    Due to a logistical error, I was issued a new gas mask without turning in my old one, so I still had my complete MOPP suit and gas mask from the invasion when I EAS'd. Unfortunately, it all burnt in a house fire, along with my tri-colors and goggles, after I got out. My K-bar I used in the invasion burnt in the "Great Al Asad Tent-City Fire" of 2004. Not all, but some, of my "war-trophies" (Republican Guard uniform, Saddam Dinars, etc.) from the Invasion were lost to Hurricane Katrina/Rita, because I thought it would be best to send them home to keep them safe..bad decision. I was in 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, RCT-7, three deployments to Iraq, 2003-2005.

    • @Brent0331
      @Brent0331  7 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      Semper Fi brother. That sucks about your war trophies. I should have left that country with far more than what I brought back. What pissed me off even more is when I came back in '04 they changed their rules allowing bayonets to be sent home. They confiscated mine in '03.

    Thanks for making this video. This will make a good reference for military collectors like myself. Most people dismiss modern gear as worthless surplus just like they did in WW2 but in 30 or so years this stuff will have value and people will care about the history.

      It's already starting. Now that there's documentaries and movies and it's been 20 years now, it's considered retro to some. Crazy. Some of my first memories were of this invasion. US being in Iraq was normal to me that was the status quo I grew up with, it's weird hearing ppl talk about it like a retro historical event.

  • @krazykat64
    @krazykat64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Pretty much the same situation happened with us concerning boots during Desert Storm. When we got to the rear after the invasion was over they finally issued us desert boots for the trip home. Otherwise we had to wear those hot ass standard issue black leather boots the whole time.
    One thing that really galled me was they kept telling us that the availability of hot weather boots was extremely limited, but on the odd occasion that supply guys would bring up hot chow or something they would almost always be wearing a nice new pair of desert boots. Typical.

    Good video , it's crazy how time flies I remember being a middle school kid when my my uncle deployed to Iraq in 2003 , I was in highschool school when my cousin got shipped to Iraq in 2006 and in 2009 I was the one on my way out there. In 2011 all 3 of us got to deploy under the 1st Cav Div - 1st BCT to the same area. It all seems like it was yesterday but it has almost been 10 years since my first deployment .

    In Russia, our team makes the USA divisions as an airsoft kit.
    Just in case, we're not trying to insult someone and we don't think, that we're real warriors or USMC members.
    In my opinion, OIF is a very interesting, exciting and impressive part of America's history

    Nice video, brother. I was with A/1/7, and ultimately Task Force Ripper. This was Desert Shield/Desert Storm, in 1990/1991. Our Battalion Commander is the new Secretary of Defense, LTCOL (then) James Mattis. I still have a lot of my gear, including my green jungle boots with dog tag in the laces. I also have the green/black night smock that was used to defeat night vision devices ( it does work, but you see chocolate chip desert camo and black boots below the smock!!). Nice video, brother. I think about those days from time to time. So many assholes don't have a clue what went on and what is going on in the world. Semper Fi, Bro!

      You ever been to Dhaharahn Saudi Arabia? that was my dads base during the Gulf War. Couple times a week before and during the war he had to drive to Riyahd to attend mission briefs at Coalition HQ and give aircrew readiness briefs to General ShwartzKaupf since my dad was a Aviation Tech Department head. He also ran the Desert Rat Saloon over in Dhaharahn via the 71st TFS.

      I was in Task Force Ripper as well, but in Charley 1/7 (Suicide Charley, only company with two, count 'em, two guidons!).
      I remember the night vision cammie overgarments, we also got to keep ours.
      I was issued an ANPAQ-4A infrared night aiming light to use with a set of night vision goggles, which were in this bulky hard case. I traded them for an AN/PVS-4 night scope that I mounted on top of my M16A2 carrying handle with two bilge pump hose clamps from the Amtrak, because the mounting bracket for the night aiming light took up the mounting hole in the M16 handle. I also cut off the rubber cheek rest from an AT4 launch tube and taped it with 90 mile an hour tape to my buttstock so I could get a cheek weld this way.
      It was heavy as hell and only reached accurately out to about 250 yards, and since I had to remove it for daytime use its initial zero was worthless, but I felt cool with my Terminator weapon. 😁
      I made Corporal in the field and they made me a fire team leader, so they took that away and gave me an M203. Oh well.

    Just found this video, though I've been subscribed for a while. What a trip down memory lane! I call the invasion "The Mother of All Traffic Jams" as five out of six lanes of the highway were crammed with northbound vehicles. I was a reserve CA guy with a two-man team attached to the 377 TAACOM (now TSC) Forward element that established the logistics facilities at Tallil Air Base, BIAP, and Garma Station west of Baghdad. We established theater logistics for Task Force Tarawa when they were about to run out of their basic load of just about everything. We had almost exactly the same gear as you did, except that I had to borrow a long arm every time I left the wire. Great material, and you've kept more of your gear than I did. Can't wait to see your second tour in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    As a historian, it makes me happy you guys often wrote where and when you were deployed on the inside of the hats. They may end up in a museum some day! I see similar details on historical artifacts from time to time, so that one made me laugh.

    Nice Brent! I didn't realize that the recon wrap had a name. In my backpacking gear I had a material tube by a company named Buff. Weight is about 1.5 oz and is extremely useful. Thanks man!!

    LOL!! Gunny, your comment about not getting new gear until you were leaving the theater made me laugh hysterically. I was in the first Gulf War, a Navy Corpsman at a Fleet Hospital in S.A. We went over there with our Woodlands and black leather boots, and wore them the whole time we were there. Looked like a bunch of trees in the desert, LOL!! The day before we shipped out to go home, here comes supply with a load of 6 color deserts for us, so nothing has changed apparently... :D. Hopefully you don't take offense when I say I'm envious of that experience. My recruiter joined in 2001. I always wished I had been a part of that generation. Ton of respect for you and the guys you were with. Awesome video and I hope you do more in this series.

      ***** Not a problem, we all have schedules. I'm 19 years old and talking to the Army right now about going in as infantry. However, recently I've been debating going for the Marine Corps instead. I haven't gone to MEPs or anything yet but I've taken the asvab and sent my packet up for approval. I wanted to know your take. We don't know each other, but you've got a lot of combat experience and you clearly have a lot of love for the Corps. If you have time to respond, I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks.
