I just wanna respect how Tamron goes for consistent filter thread. That's such a massive advantage if you want to get high quality filters while avoiding the giant brackets to hold the rectangle filter slabs. Something I really would hope other manufacturers pick up too
Nothing that an step up filter wouldn't solve. Tamron lenses look ugly with this filter size except for those whose front element is big enough to fill the diameter. I know that how a lens looks plays no role in taking photos, but I'm all for compactness in lenses whenever possible, .
I bought this lens for wedding videos, the wider 20mm end solves the limitations I had with Tamron 28-70 (many times I wish it was wider) and 40mm is tele enough for me. The size and weight reduction is a bonus, especially on a ghimbal.
My present lenses are 20mm 24mm 35mm and 50mm. So just short of the 50mm but I still think I can get it to work. Im waiting for Sony to put the tilt/swivel lens on a A7C II, that would be a near perfect combo for me
Kudos to Tamron for innovating like this, a lightweight, relatively fast, wide zoom. The promise of compact mirrorless fullframe gear finally seems to be fulfilled by more manufacturers (Sigma i-series comes to mind as well). Panasonic sort of started the trend with their kit 20-60mm, but this Tamron is of course a bit faster. Would love this for street and architecture.
I completely agree, this lense is small and light and if it's mounted on a light APS-C body this becomes almost invisible a package. But you still have the benefit of a really usable zoom range. I might get this myself for Christmas.
I'm getting this for interviews and event work . A7 IV has 1.5 crop at 4k 60 so the 20mm becomes 30mm which is just wide enough for gimbal and hand held. The small size and light weight also helps for gimbal. Good travel lens too.
tamron is slowly taking over my kit. 20-40, 28-75. the only lens i will not be replacing is my 70-200 gmii. But tamron and sigma are dominating the standard zooms i like
I know, right? It's like you have the amazing sigma prime lenses on an APS-C camera, but now on a Full frame camera and all in one! - well, "almost"... Amazing price/quality.
this just complements the Tamron 35-150 2 - 2.8 nicely. Corner Sharpness at 40 mm doesn't matter so much then - the bigger lense is pretty much perfect at every focal length. This one is for webcam functionality and vlogging as well. I really like the idea of the two. Would definitely get the duo if I were a Sony user. OR IF TAMRON MADE THEM AVAILABLE FOR NIKON!
Yeah, I'm waiting for some more serious lens from Tamron for the Nikon Z than the 70-300. But then I have the ETZ adapter that I use with Tamron 28-200, but I don't want to buy new Sony E lenses.
@@quikee9195 I had the current version of the etz-adapter as well. I used it with a stabilized Sigma lens. Together they were trying to get my camera's IBIS to commit suicide. It hammered around in the body so hard that I could easily feel it on the outside. I decided to not use the ETZ anymore 😅
Always love your reviews. One discovery that I've made is that is makes fairly nice sunstars...maybe it's just my copy, I don't know. And I like the coverage of the lens. In most cases 20mm is wide enough, it also covers the prime 35mm distance, and if cropped in just a bit, can even cover the 50mm distance fairly well. But to me, the biggest factor is the size and versatility. I have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 which is a really nice lens, but I like the Tamron for travel when I want to draw less attention to myself. So I will travel with the 20-40 lens and the Sigma 90mm (I series lens), so a very small and compact kit.
I like 20 to 40mm. I often use primes with this focale length for landscape photography. For example the Voigtlander Noktons 20mm 1.4 and 40mm 1.2. But sometimes changing lenses is a problem. So this lease could be a nice option for landscape photographers. But at night I would use the Sony 20mm 1.8. Great lens for nighttime landscapes and Astro.
In my opinion what a game changer lens, what a range in f2.8 constant with so tiny and light size... my god, I love it, I wish we could have it for Nikon.
Thank you CF for another great video. I had high expectations for this lens. I have an evaluation copy coming in today. I suspect, it is better than my 17-28 in sharpness and contrast. If so, it is a keeper as I am happy with the way the 17-28 performs throughout the range between f5.6 and f11. 17-28 is perfectly acceptable at f2.8 too but you hardly shoot landscapes at f 2.8 anyway. I have seen other reviews of the 20-40 and they seem to show better results both on the studio charts and actual photos from the field. Perhaps sample variation? Will be able to see first hand today or tomorrow.
