Really feel bad for people in these iced over areas. Ice is the worst. Snow is okay once it stops and the roads are clear but ice brings down power lines etc.
Wow I'm in Maine and we are heading to a few days of deep freeze. Wind chills Friday nite of -45. We are used to extreme weather. Be safe folks! Ice is the scariest....
This was Atlanta a few years ago. The first two inches of snow melted, then re-froze into an inch thick sheet of ice. Then it snowed another four inches on top of that! Instant gridlock and an entire city shut down. Doesn’t matter where you’re from, you can NOT drive on a solid sheet of ice!
In the 1990s, due to a job requirement, I had to leave for work in the early hours of the morning. The weather reports said there was an ice storm to the north and west of where I lived. My work was to the north and east, and the drive should have been no problem. As I drove toward work, the situation did not improve. When I arrived at the military facility, where I worked security, the facility was closed. That day, I proved that I could safely drive 100 miles round trip on solid ice at no more than 15 MPH. Only one car passed me, and I saw that vehicle a bit later in a field beside the road.
I tell my kids that if you find yourself in a situation like this and your unexpectedly in sheet ice, when you try to stop, put the car in neutral or push in the clutch, it allows your car not to be pushed by the engine and fight your braking attempts.
I'm always surprised by the number of people who DON"T know to do that. I live in Michigan and I think it's pretty common knowledge here, that when it's slippery, always put car in neutral as you approach a stopping point. Much easier to ease to a stop that way. I also keep a set of tire chains handy. I know...they are not "technically " legal in many places, but I'll risk it to get home safely(chains make a monumental difference on ice!).
Also, if there's a grass median or shoulder, driver on that shit. I am sure that Avalanche in the beginning, would've ploughed into that Cruiser, instead of heading to the median.
Reed you should wear a helmet. At least get some ice cleats to wear on your shoes. Never stop chasing. I heard you on the national news the other day. Good job.
Thank you for the diligent reporting. I have been watching you for years. It has been fun watching you grow. You are awesome. Thanks for the reliable work. Stay safe!
Not only is this three days of rain, but during the days the ice melts just enough to allow the rain coming in to ice over again at night making the next day worse than the first. I always laugh when my northern friends make fun of us until it happens, then they get it. We dont get snow, we get solid ice. Also, add in the fact that Texans dont drive in this stuff on a normal basis, these storms happen once every 3-5 years. So the inexperience really shows when you hit the roads. Vehicles all over the place.
I'm Northwest of Weatherford, and it's really bad out here. It's still raining and hasn't stopped since about 9 am. this morning! Ice is getting thicker amd thicker. Be safe out there
Reed, here in my area of Oklahoma we're gonna have a second round - Freezing rain & sleet today. Monday 'twas an ice storm. Little snow in between, btw. And what with temperatures remaining so low...😖 No driving 'till Friday
I grew up on a steep hill in New England. In the ice, you have to get up speed before you hit the hill, accelerating while climbing will spin your wheels.
Had this once on my street, a very steep hill, and people were falling down as soon as they stepped onto the path, having to go back on hands and knees. I believe wearing thick socks over your shoes/boots can help a bit if you've no ice shoes.
I grew up in Michigan and was very familiar with a lot of snow. But after I moved to Florida I had to take a trip to Pennsylvania and when I did they had this serious ice storm like this and it was the most terrifying experience of my life!
Sucks for Dallas folks, again. This happens in Dallas during winter weather. I live in Houston area and it has gotten cold and rainy here too but not frozen, YET! The DFW area is getting used to this as it is occurring quite often
I thought the same thing earlier. It's becoming more regular to have a harsh winter storm each year. It might be time for Texas to invest in more winter road crews. The line for winter weather is migrating further south. Maybe this will become normal.
I have. The worst one for me. Was the 2007 ice storm that hit missouri. It's all fun and games till your in a ditch. It's best to just stay home and chill watching movies and pray your electric don't go out.
I live in Alaska and this is considered Sunday afternoon driving at its best. We have the right tires though so it takes the majority of the risk out of the icy conditions. But studded tires will go anywhere you want to go.
@@bewell4743 We have a converted school bus and are planning on driving to Alaska this spring. When is a good to time to arrive? Coming from California.
Native Texan, and Dallasite here. All my life I have grown up with this weird north/central Texas weather. I've never got used to it. Lot's of folks from all over the country and also the world moving here. They all say the same thing, "I moved here to get away from this weather." Sorry Charlie! 108°F / 89% Humidity (oh it gets worse the closer to the Gulf you get) in the summer, all the way down to 15°F wind chill in winter. One of the folks I've met (a native Chicagoan), described it like this..."Texas has 10 months of Summer, 2 out of those Summer months are Hellish, and 5 weeks of Fall/Winter per year. Everything else is just Rain & Tornados." I laughed at him, but then realized that he really did sum it up very well.
