remind us of our potential... and the need to practice more often.
All great musicians but when John starts to solo and connects with Victor and Lenny the magic starts -a wonderful upload -thank you-RIP the fabulous Chick Corea
Ooooh man, why didn’t we get proper recordings of this band?? Love everything about it, literally everything. Vic Friggin’ Wooten _bowing_ his fretless bass. Mahavishnu faithful to the composition while making it very much his own. But probably my favorite thing is the genuine smile on his face, watching Vic play that fantastic solo. I’m torn because i wish this person had been in the moment at the performance rather than filming. But at the same time... man, i’m glad i got see and hear it!
*RIP* *_Romantic Warrior_* *WoW!* I went to hear Chick lecture on composition. One person asked "What do you do when you get writers block?" Chick humbly replied, "I know what you're talking about but, that doesn't happend to me."
In an online memorial, Eric Marienthal told the story of wanting to punch in on a take because he played a wrong note. Chick replied, "If it was wrong, why did you play it?"
What an extraordinary treat. Loved them both for a long time, particularly J Mcl. McL accepts the ensemble constraints and then really soars. The solo here is one of his and one of Guitar's best. May the Baby Jesus and Mother of Muhammad and Yaweh too bless the musicians and the original poster. And what fantastic bass, with that bowing!
I enjoyed very much this version of this Chick's composition... Also I enjoyed watching the face of the most tasteless woman in the entire, probably, NYC!!! :-)
Wow! The Masters. I love that Chick has to read his stuff. He's written a HUGE collection of great music...no way he could have all of that memorized. Fantastic band! Absolute Genii!
green fox depends on the song and what the composer wants. Chick mostly has very strict and pretty complicated compositions, like Pat Metheny for instance. During the solo's things are free and can go anywhere.
I love this performance. Chick is such distinctive and accomplished player and composer. Also, I think that's the first time I've seen/heard an electric bass guitar bowed. Sounded like an acoustic too. Nice woody tone. Vicor could have been a flamenco guitarist as well. Jesus. John's playing is lyrical and blazing with, interestingly, more of a descending scale approach, as counterpoint to Chick. Cool stuff.
Every few Generations comes a Soul who's Perceptions & Achievements are like Mutations in Evolution! One could rattle off a few names that have come before Armando Anthony "Chick Corea" Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Tatum, Peterson, But you would be hard pressed to name one since him, Chick you were Brilliant & will be Sorely Missed
Ellos son virtuosos son únicos en este estilo de music, siempre escuche Return Forever, guitarrista original Al Di Meola, aquí Mclaughlin demostrando el porque, es considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas del mundo.
That broad in he foreground, you kno, the one with the "I don't have a fucking clue that I just witnessed perhaps one of the finest Bass solos ever performed" look on her face. And it was totally improvised!
Victor Wooten plays way, way, way around the chord during his solo. When the chorus comes back around John M looks over towards Chick as if to say... "We're home now... who's turn is next?"

R. I.P. Chick corea 😔😪
Great super duo forever
Chick's first section and accompaniment for Wooten and McLaughlin was great. Wow.
Holy Spirit of Awesomeness. You can't get 4 better musicians on one stage than Lenny, Victor, John and Chick. What a band this is.
RIP Chick...I started listening to you when i was 12 now i’m 52...Thanks
me at 15 and now Im 45
16 and now 33
just a dang 👍
cat ready for improv
I was about 18, now at 66 and still lovin' fusion.
Moi j'ai 46677 et je suis toujours fan
Rest in power Chick Corea. Beautiful man. Godspeed

Still an amazing tune no matter who chick plays with it. 'Romantic Warrior' is my go to album when I am in the mood for 70's fusion.
Yeah, well.., not if there is no Lenny White playing.
@@skineyemin4276 But Lenny White DOES play on the 'Romantic Warrior' album. He plays drums, timpani, congas, timbales, snare drums, suspended cymbals, alarm clock and handbells.
RIP Chick. Thanks for all the great tunes.
Wow, so cool to see Victor Wooten playing with these guys. 3 of my favorite musicians.
i love how happy john looks watching vic solo. 2 masters admiring each others' craft
Thanks to whoever recorded this!

