  • In my sewing room New Look 6483,this simple pattern turned out to be infuriating! However, success came in the form of a cushion cover using some different fabric available to me.
Thanks to Jen from ‪@TodayinJensSewingRoom‬ , for starting the #fridaysews movement.

The pillow idea is genius - I love it!! I often get comments like you did from people who wonder how I get so much sewing done. And you are absolutely right - everyone’s situation is going to be different. Full-time job, small children, other hobbies… whatever! Comparison is the thief of joy they say so no comparison 😂 Fabulous pictures at the end as always. Thank you so much for sharing those. Have a good weekend! Xx 💞

I honestly have no idea how you have time to make garments let alone huge quilts! With your high pressure job and work schedule you certainly are an inspiration to many. I have never heard that saying before and it is spot on. I am so happy with that pillow its crazy, I felt those ties were a strangulation disaster waiting to happen 🤣. Have a great weekend at the island xx🚣🏼xx

Hello, Carole! Thank you so much for the lovely shoutout, you are so kind! And how true that we’re all so different in our stage of life and ability to dedicate time to our beloved hobby. Any time spent in the sewing room is precious time for me! 🥰 All of your makes are so lovely! And I smiled so wide to see your hubby’s baseball cap with a big Texas across it even as you explored Devon 😂 Love it! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Carole! Happy Sewing ❤~Tiffany

My Hubby collects hats from where ever he goes and he loves that Texas one! He got it when we went to Texas for my 50th ( 8 years ago 😱) when we visited Dallas and Southfork!! He has got a Dorset one but it is from Dorset, Canada🤣.
As I said in my video, I have no idea how you have time to sew anything as I appreciate how time consuming little ones are as WELL as your job! Super Mom for certain.
      Have a great weekend 🧵😊

Thank you, Carole, for answering the question about "how long it takes to make a top". I absolutely HATE those "X-Hour" patterns! I've been sewing for many years and I would never be able to make a top in "3 hours", nor would I want to! I'm not able to create a quality garment in that time, nor would I enjoy the rushed process! If I could sew a top in 3 hours from raw fabric to the end, I doubt I would then wear it more than 3 hours total.
Enjoy the process of sewing, savour the results, and you'll have a garment that you'll wear for years to come!
    Love your channel, Carole! ❤

I think unless you are in a timed sewing competition then a garment should take as long as it takes!! I suppose they do it to give an indication rather than a target. I am sure you could make a basic T shirt in 3 hours, or a pyjama top! I am a fast sewist I know and I think I produce stuff of a good enough quality. We are all very different as I said but what I didn't want the viewer to feel is that Friday Sews is a competition of how many garments we can all sew in a week. Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your comment 🧵😊

Great pillow, I would have never thought of doing it. My advice to beginner sewist is to take your time and not give up. When I returned to sewing garments after many years I thought I was gong to go crazy, nothing went correctly. Since that first dress I have been in my sewing room every week. Now sewing brings me joy and I love it. Even my teenage grandchildren love the items I make for them. Sewing helps relieve stress and anxiety in a way I would have never thought. I am now teaching my 13 year old granddaughter to sew and we are making dresses for project dress a girl, 5 so far and they are beautiful.

I thought when I retired earlier in the year, I would spend so much more time sewing. Well, I do sew more, but life gets in the way. And it's important to have a balance in my life. I make time for family, especially my retired hubbie. And I make time for exercise and healthy meal planning and cooking. I do want to use some smaller pieces or fabric to whip up some shorts and tshirts for my great nieces. I really love the wheel. I'm tempted to try something similar for myself.

I love that you have all those things going on in your life, you sound like me. I try and juggle childcare, music, fitness and all the housework as well. My Hubby still works though so I only sew at night as feel too guilty during the day to indulge in my 'hobby'! The wheel is such fun to do and has been used for many other things in years gone by. I can't wait to see your review on that top, because I would like to make it again! I had made it before in a fairly structured cotton. I'll try it in a flowier fabric next time.
I'm glad you addressed the topic of time spent sewing. I feel very slow, but when I look back at what I've done over the past 3-6 months, I am usually pleasantly surprised.
I've learned to intentionally view every aspect of sewing as actual sewing, even it isn't actually using the sewing machine. I've chosen to enjoy each step of the process. It's hard, because I really want the finished project, too.
I've also tried to adjust my attitude to view it all as learning, as well as enjoyment and personal therapy. That way, if I don't like my finished project, for whatever reason, it's ok.
I was so impressed that used those ties to make a project! Well done!! I have new sheets that came with a four inch ruffle on the top. My husband hated it! So we put that part to the foot of the bed. 😂

Hi Tammy, thanks so much for your comment. You need to cut that ruffle off and make something from it too 🤭.
I can't imagine that top in a more structured fabric I will admit but I ended up with way too much fabric at the back even though I sized down. The video will be coming out on Monday anyway so you can see!

