I think you nailed it about the focus throw after 1m. I was trying to work out why I was having such a difficult time doing landscape shots with this lens, missing focus so often, despite all the focusing aids on my Fuji cameras. And you're right, it's that there's such a small range to use between 1m and infinity. Obviously it's marketed as a macro lens, so that's where it really shines. I have the 7artisans lens, but it looks to be exactly the same.
Damn. I searched for best budget macro lens and your video is the first that came up (that wasn't sponsored). You definitely delivered, my dude
I found that the my copy of the Laowa macro lens' sharpness was significantly worse nearing infinity focus than at the maximum macro magnification. I had a first edition 7artisans Macro, and the sharpness was much better for some reason when nearing infinity focus! I also enjoyed the rendition that the lens gave to the defocused background when taking photos of birds!
Just bought this lens for my a6000. Thank you so much!
Thanks for your excellent review! Could the use of hyperfocal helps when focusing beyond 1 meter?
I am about to buy a full frame camera for shooting jewelry photos. My budget is relatively tight at the moment, so I can only afford a macro lens. I was a little sad about it in the beginning, but your video changed it! Thank you very much!
Excellent video. I seem drawn to close focus / creamy bokeh type shots, and am considering this lens.
I use in dental photography, how is the distortion? many diferences from 100mm?
Any thoughts about how it compares with the TTArtisan 40mm f2.8 macro ?
Looking to get a macro lens for scanning my film negatives, is this a lens that would fit that use case and would it fit a Cannon SL2?
This is a great video. My wife is into photography and i know almost nothing. I would like to get her a macro lens for a present - is this a good one? We have a Canon T8i camera
Is there an autofocus lens that gives magnification 2:1?
Is it available for a Nikon DX Camera?
Can I use this on my m50 mark 2?
And this lens wouldn’t fit my Canon 90d. Could you please recommend one for my camera? Thank you
Which one is best 40mm or 60mm please suggest ❤️
Saludos gracias por compartir 🥺 es solo comparible con camaras cannon "sin espejo" y la mia es reflex
compatible for canon rebel t7?
Thanks!!
Honestly, there are so many vintage macro lenses that perform really well and can be easily adapted.
How do you mean
thanks for putting this lens on my radar!
I bought a TTArtisan 40mm f2.8 macro for well under $100. It's 1:1 macro, very sharp, and also works great for street photography on my M43 bodies. Metal body, metal mount, yet not too heavy.
Personally, I have found Meike lenses to be generally inferior to TTArtisan and 7Artisans.
@@hobogardenerben If you look around, you should be able to pick it up for about $70. Bargain!
What about the PERGEAR 60mm F2.8 MK2 2X?
Is FF (you can use it on APS-C too), a little bit cheaper and has 2x magnification.
I have that lens, the Brightin star version, but it's the same lens. I'm testing it now. I think they each have their advantages, if you need the 2x, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Pergear lens.
I am one of your newer subscribers from that video “Thank You and Goodbye” that the TH-cam algorithm gods recommended. I just have to say you are one of my new favorite content creators. ❤
Wow, so kind of you, thank you.
Some nice photos of Geelong in Melbourne mate 🇦🇺❤️
Is it compatible with canon m50
My go-to macro in this focal length is the Micro-Nikkor AF-D 60mm f2.8D. Adapted the slightly cheaper non-D version is optically identical. It’s great as a portrait lens, walk around, or macro of course. This lens is so good it’s the only lens other than the Leica 35mm f2 Summicron that I have two copies of.
Thanks for the tip!
My second best choice is a Zeiss but it’s pricey and a bit longer at 100mm 😎
@@markwiemels There is also the Voigtlander 65mm APO-Lanthar Macro but I haven’t tried it yet.
@@douggoodhill Such a shame about the Leica quality 🤣
Wondering if you have tried (or could review) the TTArtisan Macro, 40 mm f2.8 ? About $100
No, but I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Check out some well regarded and affordable full frame macro lenses, such as the Nikon Micro Nikkor 55/2.8 or 55/3.5 1:2 macro, Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 90/2.8 1:1, Vivitar 100/2.8 1:1. For much closer macro to cover full frame, check out a Kodak Cine 25/1.9 lens. It is mentioned in
Manual of Close-Up Photography by Lefkowitz, Lester.
Would you grab this lens over the Canon EF-M 28mm f3.5 IS STM Macro as your first macro lens on an EF-M mount?
28mm and 60mm are very different focal lengths. So it's a little hard to compare. Work out what focal length suits you.
That lens is not a third of the price of the Laowa, not even half price...
It is pre owned - but if getting pre owned I would buy from a reputable sight for camera gear and lenses 😬- I too think he should have said third or half the price pre owned though
Definitely going to get this one day!
It's hard to beat for the price.
Unfortunately there's no Canon EF (or EF-S) version of this lens.