Thanks for another great review. I think its perfect compromise for a travel lens. Its also a great pairing with my 35-150mm Tamron for doing weddings.
Focal range might look strange but still quite good and useful. 20mm should be wide enough for probably 95% of people shooting landscape and architecture, for indoor shots or some other super heavy wide shots you might find it limiting, but then it's quite more specific situation and you might actually need tilt-sift lens anyway. Range is good also for vlogging, talking head videos and at 40mm will be great for some street photography (of course still this is personal preference), maybe even suitable for some portraits, and you are actually getting into the territory of normal lens view. Personally I think that 20mm-40mm range is more useful than the more common 16-35mm, not to mention that this is times lighter than any 16-35mm f2.8 lens, making great for travel.
Thanks Christopher, I have this lens on order -should be ready to ship in late January. The price here in Ontario, Canada is $1029 (CAD) plus 13% tax. I am buying this as a "replacement" for my Tamron17-28 lens that I find too limiting on the tele end to shoot with. I am hoping that paired with my Tamron 28-200, it make for a nice lightweight two lens travel kit along with my a7c. I might throw in a small fast prime ( the 35 or 55 f1.8?) for low light. This is a focal range and compact size that I would have wished for if I had being designing a perfect walkaround lens! I so appreciate this positive review!
Happy days! My lens shipped early and I received it two days ago -the bonus is there has been a price drop here in Canada and the lens is currently selling for $949.00 CAD + tax. I haven't had a chance to really take the lens out on the street yet but I can see that this will be a nice pairing with my 28-200 with a sufficient overlap to avoid changing lenses more than necessary Looking forward to travelling light with this duo! Should easily be able to fit everything into my Peak Design 6l sling.
I'm very tempted by this. I've been looking for a good wide to standard angle zoom for my gimble work. I thought I was going to have to grab a 24-105 or 16-35f4, but this is an extremely tempting option.
Nice video as usual, Chris. Now, please go borrow an MFT camera and test the new Laowa 6mm f/2 Zero-D MFT. That looks like a very interesting optic. Besides, you've got to be running out of ideas for new lens tests soon. Micro four-thirds offers entirely new expansive and fertile ground for the experienced lens reviewer. Just an idea. 🙂OH, and Merry Christmas.
Reminds me of the Pentax 20-40mm f/2.8-4 Limited. But that's for APS-C only. And it's slower. That lens, though, is all about the user experience, with its zoom ring reminiscent of an old Takumar, its focus distance scale with DOF markings, and its all-metal build. That's what all the Limiteds are about (apart from being small as well). The zoom range might seem weird, but combine it with the 15mm f/4 and 70mm f/2.4 Limiteds, and you have a very neat, very small, high quality setup.
To be honest, this lens is fairly useful for new full frame sony buyers. They can skip the tamron 17-28 and tha 28-75 f2.8 if they're on a budget. At the wide end, 20mm is fair enough for most cases and at a telephoto, who needs anything beyond 40 if you already have a 50mm F1.8 or 85 F1.8 prime for portraits? Very useful lens for budget wedding as well as event photographers, though one thing to keep in mind, they'll also need to pair it with a good portrait lens.
Or pair it with the 35-150mm f2-2.8, which would be my preferred combo. I just wished the 20-40mm would perform a bit better in the corners starting from f4.
2x zoom like this would be great as a F2 version. However I still see this lens as useful for those who want small size and would prefer reaching 35mm lens area rather an 24 or 28 of the other small wide angle zooms lenses.
F2 version won’t keep the size this small, with the a7 iv or higher camera body, it can also be benefited by the apsc crop which increase the zoom range to 60mm, it’s really a good lens
I was honestly hoping for better performance, especially in the wide angle, which is what you buy this lens for. But on a less demanding sensor it could actually perform pretty well. I could see people using it on a a7c as a compact travel kit.