Pretty tops Carole. Love those fresh blue and white fabrics. And absolutely, sewing at speed or lots of things is not necessary for this lovely hobby. I’ve made all my biggest mistakes when I’m rushing or not sewing with care and attention. I know what your viewer means though, watching TH-cam sewers who create lots of wonderful garments is great but it can feel like we should be doing more and quickly. We all sew and create differently and that’s just fine.

One hour sew!🤣🤣🤣🤣 I've never made anything in the time someone else says it should take
In regard to the viewer asking about sewing speed - a big factor I believe I've noticed is how precise a sewist is compared to others. I see some people just slapping those pattern pieces onto the fabric and whizzing away with their cutting. I, on the other hand, cannot bring myself to do that. I was taught to carefully line up the selvedges if folding fabric in half and if I decide to fold each selvedge to the center to cut pieces on the fold, I always precisely measure the width from selvedge to fold to make sure the folds are on grain. I also measure from each end of the grainline arrows to the selvedge on any piece not cut on the fold to make sure the pieces are laid on grain. Everyone should just sew in whatever way and at whatever speed they're comfortable with and enjoy THEIR process.
Loved your creativity with the bedding ties! X

Hi Carole, you are definitely creative, that cushion cover is genius! What a great way to recycle. I love that top, but your right, something is wrong with that pattern. There shouldn’t be that much difference in construction of each view. I can’t wait to see your wheel make, I love that fabric, but you know I love all fabric. I hate that your viewer felt like she was a good enough sewist, no one should feel like they are not good enough. I’ve been sewing since I was 5 or 6 years old and am retired now, but can’t find time to sew as much as I want to. I only made one garment last week and yesterday I finally got to cut out and make two quilt blocks. I should have that quilt finished by now, but I can’t always get into my sewing room every day, sadly. We all sew at our own pace, no pressure, it’s just for fun, thankfully. Take care 😊

Re the comment, it shook me that I could be responsible for making someone feel that way so had to say something. As you quite rightly say, sewing should be enjoyable and we should be happy with whatever we produce. Look how excited I was with the simple cushion cover 🤣.

Great idea on how to make the pillow from beautiful fabric that might otherwise have gone to waste! Also great that you were able to salvage your pretty fabric and the New Look top from it. I often wonder how some folks can get so much done but I am slow at sewing although I've done it a long time, partly because I don't want to make mistakes (I do anyway, of course...). The photos at the end are lovely. Sounds funny to hear you say, "Stay cool!" So many people have success with that pattern so don't worry at all, its the sizing I slipped up on. What a brilliant idea using the ties for a pillow. What in the world was Laura Ashley thinking.you would think that company would know better. I hope you are going add a zipper to the pillow case that you sleep on.

Thanks Anne. I think they thought it looked 'vintage' perhaps but just an accident waiting to happen if you ask me! The pillowcases still had the envelope part to seal them don't worry, no zipper needed. Sorry I didn't show that in the footage, too busy being cross about the ties 😂. Thanks for watching 🧵😊

Hi Carole! I would have done the same thing with those straps-why would they even add those? You made a fabulous pillow!!! I love watching you work through ideas-it’s like we are inside your head 😂
I can’t wait to see your old lady blue trousers! And I totally agree with your answer to the new sewing question❤️ I squeeze in whatever time I can- like we all do- it just varies for some people. Beautiful pics at the end, thank you for sharing ❤❤❤

Why why why add something like that onto pillowcases? I mean surely it could cause an accident?! 😂. I am just glad I put them to a far better use. My old lady trousers are all cut out ready to sew and also the blue linen for the shorts. I just need to stop procrastinating this weekend and sew them. Sewing is our hobby and keeps us out of mischief doesn't it! Have a super week and thanks my friend for watching xxx💗

Oh Agata I am so disappointed with myself that I had to look up SAHM! I too was one of those and very proud of it, my kids tell me now how wonderful it was to have me around. I know that isn't the trend anymore! I remember like you being on endless committees, helping readers at school and making costumes etc! You do so many things and are so generous with your time for people.
I am my own boss now with my time except for a couple of school picks up and you think I would be able to sew all day but I never end up doing that and just sew in the evenings!! Treasure your sewing room moments when you can xx

