SchneidersLaden presents SUPERBOOTH19
What a fucking wizard - really cool to hear him talk about his process and approach. Saw Surgeon play in Brisbane (Australia) quite a few years ago now. A bunch of us fronted the cash for his flights and accomodation and he came to play one of Brisbane's shitty little clubs which is pretty awesome in itself, was a total face melter of a night.
Edit: In case people read this far, go find Surgeon's Glade Festival mix from 2006, it's a delight.
Travis Cleary That is epic!!!
What a show that was.
What a story, those are the gigs that artists truly remember. I had a friend doing something similar with blues artists across the US coming to play in his backyard. He had total legends coming through and they all loved the relaxed and intimate setting of his garden.
Would love to Surgeon play one of his live improv sets. I'm a regular traveller to Europe and the UK so hopefully the stars align soon.
I think that comment is more about the poster rather than Surgeons presentation
So let me tell you, you are so cool!!!
40:00 had the same experience playing Krautrock live, and it´s definitely because people like the unexpected, live factor; it feels more real, and when these moment happen where it all connects and a good track forms out of the impro, then the audience feels the magic of the moment, and is a part of it - much more than with a fixed set of rehearsed songs.
I only heard of this guy today. I really appreciate his philosophy of working with the machines and listening to what the synths are saying. Not being too set in what he wants to hear, but sort of guiding the music. I've been interested in this approach for a long time- what does the guitar want to say? What sound does the synth seem to like? I found some new techno. It's a good day.
Love the ambulance module that comes in at 7:27. Sits lovely in the mix. Where can I find this module?
Schneiders Laden is at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin and you can hear sirens every few minutes in every video recorded in that shop…
This year German law enforcement opened up a new police station right next to the place. This is Berlin 🤣
Great interview. Insightful. Helpful.
Great talk! Thanks Surgeon, Camilo and Schneiders
Surgeon ... very cool guy and unassuming. And great explanations of some things that are pretty difficult to explain :)
Great content but please get you level staging under control in the video!! It’s an audio channel after all!
yeah when the machines started playing my neighbours werent soo happy at 4am
Great insights from a master
Thanks for sharing this! Very interesting to hear a legend approaching Live Sets and improvisation. I really like and agree with the importance he puts in limiting his space and amount of gear. Less is more 100%
why not 50%?
WOW, was ein Gerät an Input! Surgeon ist ein sehr sensibler und klar denkender Künstler zugleich, der es aus purer Leidenschaft macht. Und was macht er? Brutalsten Vorwärts-Techno! WOW
voll! Mega sympathischer dude und echt spannende Ansätze :)
... aber seine Musik ist schon eher chillig als brutal ;)
great job with the channel, really enjoying your posts
Who is this David Bowie? 0:47
"It's dramatic in a live situation" Words from a musician who masters his instruments.
Surgeon is LEGEND
30:00 ish, I totally agree.. The worst thing to happen for DJ’s is the disappearance of 1210’s over the years. To collect and play vinyl took a certain amount of commitment, dedication… and that applies the same to modular analogue.
P E A C E : )
"Don't give the crowd what they want", that's exactly what they want
Which module is controlling the triggers of the lead sounds (noise engineering loquelic iteritas) . Is that also the Launch Codes?
I see no VCAs and he mentioned just doing manual modulation so what he using the Quadra for?
Does he have a way to program a rithm quickly? Or are they only pre built or random?
Hi there!! How the multi audio signal go with only 4 input mixer? I suppose not the way using stack cables? Any utility module which I don’t see in the system?
I wish that trumpet player would learn a third note 4:44.
13:23 horn player finally feeling the groove -
I always hear sirens when playing with LFO 😂
@@kasparasvisockas4289 all the best fire engines come fully equipped with multiple LFOs 😀
I thought the siren was part of his set! that sounded sick!
The Master!❤️
Anyone know how he’s sequencing the hats and the kick?
Octatrack headphone out with a very loud sampled pulse to the Tempi module. Then Tempi to control everything else timewise. Not a very orthodox approach for sure. But its kinda the same as sending CV out. ❤
Is it possible to get the list of modules used in the rack?
@@djpooyen Thanks!!
Cheers for the link mate!
@@djpooyen
Thanks!
And again?
@@fjb9095 Does anyone still have it? :D
Does anyone know the little sequencer with the 5 white buttons ?
Antimatter Launch Codes
Glad that I bought Elektron gear. Alone or with modular quite a powerhouse for live shows. Sample the modular and remix into Octatrack. Love that trick.
or unify mixer allow to multi ?
Does anyone know what mode the Disting is in? Also, is that a pulses expander next to the turing machine?
Sven Lito Disting is in LEGEND mode
''I just need to be patient.''

