    I noticed you don't sell mealworms on your website. But you are still raising them . Cool.

      No, I sold off all my worms over a year ago. Just focusing on the sifter tray side of the business now..

    I plan on using auto sorting, but which sifter size should I use for separating mealworms from frass? Also, is there a way to sift pure frass without baby worms?

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trick is to separate your larger worms and beetles from your babies so you don’t ever have to sift our frass with eggs/babies in it. Babies don’t eat much so they don’t produce much frass. I usually don’t sift until around Week 6+, and by this time the babies are large enough to get caught j in n the sifter.
      1/30 mesh is the largest gap size I would use to sift out frass. Some other farmers use 1/40 and even 1/50 to help separate the frass from tiny bran pieces.

      This is a company secret, unfortunately. It has been tested and retested, and then redesigned and tested again to find the best size needed. Giving this info away would be giving my business away!

    what size sifter for separating the eggs

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t ever sift substrate with eggs in it. I use a pupae sifter to separate them from the worms, then they turn into beetles and lay eggs. The eggs stay in the substrate until they grow into worms. I remove the beetles every 2-3 weeks using a 1/8 mesh sifter found here: tinyurl.com/bucketsifter

    What difference is there between plastic and wood?

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, Javier! The wood is slightly thicker and a bit more durable, but the acrylic is able to be washed and sanitized. I personally use the wood one, but the acrylic is more popular with my customers.

    How often do you sift a tray of mealworms?

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It really depends on the temperature outside. When it’s warmer out they pupate faster, so maybe every 7-10 days. Otherwise I sift every other week.

      @shaiken2021 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At spacecoastmealworms.com? Ok - found it...
      Drop down menu at top right/catalog = 2 listings - one is for pupae sifting tray (shows only wood squarish ones in pix) - click on that, then Size on next page - at bottom of Size menu is Round trays
      👍

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the round ones are brand new, but just as effective! If you have a lot of worms I recommend the large or extra large size though. The round can only handle so many at a time.

    • @spacecoastmealworms
      @spacecoastmealworms  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it shouldn’t be that difficult to find the Round sifters. The Small size (on the main page) is the default size, but if you click it you’ll access the drop down menu. It’s just the way the website is set up, unfortunately..

    is there a version of that designed for superworms?

    • @scottjost857
      @scottjost857 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      supers don’t pupate unless you manually separate them into small containers, so there’s no need. Unless you want to use this sifter to size out the largest worms..
