A large problem I saw in Trader Joe's products is they will substitute ube with spirulina and it doesn't respond the same way in cooking and isn't a good flavor match! I have heard-but haven't confirmed for myself yet- they've also used Japanese purple sweet potato instead of ube, which also yields a different flavor and reacts differently than ube. My friend has more access to Trader Joe's "ube" products and I've sent her real ube (read: pinoy/Filipino) products to compare and the Japanese purple sweet potato and this is mainly on her take.
This is sort of disappointing because for many Non Asian Americans this will be their only exposure to Ube and they will have no idea this is nothing like ube at all. We tried this and it really upset my daughter because she had her mouth ready for ube and didn't receive it. It actually sent my Mother in law to the Asian market in some sort of trance to fix the inaccuracy by making 3 versions of ube jam. One was pretty thin, but she used Sweetened condensed milk not coconut milk to preserve the Ube flavor. I guess it wasnt a waste of money, it gave us 3 straight days of Ube food because it offended our Pinoy home.
The ube ice cream from Trader Joe’s also has like. A coffee type flavor? Idk it’s weird, I’ll definitely stick to just forking out the like $13 for a gallon of Magnolia brand ube ice cream 😅

Honestly I'm not surprised. Because ube is such a delicate and mild flavour in general and really specific to the Philippines, I'm really doubtful if a large chain store can either replicate or source it well. When I went to Seattle a couple weeks ago I was able to pick up a couple boxes of the ube mochi pancakes (I'm from Canada, we don't have TJ's), kind of had that expectation going in especially with people saying it tastes more like coconut but they were still really yummy overall! If you made your own with real ube I'm sure that they'd taste even stronger.

Idk where in Canada you are, but I've seen actual ube products from the Philippines in various Asian supermarkets in Toronto, as well as ube itself. I've heard it can also be bought from Whole Foods and Real Canadian Superstore, but we never shopped much in those places, so Idk

Though I did visit Toronto last year and a friend took us to Seafood City in Scarborough, we don't really have a Filipino store that's to that scale in size so it was pretty neat!
I had a few ube things in Hawaii. Still don’t know what it tastes like. I don’t doubt they were authentic, so I’m concerned that there just isn’t enough flavor in Ube to honestly rave about.
After watching your videos, so many times with the Uba may I suggest to you that you make your own syrup and some of the things you make and put them on the market for others to enjoy not just to market? Many Americans would enjoy your creation instead of making their own, especially when it’s hard to get a hold of in some places. I just bought this yesterday and thought the same thing. So I made ube pancakes and added ube extract to this jam for an added darker color. Still tasted like syrup but looked more authentic and on top of the ube pancakes it worked ok :)

I have this spread and while no, it's not true ube jam, it helps to refrigerate it to at least save the texture. When it's cold it's much easier to spread and I think of it more as a vanilla-y, vconutty buttery spread than a true ube spread. I still like it!
I haven't opened up the jar yet. I've been trying a lot of trader joes ube things. The flavor of most of the ube food has a lot of coconut. Which I'm fine with I always try to combine coconut and Ube because it really helps bring out the flavor. But the Trader Joe's ube has too much of a coconut flavor. The waffle pancake mix is delicious but has a strong coconut flavor. So i added more ube extract to make the flavor come out more and to make it more purple. I've had the Ube pretzels the ube tea cookies the ube pancake waffle mix and they all taste heavily of coconut. I think as for someone who plays with Ube flavors a lot. Its in the right direction. But they need to use less coconut flavors and truly bring out the ube. Give the customers a more unique less sweet flavor of ube. Of course the ube treats are popular at trader joes but the customers need more of a unique experience of ube

A *hint* of ube, but not what I was hoping for. Gonna have to look for proper ube jam next time I'm at the local markets.
This looks tasty! but for those who don't want to spend alot or simply don't have a TJ's near them: try looking at any Asian or Caribbean grocery store. They usually have ube paste which will be a bit thicker because it's potato paste but its usually cheaper. If you want something of the above consistency, mix it with coconut cream. If you mix a jar of ube paste and a can of cream of coconut you'll get about two jars of this for the same price as the above product and with no added sugars and dyes and other junk. ^.^

The demand for Ube in the Philippines is not very high. Filipinos only want it when they are abroad. Because Ube is not abundant. They have Ube in Bohol island and the nearby islands alao have Ube jams in their culture.

