Got my hands on one in elmax Rob. Sharpened it and its razor sharpe. Really nice steel. And it strikes a ferro rod really well. Probably the same as the f1x in Elmax. Only thing is the narrow grip with my large hands.
I know mate, they really fail with their small handles, I was told that the reason for the small heavily textured handles are for being better in gloved hands as they are knives meant for cold climates, I don't agree with this and I think they should make thicker grips.
An excellent and unbiased review. I just bought one of these, after watching several reviews including a longer version of this one. I agree with all the points made here. IMO the key Pro: like the steel choice, size of blade ok for general stuff but might want longer blade if out in the woods more than one or two days (or make sure have hatchet). Con: the handle is too thin, and i don't have overly large hands. The sheath is, well, functional i suppose, but not loving it. To be honest for the same money probably would have bought something else. Say a bark river bravo in some good stain resistant steel, with micarta handles and nice sheath. Anyhow, excellent review again, appreciate your content
I hadn't realised that I'd actually re-edited this video a while ago but seeing as I put the effort in I thought I'd let it run. I've only just found out that I can download my own videos for a little facelift!
I see what you mean, not great but for me ok and true about the cowry x. It took me a long time to get one but the sheath is exactly the same as the nl5 in vg 10 w or cos. They could have tried a bit better for such an expensive knive.
Really like the F1X Elmax but the only thing worse than the slim handles (don't know many Swedish people with small hands), on Fallkniven's is the absolute crap sheaths especially for the price (even the leather ones.... you know what I mean). What this shows is that if you want a bushcraft knife then the only way to go is a Rob Evans, only question is MK tribute or bushtool or both....... (both obviously). Great to see the old camp. 👍👍
I wonder what is so bad about the sheaths. The new zytel ones are locking the knife really well and they look a lot better than the old ones. Furthermore they are indestructible, impact proof in cold weather. I have several different leather ones. All sturdy and well made of thick leather. So what us so bad about them I wonder ?
The leather ones are made from thick leather but lack finesse this is even the case with the Idun Cowry X Damascus which is not a cheap knife (it is a slab of a sheath). The older synthetic sheaths are terrible but I put this down to my preference for hand made leather sheaths.
Always a joy to revisit Wobbly & Old Faithful, in a really nice place, where a lot of great videos were once made. Scott has been a bit quiet these days. Hope he's doing well
@@roasted_cheese either works well, the handle on the Scout is a little short for prolonged use but that's usually carving spoons etc which they are both not really suitable for anyway, get a mora carving knife for that , they are cheap and work really well.
Got my first Fällknivens recently; F1 in the new VG Wolf steel, F1X in Laminated CoS and the F1 Pro in Elmax. Beautifully made knives but I have to agree with you on the sheaths; very disappointing! I prefer the handle of the Pro to the F1X, feels like it’s going to give hot spots galore, too early to comment on any of the steels. As a knife maker, have you made or sold any scales for the F1X yet?
Where I close to spending that kind of money on a Knife ( I wish ) I would instead cough of the Extra a get me a really nice and exclusive handmade proper bush knife from that upcoming handsome youth, what's his name, oh yes, Rob Evans. 😜
@@RobEvansWoodsman never, wouldn't have thought you were a day over 30. Did I mention, Dashing. It's not the drink talking, I am off it for lent. Good luck.
So I understood. I prefer the x series too but I still think the pro is better than your rating. It’s a matter of preference I guess. But the fire steel test was surprisingly bad!
For me they are ridiculously over priced for a manufactured knife, your paying for the brand, considering the price you charge for a hand made knife that will probably out preform most of these type of knives, and a lot more work and effort put in to making. Can't justify paying Falkniven money, Just my opinion.
How do you figure hand made knife would out perform a machine made knife made to exact measurements? Also, it’s not like a hand made knife is made with some magical metal or some magical heat treatment like they try to have you believe. Any hand made knife I have bought is never as accurately made as a machine produced knife.
@@timb8970 No matter what you say, there well over priced in my opinion, when a knife is hand made you are paying for the man hours put into making it, I mentioned nothing about magical metal, nor did I say they weren't decent knives, just well over priced for me. Each to their own , if you don't mind paying for this type of knife I'm happy for you, I'm sure it will work great, but no better than a knife half its price I'm sure.
@@TheDavewattsyes they are a bit expensive, that is true but you have to remember that most of those knives are made in workshops in Japan where skilled people make convex edges on it, mostly by hand as I have been told then they have to be shipped to Sweden for the finishing touches. So a lot of overhead expences and wages to pay, Take Trc for instance, love their knives and finishing quality and materials and also very expensive and they don’t even make convex besides a few knives for DBK as this is to labor intensive, therefore way to expensive. So I agree they could be a bit cheaper but there is a lot of cost involved as well in the way the knives are being produced.
@nicolaasvoois2311 I respect your opinion but I won't change mine, your still paying for the name end of, I'm not saying that they aren't good knives, but not something I would be interested in paying for, not when I have paid £6 for a knife 12 years ago that still going strong and has been used heavily in work and in the woods. I do own more expensive knives but I wouldn't be splashing out daft money for something that does the same job as something at a fraction of the price.
I totally understand as I have a few mora’s myself which I use for just about anything without being careful. But the weak spot my wife has for shoes and bags, I have for knives 😂 the only thing I don’t have is a real good nice knife with a scandi grind. That’s why I ordered one with Rob.
