- How to become a Merchant Mariner in 2021 ? What all do you need to get started ? Well In this video I break down the steps to getting started in the Merchant Marine Industry, & also 3 different type of ways you can get into the industry. Over the passed 2 weeks people have been asking me the same questions on how to get started , which way is the faster route, so I put it all in a video & broke it down . Bruh all you need is a Passport mmc book medical card & Twic & you can apply yo ANY Company for entry level that’s hiring such as MSC
If you get into the Msc they pay for your schooling

Got my Merchant Mariners Credentials earlier this year and started working! It’s been an absolute blast. I’m working for Edison Chouest Offshore. Been working on Tugs. Im hoping to one day work for companies like Crowley or OSG when I’ve gotten enough experience and training. A Sailors life is the best life!

@@yamomsahoe2430 you don’t need the fucking academy to join the Merchant Marine. Fuck that. Just get your TWIC, Passport, MMC and Medical Certificate and start job hunting. You’ll be starting from the bottom sure. But you’ll be out there working and making money. No fuck that.

This Video is informative. I am going through a program currently and nearing the end. I have my passport, first aid,cpr,aed. I had this already prior to program due to medical field experience. I am pending application for Twic and will be having a meeting with the Union President Trade School.

@@chestercheeto9768 You have to have your Twic prior. I have a medical exemption via Covid vaccine which is a requirement so my Mariner Goals are experiencing a delay. The Ships all require vaccination.I wish you the best on your Goals...

Sup bro, just had two questions though. You said the SIU apprenticeship takes 6 to 8 months and then another year on top of that to start earning real money. So basically then you gotta plan for 1.5 to 2 years before the money kick in? or did the one year of not earning "real money" include the 6-8 months? ...
and when you graduate the whole apprenticeship do you start as an OS? How long to get to AB?

Question. I have been working on yachts and commercial fishing vessels in Alaska, Florida, and the Bahamas for about a decade now. I have sea time, stcw, a 100 ton captains license and some other endorsements ….. will this elevate me coming in “off the streets” to this industry. Looking to go deck department then to the wheel house

At piney point, which is the program Tre went to, his information is correct if you go to the Deck Department. They just changed the program for Stewart Department. You will start making legit money ($6,000/month) during 2nd phase. Which is right after your 15 weeks. A lot of people in my class switched from Deck to Stewart just to get paid and be done with the program faster. There is no 3rd-5th phase for Stewart Department anymore. Piney point is also still not taking students for the engine department right now.

@@christiancoleman5452 I also wanted to do the engine department. But I switched to Deck. Then when I got to Piney Point was told about the changes, I switched to Stewart. Lol there’s no information about when they will start to accept anyone for the engine department yet. Probably won’t be for a while

Would you reccomend going to an academy if we're younger? I'm very eh on college and that environment, but I've been extremely interested in becoming a sailor. Iirc going through an academy opens up to better paying jobs, right?

How easy is it to rejoin the seafarers union if you left the industry, say for a year or two to pursue another opportunity? For example, would you be able to stay in the union if you keep paying your dues or have to take any refresher training upon returning? Thanks!

I really appreciate your videos bro. As a person of color, it's dope seeing another face in the industry! I'm curious about the field and just have a few questions to ask and I hope this is the right place to do so:
1. When you come home, what is your lifestyle like? (do you go out a lot, see friends/family, have time to enjoy yourself)
2. Is it best to rent or own a home near major ports?
3. Outside of work, are you normally close with friends and family/have a decent social support group? (or are you more of a loner?)
4. Is it possible to spend less than 6 months at sea and still make enough money to pay rent and live decently?
5. Do you plan on making a career out of it? (If so, what opportunities for growth are there?)
6. If you don't plan on being in the field for the rest of your life, what are some jobs or careers that you can transition to?
I know you're busy and probably don't have the best internet access, but whenever you get the time, I'd love to hear your answers to some of those questions! I respect the grind bro, and keep up the great work on the channel!

Looking to get on as merchant marines ordinary seaman. Retired vet 22 years. Got the run around the first time applying back in 2015. My card expired since then but when i recently contacted, was told i qualified for ordinary seaman. In your opinion, how good are my chances?

Do you get any benefits when you sail with the union hall as a c card? I have most of my credential I just have to finish up my stcw class and then I will be able to sail with the union hall
What are the minimums to sail as a class C and how do you get from C to B? I thought about going to the SIU program but I know I would want the engine dept as I turned wrenches for a few years for the Army and the Air Force.

Your and other's videos have been extremely helpful. Filling out the MMC App was a piece of cake. I have received my MEDICAL CERT after about a month. I am waiting on MMC Book ACTUAL in my hand. So far... One month and TEN days waiting and it is killing me because I want to get out there.
Two Unions said they would hire me on the SPOT with one shipping out time would be less than a week and SIU might be longer.
SO.
Medical Card in hand and MMC APPLICATION ACCEPTED (maybe past PQEB).
Passport Book and Card took 6 months during HIGH COVID.
TWIC was three weeks toward the end of the COVID mess.

@@Beastdriving I have all my Docs and now I am waiting on the CG to put endorsements on them. Sailors Union of the Pacific and SEIU Seafarers plus the Marine Wipers and QMED Union (forgot the abbrevation letters for them).

I was able to get my Twic card and my passport before everything else. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING you have to get into a Marine Academy, SIU or a Trade School (8-whatever many months program) to get your MMC. Then you find jobs to apply for or if you went to the Academy (most expensive and time consuming route) you'll be given a job? SIU FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN TOLD starts you at the very bottom but I IS free from WHAT I'VE READ and HEAR in this video. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. The basic question is "Do I need to get the TWIC card before, during, or after training?" in which case, again, you will need that but you can get it WAY before you do any type of training.

Still don’t understand if I need to find a school or an unlicensed union before getting an mmc, how am I suppose to get the mmc if I need training but how do I get training without the mmc
No prob. You apply for the MMC in what you want to enter into ENTRY LEVEL. That would be Wiper, Steward, or Ordinary Seaman. The Unlicensed Ratings. While doing this at the same time I would contact Union Halls and Employers to find out what their MINIMUM Standards are for STCW and what jobs are hot at the moment to break into them. Some Unions/Employer requirements are more than others. Coastal States with Ports will have several STCW type schools in them. Most give the basic classes once a month at each school. Think on saving up at least $2K for the school and living expenses for a week if you live away from them. AirB&B or extended stay hotels are your friends here.
Passport, TWIC, Talk to the Union, Apply for your MMC, get into the minimum required Classes, sign on to a company or Union... You are in like Flynn!
Apply as soon as possible because the Coast Guard is S-L-O-W-W-W-W-W-W!

What exactly do you put on forms as far as endorsements the schools website doesn’t really explain it well for the medical and the application I get wiper but do you just put the stcws on the medical form K after because you wouldn’t have them yet applying for the school so you shouldn’t put them on and do I check the box that says Stcw even if I don’t have it yet on the application B form so confusing

You can … it isn’t the easiest route but it’s possible for sure
I took the route of getting my credentials alone and from a school. I didn’t go to Piney Point. In my opinion. the easiest route is doing it alone. Piney Point was wanting too much for a lot of stress. It’s only worth it because it’s through the union.
RCM Maritime in Charleston, South Carolina is the one I went to. $750.00 for a STCW basic class there. I got all mine and my TWIC so I'm just waiting on all the paperwork to process.