RIP, Chick..
how incredibly beautiful those instruments are
Once in a while the entity called "John McLaughlin 1974" astral projects himself into our present moment to remind us of our potential... and the need to practice more often.
Just enjoy.
yes indeed, and more than practise it inheres, it says, "can you be so funky"?
All great musicians but when John starts to solo and connects with Victor and Lenny the magic starts -a wonderful upload -thank you-RIP the fabulous Chick Corea
Chick and John have a fistbump at the end, two masters who have seen it all in music. Two survivors.
When four world-class musicians listen to each other. Something beautiful happens.
Empathy
Up close and personal on some of the greatest musicians of our time. Don't get much better. Thank you ❤️

This is pure delight.

She kept asking is that a bass..LOL
She looks bored. Waste of a good seat.
was there that night! It was a fantastic experience!
Shining Diamonds! Chick Corea is creating the context like a monster!
well that was a treat!!!
Fantastic, brilliant, superb, marvellous and all the other superlatives!
Wonderful to see VW enjoy playing the fretless bass with two evergreen innovators. Thanks for posting.
I am happy to see you working together for so many years. It is a great emotion for me. Congratulations
Great concert, fantastic musicians!!!
Wow! The Masters. I love that Chick has to read his stuff. He's written a HUGE collection of great music...no way he could have all of that memorized. Fantastic band! Absolute Genii!
Lol genii? For real? Whatever school of pretension you graduated from, demand a refund.
I'm sure it's there to remind him. He can't be reading it as if it's the first time, unless he's somehow written something new for this performance.
green fox , for sure all the solo's are improvised. But the rest of it is a song with a structure, melodie, etc..
green fox depends on the song and what the composer wants. Chick mostly has very strict and pretty complicated compositions, like Pat Metheny for instance. During the solo's things are free and can go anywhere.
That's right Chick, you and the guys totally NAILED IT!
I love how they fist pumped 🤣😂 they were like " we the shit!"
Incredible stuff of course!
R.I.P. Chick Corea
Thank you for capturing this moment.
Just a wonderful track .... superb playing and so much shared skill and respect.
What a beautiful melody and improvisation
Too bad John was hiding behind the music stand. Thanks for sharing.
That song...and with John...man!
Great!!!!

The first time I saw an electric bass bowed was Lee Jackson with the Nice !
Incredible! Thanks you for uploading
the focus of these musicians is incredible
What a tune..classic..thanks for the upload

It doesn't get much better than this, folks!
Victor Wooten is a bad ass. Well OK, all of them are but that bowed bass part is pretty cool.
R.I.P. CHICK God Bless You
This is wonderful.
Jeez, I liked the original album so much I actually bought it ...
me too....on 3 different occassions...LOL
How awesome was that, wow
Beautiful playing by Mr Corea...like fine wine!
John McLaughlin.
I wish Victor stayed with the bow, at least until the guitar solo. One of the greatest tunes ever.
Amazing recording of moment in time, a joy to watch. They break loose at around 5:08
John as badass as ever
How on God's earth did I miss this show?
Best picking I've seen by JM his style is Mahavishnu to the core very different interpretation than Al.
Ellos son virtuosos son únicos en este estilo de music, siempre escuche Return Forever, guitarrista original Al Di Meola, aquí Mclaughlin demostrando el porque, es considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas del mundo.
Chick was something else.
Just imagine this talented pair coming together in say 1976............................OMG
Go ahead John!
Totally excellent.
Meeting of the spirits ❤❤❤
Beautiful music!
Chick = Greatness...
...And Johnny never seizes to thrill me.
I love you for posting this! Thank you!!
Without going to my vinyl collection is this the same Romantic Warrior that is the titular track of the album by Return to Forever
Nigel Green Yes

WhAt A SUMMIT! Mahavishnu and Flecktone meet Return To Forever on RTF's playground. That's a special event.
Digging the tone of whatever that instrument is that Vic Wooten is playing.
McLaughlin sounds like he's subbing for Santana!!...love the guy!!...hi!...hi!...
Lenny White was incredible on the original tune. Not sure who is playing drums here, but White was outstanding and unbeatable playing this song.
The drummer here is Lenny White, just like on the original record
The Romantic Warrior has Gone to Forever…..
Victor Wooten plays way, way, way around the chord during his solo. When the chorus comes back around John M looks over towards Chick as if to say... "We're home now... who's turn is next?"
los amo
I've looked for the full version but it was always bad. thanks for the upload!
Pure class!
2:48 The Lady asked " is that a Bass ? 🔥🔥🔥
These guys honed it and owned it.

i like how wooten does rhythmic dsiplacement and the malcughlin shows how to do a solo with spirit
Great jam or tune!
McLaughlin lookin' like Richard Feynman. Coincidence? haha:) Great stuff.