I don't understand why people get out in this type of weather. Snow, you can drive through, but ice is a whole different story. But for reason you are out in it, turn in the direction of the skid, cause your going to spin out. A former Clevelander, now southerner. I got tired of that mess.
Are they salting the roads? I live in MN and when we know a storm like this is coming, dam near everyone is salting and sanding everything. I know they probably don't have as much equipment but, when sht gets bad we resort to adapted construction vehicles to get the job done. I feel like they have that? Maybe not the funding for it tho idk. Just curious.
Our Grandfather and fathers fell on ice and broke bones that put them in care homes where they've passed on. Being careful and staying off that ice is best. Pray God keep wisdom in our minds and hearts as we traverse through the dangers.
Southern and Southeastern states must begin investing in snow and ice removal equipment and treatment material just like the upper Midwestern states and the Eastern coast states...
Eso pasa casi todos los inviernos por lo menos una vez al año en el norte de Texas y en Oklahoma. Es terrible pero después de 3 días sale en sol y todo se derrita
Why is there not salt and sand everywhere? Genuinely asking. Knowing this storm was coming, the roads should've been salted beforehand and during. Sand as well. Why? Not enough workers, vehicles and funding? I'm really curious. Would appreciate an answer if anyone knows 🙏
I know they used to but don't really know if it's budget, man power, or pollution control as salt kills our grass here. Dallas is a Dem run city, after all.
Thanks man. I was thinking about going a mile in Arlington to get some food out but I think I'll pop a Hungry Man in the microwave instead. LOL Stay safe out there.
Welcome to dfw! I watched your live feed yesterday as you drove through my neck of the woods. You went right by where a tornado blew through a month ago. Got the sams club, luckily not the hospital right across the highway.
@@hansenfiet2539 Hes right. The black ice isnt everywhere, its patchy on the highways when the oil comes to the service during the day when the ice begins to melt.
3 years ago there wasn’t as much ice in the dfw area but it was cold as hell. Below 0. Down south was even worse. We had inches of ice with trees and power lines down. Below 0 wind chills and no power for days.
To me it's almost as if ppl forget that this has been normal for years. I'm in Little rock and everyone's always telling me we don't get these tips of storms yet every year I've been here we have, that 8 yrs now. I moved here in an ice storm. We had o e where we got well over 2 foot of snow which was the worst but still it's not new. Guess it makes for headlines right?
I live in fort Worth Texas and this has been a bad storm for us I pray for the ones with no power please try what ever you can to stay warm and safe. But the 2020 winter storm was just as bad 3 years in a row. Come on mother nature this is the south we shouldn't have this type of weather. Lol stay safe folks
Was in Dallas yesterday. Sunday 3 days after this video. Not a cloud in the sky. Sunny and 70. Not a spec of ice anywhere I couldn’t believe the difference it’s Texas. the weather can be a loose cannon. Visiting from San Francisco I’d rather take my chances with our fool politicians than a ice / snow storm
Freezing rain can shut down whole towns for a bit. I had my first freezing rain in january. I walked into town and it is really kind of haunting when the town litterally has nothing going on.
I know the fine people of Texas are awesome people but they are mostly not ready for ice. But let them all know that have just a little ground clearance that there is plenty of traction in that grass and curbs are not tall enough to hurt anything, so use those to stop that backwards slide. When we have to run calls here in ice storms I keep two tires off the road in the grass that gives you wonderful traction and a four wheel slide stopper. Oh and brakes are bad, if you start to turn sideways you are probably braking too much, so let off and get straight then try again a little easier. Enjoy the slide
Hello from warm Queensland Australia, the current temp is 34.4c(93.92f). We are having a heatwave here, and today is a far cooler day from yesterday. I will send you our heat if you send us your cold weather.🙂 Stay warm and safe.
I grew up in Plano. Left for military and ended up north. Hopefully making my way back. So does DFW not have a highway dept or does it not have sand or salt to lay down ? Obviously plows would rip up streets in Plano due to huge reflectors in turning lanes etc.

Had this once on my street, a very steep hill, and people were falling down as soon as they stepped onto the path, having to go back on hands and knees. I believe wearing thick socks over your shoes/boots can help a bit if you've no ice shoes.
Walking like I'm ice skating in slow motion works best for me Reed .
Yup
Stay safe and be careful. You can drive on this, but a lot of people can't. Watch out for the other guy! And, thanks for keeping us updated.
Thank you for your work. Stay safe!
God please protect the residents of Texas in Jesus Christ name, Amen.
Insane! Stay home!
It's melting now. Stop being dramatic ppl we can drive out by Thursday 10am
I have never experienced weather like this in my entire 62 years of life. I feel so bad for anyone dealing with this.
