@@ModelA KFRC and KSFO were rivals here in the San Francisco area in the 50's/60's and beyond. Don Sherwood was the "star" @ KSFO Difficult and outspoken at times but GREAT !!! He had a loyal sidekick (Aaron Edwards) and Hap Harper flying around in a airplane doing early morning "commute" traffic. He would "banter" with both and routinely belittle if given the opportunity. Don was instrumental in "saving" the San Francisco Bay when developers and local authorities wanted to fill large areas for financial gain. A plan that would have been a "disaster" !!!
Thanks for the kind and generous thoughts and remembrances of the prior generation so routinely currently referred to as the "simple"/throwaway old folks !! All qualities that have been methodically "exorcised" from the current generation beginning in 1980 and via the "digital" revolution. Very SAD and undeniable !!! A fun time had by all there in Illinois, some great advice and complements. Thanks for the trip, the fun ride and the enjoyable visit to our neighbor state. Great video. Completely agree about getting the next generation involved. I let anyone and everyone sit in my car or take pictures with it. Like Zack, I own my grandfathers Model A and every time I drive it it's like I'm getting to spend time with grandpa. Thanks for the transmitter tour. I grew up around radio and my mom was the Sunday afternoon dj at KWRE here in Missouri for a while in the early 80s. When her shift ended she had to shut things down because it went off the air until sometime monday morning. I was always impressed with the size of the equipment.
What a fun time. Growing up in Michigan we could get WLS at night in the Grand Rapids area. I had a old 1930s Philco table top radio that my grandfather dug out of the attic and gave to me. It still worked! I still have it but unfortunately it no longer works. That radio required a external antenna. My dad worked for the power company so he got me 75 feet of bare ground wire that I had woven into the rafters of the house!
What a cool video - great to see a family vehicle that is actually used and shared with everyone, and the WLS thing at the end was really cool too! I work in IT in the core network team at a university, two of the team are huge radio guys, and in a lot of ways, the evolution of ratio/transmit gear follows with network gear. It's always weird when you celebrate new tech going in, and then 20 years later or more everyone refers to it as "old" - time flies.
Hi Friends!: What a great video!!! Thank you and especially the Pradel family for sharing their model A with the world! It's what the old car hobby SHOULD be like! WLS The Prairie Farmer Station!! Anyone who lived in the eastern Midwest has listened to that station! Could pick it up REALLY well at night in Central Indiana! The transmitter tour was FASCINATING!!!!
As a new owner of a 31 DeLux (Detroit built) Fordor here in the UK, I had done my research before buy it, which included many of Pauls You Tube vids, and the one of Zak driving his family car. So it was a great to see you guys meeting up in this video! I too allow people to climb into my car when they show interest, and all are surprised how comfortable the rear seat is!
I liked your tour of the WLS tower. I grew up near there in the 1950s and 60s. In fact a childhood friend of mine lived on the farm immediately to the west of the tower. Our school was about two miles to the east and every once in awhile WLS would bleed into our school PA system. Never got inside like you did.
Sweet, glad you came to visit the Mid West. You were just south of us!! Hope the weather was good for you and Tina. Hope you enjoyed your time up here. Better to visit now then in January. We could have 1-2 feet of snow on the ground at that time :) And 30 below zero. We really know how to do winters right up here...LOL! Hope you had a great time in MI as well. Looked like a good looking Model A you were driving. I am sure you loved it. Have a great weekend my friend and hope you make it home safe as well. God bless!
The A that I own came from my dad. He bought it when I was a year old and 61 years later it's mine. I too open the doors at car shows and invite people to sit in and enjoy the "ambiance".
Yes! We need more "Get in" signs on historic cars! I have one on my Citroen 2CV as well when I am on a car show. My 2CVs are my daily drivers (summer and winter), so curious people can't put more wear on my car than I am doing. Parts are as easy to source as for the Model A. It was great to see you with Zach as I subscribe to both your channels. Where you were driving his 1931 Model A was the next city over from where I grew up in the 1960's and 70's.