Every time I make ube halaya it takes me hours of mixing to cook it It's a big commitment to make it 😂

Best Ube Jam is from Mountain Maid (Good Sheperd) in Baguio -IMO. Otherwise just make your own halaya. I hope Trader Joes revises their version of Ube Jam just cause the wider public should not confuse ube flavor with straight sugar.
They do that a lot with “foreign flavors” they put in a little so they can technically say that’s what it is and then they just absolutely drench it in something more “palatable” It’s so people can feel like they’re being adventurous without actually being challenged by something new
Because of ur posts I got myself a pastilla de leche (ube flavor), it was sooo good!!! Had to order it in but it was worth it. My siblings and parents also loved it

I also bought this product out of curiosity! I agree with you that calling it an Ube Spread is misleading, but it is a decent product to use as a kaya substitute in kaya toast. Especially if you're in a rush, or if you're feeling lazy and don't feel like making real kaya spread. It won't have the normal pandan flavors that kaya has, but the coconut jam part of kaya is overwhelmingly present! Additionally, when this product is stored cold, it can spread thicker over fresh toast.
the consistency reminds me of kaya a coconut based pandan jam where I'm from when you said it tasted like coconut I'm guessing it's made using a coconut base similar to kaya

The pancakes from the same line of Ube stuff taste like coconut, too. I put protein powder in mine which changes the texture, but I think they're likely REALLY sweet when made per the box recipe.
I was fortunate to be introduced to Ube before I started working at Trader Joe's. When I first tried the ube products I couldn't have been more disappointed. I thought it tasted like coconut and movie theater popcorn.
I'd rather have coconut cream than harm others, besides that the best they can do is probably cashew cream but that'd probably be more expensive. Or almond milk. Vegan ice cream made with coconut milk still tastes pretty good & doesn't have a coconut flavor so I guess it depends on how it's made.
My first introduction to ube was at an ice cream shop in Oakland that my dad and lil sister used to always go to! I can’t even remember the name, but it was very small. When I was 8, they got the ube flavor and after I tried it, I fell in love ❤ my dad and mom taught me to research and respect other cultures, so I started looking into other forms of the purple potato. IMO, this jam doesn’t look good at all 😂😅 all they had to do was some more research 😅

I recently tried this kind because it was the ONLY Ube I could find in my 🇺🇸 town (i planned on baking a cake with it)...i was surprised by the amount of coconut oil and strained it. Even after straining, the coconut flavor was very strong. I don't know exactly what Ube should taste like, but I was disappointed I didn't experience it properly 😅

Especially if you're in a rush, or if you're feeling lazy and don't feel like making real kaya spread. It won't have the normal pandan flavors that kaya has, but the coconut jam part of kaya is overwhelmingly present! Additionally, when this product is stored cold, it can spread thicker over fresh toast.

Trader Joe's ube stuff (to me) was very sweet
instantly reminded me of the purple stuff that came out of that one thing in a power rangers movie 🤣 someone please tell me they remember as well
the consistency reminds me of kaya a coconut based pandan jam where I'm from when you said it tasted like coconut I'm guessing it's made using a coconut base similar to kaya
ube jam is also kinda scarce here in manila, most of the time we can have it when we go to Baguio.

The pancakes from the same line of Ube stuff taste like coconut, too. I put protein powder in mine which changes the texture, but I think they're likely REALLY sweet when made per the box recipe.

I was fortunate to be introduced to Ube before I started working at Trader Joe's. When I first tried the ube products I couldn't have been more disappointed. I thought it tasted like coconut and movie theater popcorn.
Omgg jellyfish jelly! My childhood dream is to eat Jellyfish jelly, Harry Potter's birthday cake and Teletubbies pink liquid food.
I'd rather have coconut cream than harm others, besides that the best they can do is probably cashew cream but that'd probably be more expensive. Or almond milk. Vegan ice cream made with coconut milk still tastes pretty good & doesn't have a coconut flavor so I guess it depends on how it's made.
Their ice cream is apparently really good. My cousin and brother have both said it has good ube flavor.

My first introduction to ube was at an ice cream shop in Oakland that my dad and lil sister used to always go to! I can’t even remember the name, but it was very small. When I was 8, they got the ube flavor and after I tried it, I fell in love ❤ my dad and mom taught me to research and respect other cultures, so I started looking into other forms of the purple potato. IMO, this jam doesn’t look good at all 😂😅 all they had to do was some more research 😅

The first person to come up with a chain of Filipino food spots is going to be a billionaire. It is a huge market with world-class cuisine and nobody has successfully done it. I seriously think it could be what Japanese sushi was during the 1980s
I recently tried this kind because it was the ONLY Ube I could find in my 🇺🇸 town (i planned on baking a cake with it)...i was surprised by the amount of coconut oil and strained it. Even after straining, the coconut flavor was very strong. I don't know exactly what Ube should taste like, but I was disappointed I didn't experience it properly 😅

I'm fortunate to have had exposure to proper Ube flavor (no Filipino markets, but we do have a local Asian market) As I've gotten older, I've come to rather dislike how overly sweet so many processed foods are here.

I don't know why but I've been seeing a lot of Ube products in stores recently. Or at least in some of the major chain stores like at my previous workplace SPROUTS.
Ngl I'd love to try real ube jam but that does look like a fun-colored coconut topping for pancakes, might honestly look into getting that just for that 😂