Keep it. Ice is the worst. As always thanks for coverage and explanations great as always
Native Texan, and Dallasite here. All my life I have grown up with this weird north/central Texas weather. I've never got used to it.
Lot's of folks from all over the country and also the world moving here. They all say the same thing, "I moved here to get away from this weather."
Sorry Charlie!
Everything else is just Rain & Tornados."
I laughed at him, but then realized that he really did sum it up very well.
I don't understand why people get out in this type of weather. Snow, you can drive through, but ice is a whole different story. But for reason you are out in it, turn in the direction of the skid, cause your going to spin out. A former Clevelander, now southerner. I got tired of that mess.
Sounds like fireworks going off with all trees snapping in the neighborhood, here in central Texas
😧🌰🐿
I remember when Oregon got hit with all the freezing rain. Stepped outside and almost landed on my ass. The streets were barren. Be safe bro
You can't fight mother nature, she'll beat you everytime! Thanks to you "Reed" w all the work you do to keep us aware.... Stay safe👍👌
Oh my goodness thats scary be careful Reed thank you so much for sharing the weather
Loving this style for weather news
DFW looks like a glazed donut!
Moved here from the Northeast a little over a year ago. I miss the snowplows there. They do not salt here ❄️
Yes…they salted, brined, sanded, etc. It sleeted a lot yesterday. Now we are getting freezing rain on top of it, so a nice thick glaze on everything.
Dude put on your ice skates and skate around filming. It will go viral.
Thanks for the explanation!
Hey Reed nice job!! have watched you since the tornado chasing days!!
Thanks for sharing Reed! Love your videos
You have managers of retail demanding their workers come into work under threat of getting fired. Its ridiculous.
geeze that is crazy!!
thanks Reed! I just wish everyone would listen to you.
You have to watch out for that black ice. Black ice is your most menacing ice because black ice will just jump out and get you.
Black ice is spotty. The ice in Texas is literally covering everything!
Yup. You will not win against it.
Do you think it will melt by Friday. Have to go to work on the highway and a lot of over passes
Lol stay safe folks
you picked the right car Reed, can never go wrong with Toyota specially Rav4
That's why I love living in north Dakota, it's too cold to get freezing rain ,it only happens like 2 times a year ,ill take -39 degrees over the ice
When you guys wanted Abbot. You got what comes with him. Now eat it.
In Texas we don't know how to drive in the winter (when there is frozen stuff on the ground & streets) & some of us like to go out and prove it. 🤠🤪
They already drive bad enough as it is in good weather in the DFW, north Texas area anyways.
Wow, very dangerous conditions. Great video
Looking GREAT Reed! Miss you on the other site but appreciate you. Do you ever stop at home 😂 bc you've been busy covering all states lol.
I'm in texas, close to brownwood. Looks like DFW got a lot more ice then we have so far.
Do they still sell tires with studs on them ? If not stay home !
Be safe Reed! Thank you for risking yourself and reporting this….please be safe!
Do the cities not have any salt truck's at all ?
Hello from warm Queensland Australia, the current temp is 34.4c(93.92f). We are having a heatwave here, and today is a far cooler day from yesterday. I will send you our heat if you send us your cold weather.🙂 Stay warm and safe.
Are you from the tv show from discovery years ago?
FINALLY a weatherman who’s correct and actually knows what he’s talking about.
I grew up in Plano. Left for military and ended up north. Hopefully making my way back. So does DFW not have a highway dept or does it not have sand or salt to lay down ? Obviously plows would rip up streets in Plano due to huge reflectors in turning lanes etc.
Lived In Fort Worth from 65 to 70. Never remembering it being this bad. Stay safe.
Is dallas or fortworth down town
When the air is above freezing, the raindrops are probably not supercooled, just almost frozen, and freeze on the colder ground immediately.
Yeah…seems right to argue against a PhD in Meteorology.
Please everyone stay safe, that's a horrible situation 😒👎Prayers 🙏❣
You are BRAVE to be out there! Stay as safe as possible all of you who are impacted by these terrible ice storms.
Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.
The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.
The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.
Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God:
Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.
He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.
He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.
The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.
Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.
For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.
He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.
He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly.
He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.
He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?
He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow.
He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.
He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them.
Praise ye the LORD.
Hello nice video, the Ice is dangerous it slippery ❤
Do snow chains not work in this condition? Don’t see anyone using them
I commuted in this. 50
Miles each day round trip. I’m a northerner so I have the driving skills. I planned my route to avoid the highway with its ramps/bridges. Planned my route to take side streets that were straight and flat.
Watching Texans drive on ice and snow can be quite entertaining.
Not as funny as someone from calif
No chains on???
Stay safe Reed!
Is Reed at the liquor store??
We all love it! We just stay home, sleep in and relax.
