We got Ranger Body Armor in 1993, and thought it was the coolest thing we'd ever seen. Much superior to those crappy old flak jackets. An added bonus was the stories about them being RPG-resistant.
Ok I’m not gonna cry, but you were literally in my home land a year before I was born😭😭. And I lived a block away from the US Embassy in Monrovia my whole life before migrating to the US. I remember the sight of the marines convoy passing right in front of the compound we lived in during the 2003 civil war, like it was yesterday. It felt surreal seeing em with my own two eyes outside the TV screen. And since then I knew I wanted to be a part of that breed of warriors (US military). My mom who lived in the US at the time had sent me a set of PJs that just happened to be woodland camo. And I kid you not.. other than my school uniform, and now my OCPs, that was my most worn piece of clothing.
I hear people over here say “I was going to join, then bla bla bla”. But if only u knew how many kids from my hometown wish they got a shot at serving in the us military.
11 of us from my graduating class in high school are currently living here in the US and 9 are currently serving.

I was also part of the Iraq invasion in 03, and as a matter of fact I think we might’ve interacted for a brief moment during a detainee transfer. I was nobody special, just a regular soldier. Anyhow, this video definitely brought me back. We invaded wearing old school flak vests, and weren’t issued IOTVs until a week or so into the invasion. I very distinctly remember using the Blackhawk and TT gear. I really enjoy your channel and reminiscing in history. Keep up the good work.

I wish more channels got into this stuff. The history of gear and equipment is so fascinating, especially from an actual vet. I was wondering if you'd do a History of Special Forces Footwear sometime. The channel Rose Anvil did a breakdown on the old Vietnam era jungle boots and I thought it was really interesting.

Great video. I was a ARNG member from 1987-2018. The change in gear and uniform was mind boggling, especially after 9-11. DARC was only a few miles from me as well as TEES. When I went to Iraq in 2007, they issued us IBA, with side SAPI plates and DAPS.
It was funny that when we went to Scania and the 34th BCT owned it, they didn’t care if your ACU’s were bloused. Then the 82’d took over and you couldn’t enter the CSC w/o bloused pants and a PT belt.
I also remember eating a crappy pizza at Camp Adder and seeing a guy with a 1911 as a sidearm and thinking , I bet he is SF or some other agency person.
These episodes are pure gold. Please keep it going!

While attending HALO school our 2/75 B-Co 3/3 platoon medic almost died because the rucksack velcro leg strap came undone and he frisbeed until his AOD activated. I've hated velcro on critical equipment ever sense.
This guy is a classic treasure. He reminds me of the weapons guy on my first team in 3/7 Ft. Gulick, Panama; Pete Moosey. Pete retired as a CSM, he’s still my best friend. Love you Pete.
This is so cool hearing about stuff like this. Sadly i was born in 2004 and missed all of this cool history until recently, technology changed so much from the time of me being a kid to now.
First hand experience like this is so valuable. As someone interested in these pieces of gear starting in current day, a lot of this information seems like it's been lost to time until you can get it straight out of the mouth of the guys who were there!
In the invasion my marine recon team had 1 set of plates and they were XXL. They went in a quad con. We had 782 gear. H harness with a Flak Jacket. Most carried a chest rig. M16 "The Musket" A2

Love hearing about the gear used during the early days of the war. As a geardo, the gear of the 90s and early 2000s is so interesting to me. Those were the newsreels and pictures I saw growing up and wanting to join the army.

I remember when we first saw EOD Marines wearing mich helmets and Eagle Industries plate carriers in Afghanistan around late 2008. This was startling to us because our unit was issued the PASGAT helmets and MTV's made popular during Ramadi. Let's just say they had a nicer time getting around on foot patrols.

15 years ago I found one of those OD blackhawk chest rigs and one of the Eagle nylon drop leg holsters at the surplus store on Ft Polk entrance road for maybe 10 bucks a piece I still have them both and used the holster at my first carbine course back in 2011

My first Iraq deployment was Sept 05 to Sept 06. I deployed with A 5/113th FA from North Carolina National Guard. We were given a line haul transportation mission because there was a bigger demand for truck drivers than rocket artillery. That time in 2005 was the point where only armored vehicles were allowed outside the wire. We were issued the Point Blank IBA. At some point in early 2006 we were issued the add on side hard armor. Since we were a National Guard unit doing a non combat mission, we were issued the old school ALICE clip magizine/grenade pouches. Needles to say most of use bought our own pouches.

Really interesting stuff! Thanks for putting these out, and also appreciate you being active online and interacting with folks about these topics. I think it's wild how fast technology has changed--I remember thinking those modified DCUs with the sleeves on the pockets were the absolute pinnacle of cool guy gear...the modern Crye uniforms make those look ancient. The "junk protector" on the old body armor made for really good laughs too.