Would this be a good pair with the zv-e10 for intro to macro?
for sure.
Im new! Does it work on Canon M50 and do I need a viltrox ef eos mount for it?
Yes, just buy the EF-M version. It's linked in the description.
I’ve got the laowa 90mm f2.8 2x macro full frame lens. At $450 it might seem expensive, but it’s incredibly sharp and an APO lens. I was very curious about the lens you’re reviewing only to be disappointed that it’s APSC.
both TTartisan and 7artisan have started making full frame lenses now
@@mysiph I love my 7artisans 50mm f1.05 and my Ttartisans 90mm f1.25. I’m very appreciative that these companies are making very affordable, high quality, L-mount, full frame lenses.
wow, budget macro lens with great capabilities
It's pretty hard to beat really.
could this be used for portraits/headshots? or does the 1 meter focus affect that
Yes, and the images are good, but nailing focus is fiddly.
Just stop it down and you'll get more leeway. Don't shoot wide open and aim for the eye, you'll need a really steady hand or be ready to get frustrated really fast
7Artisans has a 60mm f2.8 lens for $179. It has been out for a while now, can you please make a comparison to this one?
I will try to get one. Thanks for the suggestion.
Looks like is the same lens
@@liqm88 I think it is the same as the 7artisans V2 if the lens, not the original.
Does anyone know, can this lense be used on my Canon 750D (EF/EF-S) ? I'm quite new to photography :D
No, it's mirrorless only.
@@markwiemels Thank you for your feedback. Could you please suggest me an alternative lense, compatible with my camera ?
@@PandaPan773 you're best bet is probably a 3rd party lens like Tokina, Tamron or Sigma, and used. I'd personally recommend the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 lens though. I honestly wouldn't go shorter focal length than 100mm unless you like scaring off Insects & Arachnids...
I was interested in purchasing this lens but it’s not available in a Nikon F mount. That’s a shame. It’s even available for $20 off if you provide an email address. Disappointed-seems like it’s only available for mirrorless cameras.
Honestly: give a try to Nikkor Ai 55 macro and let us know!
Does it work for the Sony ZV-E10? :)
yes
For sony a6400?
@@reyesreyes2840 yes
Woah you were in Melbourne? I recognise those trams!
I live in Melbourne.
@@markwiemelsSome of your vlogs you walk by my old place there 😂
I don't see the point. Just get a 35mm prime macro full frame lens. On most systems, there is such lens for 300-500 USD. The 35mm glass translates to about the same focal length in crop model as this lens - plus you can use it as a standard 35mm prime, which is very versatile prime.
With this lens, you're paying extra for _not_ being able to shoot full-frame.
I wonder if you still get paid when the link pulls up the app instead of the website and people make the purchase.
I’m sure I don’t. For whatever reason these links seem to fail regularly. What country are you and what is coming up for you?
@@markwiemelsI'm in the U.S., I checked on two different androids(Samsung and Pixel), and it sent both of them to the macro lens in the Amazon app. Hopefully it still gives you the credit for clicking the link.
@@rays1548 ok, yes, now I understand. Good Question! I don't know the answer.
Aussies must be getting ripped off - near AUD $450 for the RF mount...no thank you. APS-C anyway, so vignetting on a FF body - I prefer to not use crop mode in camera.
PS doesn't say if the lens is 1:1 or 2:1 etc - I believe the Laowa is 2:1.
PPS the problem with using a 60mm macro lens is working distance - any Insect or Arachnid that's easily spooked will have long since taken off once you get close enough for 1:1 imaging, let alone 2:1...this is why 100mm macro lenses have long since been considered de rigueur.
It’s 1:1. When companies have those absurd prices, in Australia (where I live too), they just can’t be bothered to stock the lens on Amazon Australia, so they just put some stupid price, and if you pay it, they ship from Amazon USA. So they aren’t really trying to sell it here. EBay is sometimes a good place to check, often the prices are inline with the US prices I quote.
@@markwiemels Amazon Australia is a crapfest JOKE. Poor selection range ~10% of what Amazon US has, overpriced by like 200% vs Amazon US, never any stock...easier just to buy from Amazon US or eBay like you said...most local Aussie distributors and retailers engage in HEAVY price gouging though...and it didn't help that our federal government protected these bastards by introducing a GST on Internet purchased items (which it unlawfully enforces quite a fair bit).
can't fit EF! That's bullshait!
Unfortunately, almost no one is making new EF lenses, not even Canon.
@@markwiemels true, but still some brands make converters for new camera models to use older lens, but not for older camera to use new lens. I really want to try this... 😭
They send you the product for free, obviously you will be bias. It's human nature.
I don't believe that is the case, but this is why I disclose that the lens was free, so that you can make up you own mind. The truth is, I'm at a point in life, that you can't really influence my opinion by giving me a free camera lens. I have 100's of products that I get for free, and I don't make videos about them, because I can't recommend them.
