I usually get this music during the literal calm before the storm, when temperatures are below -80, the city well stocked and full of hope... but operating entirely on a blind faith that blocks out any voices of rationality that say -150 can not be survived.

The Faith soundtrack sounds more solemn while the Order soundtrack sounds more climactic. Both are really good and I love how you can still feel the desperation as is in every other soundtrack.

Faith is a powerful tool. By faith I don't mean dogmatic religiousness, but pure devotion of believing into something without demanding any explanation or evidence. It can put a smile on the most drowned face, light one's path even if the surrounding darkness seems impenetrable and bring warmth into a freezing home.

As Napoleon has once said, Faith is the only reason the poor do not go and murder the wealthy

People underestimate the extent to which science and engineering depend on faith... as the complexities of any topic mount to extremes, you get to a point where you can't keep scrutinizing every premise. As a collective we must always strive to keep doing so, but as an individual, you have to trust a large part of the process on faith.

@LCTesla That's kind of wrong. The key difference between science and faith is that there is no central authority figure on science - science is just things that are collectively known.
Science is not dogma either. Origins of Species is a seriously irrelevant book at this point. Science changes over time while things like the Bible do not - Origins of Species is not cited half as much in new findings in the field it pioneered.

Listening to this randomly made me remember the many times back in school (k-8th it was a catholic school) we would walk to church 3 times a week no matter how cold it was and this song just about perfectly fits the feeling of walking in a large group in the cold of the north surrounded by snow just to go to church

●City name: Mechanica, a Latin word describing something Mechanical.
●Religion: Generator/Steamtech worship. The Generator is the physical body of God, and the Automatons are the physical Angels that keep the city running. The Speaker of Truth is the infallible word of God on Earth...he is the Prophet of Truth. Heaven is seen as a Realm of Warmth, and Mechanical Structure much like the city. Hell is a Cold Realm, a Dark Void of Punishment.

The sad thing is that after the temperatures becomes much warmer again who's to say that the city won't collapse after things have calmed enough for them to realize what they've done? Maybe they're no different than the storm, worse even.

I'm as atheist as they come, but I have to say: if you're building a city that is the only hope for humanity's survival and you had to choose between Order and Faith as the guiding philosophy of your society, Faith would probably be the more effective one in the long run. Faith doesn't have to be true for it to work: as long as people *believe* it to be true, that if they persevere heaven will await them or some such rubbish, it'll inspire hope and devotion. That's rewarding in circumstances such as these. A purely totalitarian iron-fisted Order route offers people little reward in comparison, so they're more likely to resist it sooner: it has less chance to survive in the long run.
It's quite interesting, really. This game has made me realize more fully how much religious belief is essentially a survival mechanic. Atheism, which is probably more 'true' than any religion has ever been, is only on the rise now because we live in a stable society: we don't *need* the gods as we once used to. Religion will probably return with a vengeance come some sort of Apocalypse that will overturn society.

So would I, but think about it. In a hopeless situation like that pure discipline will only get you so far: there's a reason why modern secular dictatorships don't tend to last particularly long while monarchs and clerics who claim to rule 'by the Grace of God' establish regimes that last for hundreds if not thousands of years. A dictator who rules without the backing of some divine authority will sooner or later fall to dissent. A religiously based figure can always blame reverses on the will of God.

It's actually even more necessary than that. The WEST has abandoned religion, and only the west. And that is, as you say, because we thought we no longer needed it. Yet it's hard not to make the case that western societies are now in decline. I don't believe in god, but I do think it's hard to argue that the two are unrelated.

As a fellow atheist, I agree completely. We need hope to persevere. Human beings, for all our accomplishments and victories, are still so incredibly limited. Limited by our hearts, minds and circumstances. There is only so much hope we can put into even the best of us, not even talking about ourselves. Even the purest, most well intentioned, most accomplished humanitarian will still die, and that is one of the few things we can be absolutely certain of. In trying times, especially in a society on the brink of collapse, we will ALWAYS fall back to the comforts of religion. Whether any of it is true does not matter. What matters is that it gives us hope. Hope in something greater than our fragile human bodies and minds, that will watch over us, however that may be. It gives us the strength we need to even WANT to carry on, and not just lay down, accept our inevitable fate and die.