@@andreasbuder4417 not as sharp as other lenses that go even wider. But as I said, on a 24mp sensor it might be absolutely fine. Just something you can't recommend to every camera
Hi, If I used the Sony 20-70mm F4 lens for similar use as this (up to 40mm maybe 50mm), which one would you prefer? For outdoor and vehicle photography. Many thanks to anyone who helps me out. I love photography but I'm not great with all this stuff
I feel its best focal length, anything below 20mm is toooo wide to my linking, and ability to zoom till 40mm with f2.8 and still weighing ard 350gms is something must buy .
I'm old enough to remember when 28mm were considered super-wideangle and 24mm was almost unheard of. It took Leica until the 90s to develop a 24mm of their own, previous to that they bought in Minolta's 24mm. I tried a 15mm once but that was almost tiresome for most viewers to watch the extreme images.
I've actually been doing a bit of photography of buildings at 20mm. But I also sometimes want to do a detail shot of a window or a doorway or something and this lens would be extremely helpful as I'd not need to change lenses to do it.
when this lenses comes to a Z mount it will be a reason to buy a mirrorles Nikon! Love the range and could have it has my main lense (plus a 1 more zoom) and be very happy! Thank you for the video!
what nd filter size should i get for the tamron 20-40? i've watched other videos and they said 67ring size creates vignetting. should i get 72 or 77 instead?
really interesting Lens, sad that its corner sharpness leaves much to desire :/ I would like to have a 20-40 lens, but the only others that comes near to it are the zeiss 16-35 F4 and the G Master F2.8 which are twice/ triple the price of the Tamron.
Pentax makes a 20-40 f2.8-4 for their cameras that is even more compact. I came here hoping you would show off more of the zoom range. Might be too short.
it might be my next lens, to photograph AirBNBs. i have been using tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 and the 35mm side inst wide enough for some rooms i had to photograph
I wish Sony made a similar lens instead of the 24-50 as I would have preferred the wider 20mm. I prefer using native lenses as they work the best. That's the only reason I wouldn't get this one.
Definitely meant as a vlogging lens. Corner sharpness not hugely important, 20mm perfect for vlogging, 2.8 and 2x zoom with good reach at 40mm yet very compact. Definitely a vlogging favorite.
Under 20 photo have more deformation anyway. It is ok for landscape at 17 but not for people groups. It can be use for a dramatic effect on one person but i rarely use my 17mm. So 20-40 f2.8 would be good for photo and video. I am just a beginner/intermediate but i have tamron 17-28 and i am very happy with it. I use it most of the time in the 20-28 range and few architecture photo at 17mm. I think having 35 and 40 is good too.
It’s a tad more than £600 here in the UK, unfortunately! At nearly £900 it’s ridiculously over priced so I have ordered grey, which I don’t like doing but I’m not paying full UK price for it.
Extend the zoom just a lil bit more to 50mm and this would be my perfect zoom. I could replace all my primes with it I get a bonus 20mm too. As is this is a very interesting lens and I'd really like to see other manufactures do their take on it too because I don't shoot sony
Interesting. Does anyone. already have experience with the 20-40mm on a Nikon Z? I'm thinking of getting it and using a Megadap. Possibly the 14-30mm from Nikon is also better suited for this? Together with 50mm S and 85mm S, that could be a solid kit.
Hmm, seems like if you were an event photographer it would be great to have one camera with a 20-40 f2.8 on it and another with a 70-200 f2.8. The Holy Trinity can be replaced with the Mario Brothers.
Hmm, I think I'd pick the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 over this lens, especially since you can always crop your photos to zoom in further. But it's nice to have a lens like this as an option!
I don't shoot Sony ,so this and many other new products, aren't relevant. It certainly isn't a Wide angle choice, however I readily see the 20-40mm range being useful in city ( not street per se) and a general, light walking around lens.
A lens that ends at 40mm (which is only marginally better than 35mm) should start at 16, 15 or 14mm to be compelling even if we factor in a good f/2.8 apeture. There are plenty of 16-35mm lenses even at f/2.8. Also there are models that ends at equivalent 50mm, 60mm or 70mm starting at 20mm, as well as one starting at eq. 16mm that ends at 50mm. I really don't see the point with that lens it is very limiing in the zoom range and cannot compete with primes in light and optical quality.