Happy Friday, Carole! Your NL6483 top came out beautifully! Love the addition of the little buttons above the side slits. Home run on that make!!! A decorative bed cushion is a great idea for the annoying Laura Ashley ties. You are so creative and talented, which is why I love watching your YT channel. You always have such beautiful makes! Your makes for your grandsons (like the jackets and costumes) are absolutely amazing!!! BRAV-O for saying that sewing is a fun hobby, not a serious competition. Yes, some people have more time for sewing than others. And some are more experienced sewists than others and can make a garment (or quilt, bag, or whatever) in less time. The YT sewing community is here to celebrate and share each other's makes and accomplishments, and to share craft knowledge/skill with each other to promote our hobby. While I may not be in a period of my life where I can do that right now, I hope to be a part of the YT sewing community at some point in the near future. In the meantime, I can enjoy watching and learning from others, and applaud their achievements. So thank you so much for saying what you did! xx🥰 Dori

Thank you so much for saying I am creative. I do have these crazy ideas sometimes and they are mostly in bed at night! I got so angry with those ties I laid awake trying to think of what I could do with them 😂.
Wonderful words Dori on the sewing community and when you are able, you are going to be a fantastic vlogger, more importantly I am desperate to put a face to the name!!
Sewing is my hobby which I adore, of course I have other interests but it is the one I think I enjoy the most and am best at. I am not in it to improve myself or challenge myself but if that happens along the way then I am happy enough!
Hope all is going well for you 'move wise' and enjoy the rest of your weekend 🧵😊xx

Hi Carole! Wow!! All those ties on your duvet cover and pillow cases!! What a flop of a design. Maybe that was they way they were fastened shut in the "olden days" and this was their way to create the "old look"?? Ah well, I would want the ties cut off, too. How clever you were to turn them in to a pillow cover. Good one!

Hi Carole. I like the cushion you made and agree those ties would also have driven me spare and definitely been chopped off to be reused as something else (probably a cushion). I also have the Burda t-shirt pattern, in fact it’s my go to pattern for t-shirts, although I have modified it a bit as I have lowered the neckline, an possibly the sleeve and body length (can’t quite remember). It’s one of the few patterns which I use again and again and am quite proficient and producing a t-shirt fairly quickly. The rest of my sews just take as long as they take, there’s usually no hurry. Looking forward to your next vlog. Take care and bye for now ☺️

      @socarole66  หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Ann, so far NO ONE has said I should have kept the ties so what on earth were Laura Ashley thinking with that design! It wasn't clear in the stock photos either or I wouldn't have ordered them. I was really interested to hear you like that Burda pattern. I have now finished it with a bit of tweaking here and there, I really like the neckline actually. T shirts are such a quick make for me too and a real palette cleanser after something tricky.
Hope you have a good week and thanks for watching as always 🧵😊

    Hello Carole,
I also make the Burda 6820 and the curve between my waist to my hips is way too round. It's like an hourglass. It just flaps around my hips. I adjusted them to a straight line. That may not be the intention of the pattern, but I do like the sleeves and chest. Thank you for your nice videos. I didn't know Lutterloh at all and may never do it myself, but your You Tube videos are great. greetings from Belgium😊❤

Hello Belgium! Thanks so much for your comment on the Burda T shirt. I did spot that it was VERY shaped at the waist so I altered that before I cut it out but it is still tight! I have finished it though and it is wearable now after teeny tiny hems 😂As you say, the neckline is really nice. Glad you like the Lutterloh videos and I know they aren't for everyone. I'm so proud. You saved the LAURA ASHLEY ties. Seriously, that was brilliant! Love the top and so maddening when the shoulders are too big - I feel your pain, that seems to happen to me a lot. But you look fantastic in it. Beautiful blue and white - we are so like-minded! Katie will love her bag - you'll figure it out in no time because you're a whiz at that. Lutterloh is proof! And sounds like you're having a bit of Florida this week. Currently it's 94º with a "real feel" of 107º and 65% humidity. Pretty standard fare for FL - i'm off to get $1.99 patterns at JoAnn's and it'll probably rain. Time for those summer monsoons that run us right off the road. Thinking of you! xoxoxox

So we have had 22c and sunny today, hang out the flags!! I bet you would kill for that temperature right now wouldn't you. You need to move North with Trish 😉.