;D
Ambulance came at right timing lol
about the audience that are more accepting of experiemental stuff with modular than dj. I would believe it is because they can identify the instrument / sound source, making it less alien
What is the name of the case?
As a techno producer I have always wanted to explore the modular world, but am terrified of it bankrupting me. After looking into what I want, the minimum price for entry into the hobby seems to be around $5000 (for a proper techno set up, at least), and thats considered cheap in the modular community. How are you (modular people) funding your builds? Genuine question. Ive always been curious, considering most producers and musicians I know are very poor.
I sell pictures of my toes to weirdos on the internet too find my addiction
Well other than the case, you can make progress about $200-300 at a time!
Module by module by module…
What does a reverb pedal do I’m a guitar player I don’t understand how it works for surgeon
It does the same thing it would for a guitarist. He routes some sounds through it and loops these sounds in the sampler. That looks like a Strymon pedal which sound pretty good.
what is the name of the module left of the tempi? grazie
Dani Koenig I think it might be Launch Codes or possibly another module by the same company.
@@brianrodman1033 thanks
The one and only surgeon
What's the module at 6:30 and before / after that he uses to record his beat?
I think you mean the AntiMatter Launch Codes trigger sequencer
What's the mixer in the center of his rig?
It’s a filter bank
what a legend
Does any one know what is he using as the main sequencer then?
Looks like launch Codes + Tempi to me, but i'm a modular noob
Maybe clocked by a trigger sample via the octatrack?
What does he use to get them nice hats?
I think he said he was using TipTop audio drum modules for high hats and claps.
i like how he talks
very cool
Mad audio scientist.
I thought that Surgeon wore glasses and had a beard? Nice insight.
maybe you were thinking of sleeparchive?
He did
@@Drone453 yeah I did not recognize him in this video from recently think he has glasses and beard looks completely like another person and sounds different as well.
@@GuitarsAndSynths He looks much younger now IMO.
it looks very cool btw....Lol
A fucking leyend
could you not have got some better spectators. he asked if there is any questions and the camera pans across this group of half dead elderly people who couldn't really come up with a decent question. I mean do they even know who this man is.
Maybe he just covered everything?
But yeah,
what would you have asked him on the fly in a room full of people?
@@richjones7313 can to touch you?
live sets are cool...but djs set has wide variety of sonic characters & style that's very interesting specially for performances that last's more than 30mins

Love me some surgeon but jesus christ get a handle on your audio mr video editor, terrible.
didin't know that Jim Carrey makes techno
hmm really?
Looks fuck all like him
he looks like David Bowie, nothing like Jim Carrey
theres dozens and dozens and dozens more artists (with modular synths) who could do this and even better .. however Surgeon it is ...
name a few, babe

to play four notes, bah, bad music imo
idiot.
You're a fucking moron and clearly shouldn't be commenting on a legend like Surgeon
Techno=harmonics/noise/depth
House=notes/congas/handbags
Not the most articulate guy is he
he's like Terminator X, speaks with his hands ;)
appalling, all of that stuff to make four notes....
lol you idiot.