Great information about what changes sf guys made over the years both as individuals and as units. Very interesting to see what changed and why and also the continued improvements after that.
Awesome video. When I got out of the Marines in 09 a lot of the key board warriors were talking smack about Black Hawk Industries and lambasting BHI for being "For the poors" but Black Hawk fielded a ton of gear to special units. BTW Big ups to your friend who started Mayflower. The company that we today refer to as Velocity systems makes some seriously kick ass gear!!
I remember some guys in my troop getting mayflower prototypes from Travis. Years later I try looking for some Mayflower Research stuff and discover it is Velocity now.🤯

Mayflower/Velocity Systems is good stuff
Dang, brings back a bunch of memories. I was in 2/19 and since I was a fully up to date 18D it seemed like I was the point man for the BN, and ended up backfilling the medic position in C51 at Kabul when the command element went forward during Operation Anaconda. During that time we tried to keep a low profile in the city, so no baseball caps. We drove all over the city in a beat-up Toyota van with a right hand drive and blended in well, until we opened our mouths. I had a photographer's vest that I carried 2 mags, my radio, a Garmin Etrex GPS, several field dressings and a standard army issues tourniquet. I wore a Level III vest. Most of the 5th grp guys stuffed a SAPI plate in the front of the vest, but I was a big guy and it didn't fit well for me. Mostly I ended up being the 5th group S4 driver/PSD when I was in Kabul. RGR on everything you say about the SPEAR system LCE and rucksacks. Eventually after my team came into country and we took over running Chapman airfield. I ended up with a Blackhawk chest rig carrying a almost identical load, and a Tactical Tailor 3 day bag with the Tactical Tailor CLS bag on top and my pockets stuffed full of pressure dressings and other medical supplies.
Love it. This is like Forgotten Weapons, from Green Beret operational perspective.

In Iraq, 2004, as a Marine, I wore an Interceptor vest with MOLLE which I attached woodland mag pouches, and Kevlar MICH helmet. The room on the vest only allowed for about 4 mags (I'm a small guy), so I bought myself a Blackhawk drop-leg mag pouch which I quickly learned doesn't feel great when you have to run and jump into prone. Just like you, we didn't have doors on our humvees and about half-way into our deployment we got bolted on steel doors which were held shut with 550 chord.
During that deployment I had the opportunity to work with 5th Group soldiers in Ramadi thanks to a personal relationship my CO, Paul Stubbs, had with them, being a former enlisted Ranger.
Again, another small world detail discovered by watching your videos. Seems like our careers have crossed paths several times over the course of 20 years.

We got the interceptor vests a couple/few months before Kosovo in 99, replacing the flaks, along with the LBE. We continued to use our ALICE mag pouches, canteens, etc with it. We did not have plates. For a right hander such as myself the mag pouches were both places on the left hand side on the belt, didnt use the ones integrated in the lbe because they sucked.
Having now watched all of it, the bit about the velcro not being real velcro caught me off guard but not entirely surprising.😅 I experienced the Turkish Army of the 2000's and you can imagine how many cheap versions of real things I've witnessed but strangely never knock off velcro. 🤣

I had to double take when you said Hawija. That was my AO on my first deployment. Dang, aint heard of that place in a looong time.
I still have my RACK that I bought from Specialty Defense back in 2000. It's been modified so I can use a dangler and some other stuff, but it's a great piece of gear.
Brigade quarter master was another favorite. I still have a few of the old Blackhawk catalog before it was sold. Blackhawk was the high speed Sears and robucks Christmas wish list military gear catalog.

Yes we were 3/325 then became 1/508 round 1996.
sounds like you were ins SF, when i joined the army in 94. prior to 2001 only time I saw plate armor was in germany each company had a squads worth of ranger armor that was left over from bosnia/macadonia.
besides that we wore the flak vest, but that was only on deployment (albania/kosovo 99), or ntc training for live fire, or when doing table 12 trench.
I still have my LCE I wore during the invasion of iraq over my IBA. We were issued (1st bde 3rd ID) mollie stuff but only one set for 2 people..since I was a m203 gunner/team leader I got like two mag poches and and nade holder.. that same thing happened with us 3rd ID guys, the word got out that we were like special republican guard (shot first ask question later). the triangle patch, and daimond patch you could shoot at and they would run.. but the square patch with the lines... they will stop and shoot you!
Then in 2004 in afghanistan we had the IBA with flik system.. the chain of command (the battalion CSM) said that everyone was to wear the flik system and it was to be set up the exact same way....

Wasn't SF but 11B. In 05 we ran the point blank IBA and it was moderately comfy until they started loading us with fuckin side panels everywhere