For APC it is not going to beat the Sigma 18-50, for Full Frame it would be for folks who can't make up their minds between a 50mm f1.4 or a standard 28mm f2.0 or just choose a 35mm f1.4 for all
Seriously! Does testing af by switching between pepsi bottle and background makes any sense how camera af performs in real life? I see huge amount of focus breathing. What is this lens for? 20-40? Maybe for video? So, it would not fit at all because breathing compensation does not supports tamron… omg…

Definitely meant as a vlogging lens. Corner sharpness not hugely important, 20mm perfect for vlogging, 2.8 and 2x zoom with good reach at 40mm yet very compact. Definitely a vlogging favorite.
Cenarth falls ❤ my home town!
i was waiting for a comparison between Sigma 16-28 vs Tamrom 20-40
hmmm interesting. What about the 17-28mm f2.8 compared to this one?
If it was the £600 you said in the UK I’d buy one. Was this the planned price?
Actually it’s closer to £900 everywhere… not for me!!
this reminds me of my beloved Fuji 10-24. If I had a Sony I would definitely get this
Is it sharp enough for video on 40mm 2.8 in the corners?
Under 20 photo have more deformation anyway. It is ok for landscape at 17 but not for people groups. It can be use for a dramatic effect on one person but i rarely use my 17mm. So 20-40 f2.8 would be good for photo and video. I am just a beginner/intermediate but i have tamron 17-28 and i am very happy with it. I use it most of the time in the 20-28 range and few architecture photo at 17mm.
I think having 35 and 40 is good too.
when attached to a7c, is distortion correction working?
The bokeh looks nicer than the 28-75mm hoping that's the way it looks moving forward
This would be a great travel lens
Hey Christ what’s your favourite i.e. The King of Portrait lens, you said Sigma 105mm f/1.4 is the queen, so what’s the king?
Ooh, what an interesting focal range!
I feel like this range is good for real estate photography or for a desk-top vloging setup.
does anyone know how or where to get its lightroom profile corrections?
It’s a tad more than £600 here in the UK, unfortunately! At nearly £900 it’s ridiculously over priced so I have ordered grey, which I don’t like doing but I’m not paying full UK price for it.
Extend the zoom just a lil bit more to 50mm and this would be my perfect zoom. I could replace all my primes with it I get a bonus 20mm too. As is this is a very interesting lens and I'd really like to see other manufactures do their take on it too because I don't shoot sony
You might consider using crop mode for that.
A CF vid, it's a very good day!
No APS-C Test ?
Interesting. Does anyone. already have experience with the 20-40mm on a Nikon Z?
I'm thinking of getting it and using a Megadap. Possibly the 14-30mm from Nikon is also better suited for this?
Together with 50mm S and 85mm S, that could be a solid kit.
I would have grabbed in mid 2021 but its too late i have bought wonderful gms
This is the perfect travel lense for me! Hope to see is on F Mount. Any focal length under 21mm looks unnatural.
Perfect range when you have a two cam set up with a 35-150.
Has anyone tested this lens for real estate photography?
In UK it sadly costs £879 not £600
No LOCA test this time around?
WS but with this totally open USB port and external zoom
come on. the distortion ist not that bad at 20mm...... i don't have this lens, but maybe i will adapt it on my nikon ;)
It's like standing in the no-man's-land in tennis.
I don't shoot Sony ,so this and many other new products, aren't relevant.
It certainly isn't a Wide angle choice, however I readily see the 20-40mm range being useful in city ( not street per se) and a general, light walking around lens.
Looks like a FF walk and vlog to me...
I really don't see the point with that lens it is very limiing in the zoom range and cannot compete with primes in light and optical quality.
not first
항상 아쉬운 mm
For the love of god canon, please let 3rd parties make lenses
no point in this, get a 16-35
panasonic kit 20-60 is a much better range
The Lumix S 20-60 is a wonderful piece of equipment indeed.
No chromatic aberration testing. Very poor review
Quite good enough but I dont want to pay 900 dollars for this kind of sharpness. Its almost like sony kit lense
Yes, thank you for this!
first!
