So, this is related to a comment further down, this doesn't have much to do with this video if not for the dreadfullness of the soundtrack/frostpunk universe. but yeah, have at it, since i wrote it all anyway and don't really know where i could put it down~
"Somehow, this just made me think of a strategy game i'd like to see. A strategy game where it's not about winning... nor it is losing...but surviving.
An rts, where you're the losing side, and you're doing your darn best to retreat....escape........survive. Where every lives matters, and losses are felt later in the game.
All untill that one last stand, where with everything you managed to save throughout the game, you have to hold off the invaders, the terror, while your last hope at survival is being prepared, An ark, or a stargate? or something." :
If an ark, you could have something throughtout the story like side quests where you'd need to scavange from the invader's rare wrecks to obtain pieces of their technology, wich would affact the end game's ark and ending (like how far can the ark reach, how many people it can carry, how resistant/adaptable it can be).
But off course the trade off would be wether you can obtain those without sacrificing too many ressources and lives wich would influence your survavibility at the end.
If a stargate/gate of some sort, you would have to hold out as long as possible to let the gate charge, the scientist find a safe destination, sabotaging to be prepared, and people to evacuate.
Maybe throughtout the story you would have the possibility to hold out/investigate observatories and stuff wich contain important datas to help find a much safer/compatible destination, once again it would come to a price.
All that would offer a few different endings, wich could be used in a second game, where you'd play as the survivors, wich depending on your results in the first game, would have more choices in where they go among a set of places (wich arn't necessarily friendly/100% safe).
How many people you start with, how much technologies and ressources. And even how many of the survivors are craftmens, soldiers, scholars/scientist... and leaders....
Here depending on choices you'd have made throughtout the first story, like wich path in your retreat you took, wether you chose to save your mens' lives at the price of a settlement asking for assist during their retreat. And even at the very end...wether you choose to hold until the bitter end, or when you felt that the line was starting to crumble, you'd choose your mens' lives and retreat amongst the civilians.
Maybe if you saved up enought throughout the story you could send the less experienced, youngest recruits, along some veterans ahead while you hold the line with what remain. You'd have choices imposed on you, like your troops making reclamations, or stuff.
All that would make for many differnent starting lines, harder or easier on a default setting (like how many survivors even escaped to begin with) But even if it's "easier" it could still be fairly hard depending on where you landed, and what kind of population and ressources you managed to save. If you don't have enought soldier, defending yourself might be harder, if not enought craftmens rebuilding might be slower etc etc and of course in the end, no "path" would necessarilly be better, you couldn't have a "meta" where you save all soldiers and scientist and go blazing and shootin' or go fully balanced and materialist, saving a neccessary ammount of each categories.
Oh and throught out the story, you could also have random events, like a country or people trying to surrender, or sabotaging your retreat or stuff. The game could also be on a grand scale of a space empire retreating toward it's core world, but i'd preffer for it to be on a single world, maybe starting from a moon tho? as the first line of defense and then retreating down to earth, and the final stronghold would be a fortress inside the tallest mountain, offering therefore a natural defense even against air. Maybe with a shield to protect against orbital strikes, or maybe the invaders just don't have that level of technology *yet*.
Then in the second game, it would be about rebuilding, but first you'd have to survive yet again, perhaps facing off against a local civilization, putting you in the role of the invaders this time, for even more darkness~ Albeit you would once more be faced with many choices as to wether you try to co-exist, exterminate, assimilate... With the ultimate goal being...preparing for the impending doom of thoses who chased you out of your home... Wich once more may come sooner or later depending on your results.
And this would all give a fair bit of replayability for both games. Of course, for the second game you could also play with preset set ups if you don't want to play the first game, but they wouldn't be as advantagious/disavantagious/personallized (albeit there could be a hard difficulty where you'd have more disavantagious, semi-randomized set ups, but no easy mode, as that would defeat the interest of the double game's back and forth, and be damned all the lazy fuckers! xD).
So yeah, here you have it, you're welcome for the long read, wether you liked it or hated it~~

It would be a niche, but If a motivated studio, with the funds for it, would put it's heart into it regardless of how many people will love it. Just like death stranding. It was a gamble and a niche, i loved it, some people did, but not everyone. But i'm sure kojima would do it again if he had a redo.
