  • "The Chessmen of Mars" is a science fiction novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first published in 1922. It is the fifth book in the Barsoom series, which takes place on the fictional version of Mars known as Barsoom.
The story follows Tara, the daughter of John Carter, Warlord of Mars, and Dejah Thoris. While flying her flier in a storm, Tara is blown off course and crash-lands in the distant region of Bantoom, a mysterious and dangerous area of Barsoom. There, she is captured by the Kaldanes, a race of highly intelligent creatures who have evolved to exist as heads without bodies, which they attach to the Rykors, headless humanoid bodies.
Gahan of Gathol, a noble prince who has fallen in love with Tara, sets out to rescue her. He disguises himself as a simple warrior and infiltrates Bantoom. Meanwhile, Tara manages to escape from the Kaldanes and stumbles upon a city called Manator, where she is captured again and forced to participate in a deadly game of Jetan, or Martian chess, which is played with living pieces.
Gahan also arrives in Manator, and through a series of daring exploits, he joins the game of Jetan to protect and ultimately rescue Tara. The game is filled with danger and intrigue as players fight to the death, and Gahan must use all his skills to survive and save the princess.
Throughout the novel, Burroughs weaves themes of love, bravery, and adventure as Tara and Gahan navigate the treacherous landscapes and political intrigues of Barsoom. Their journey brings them face to face with a variety of bizarre creatures and challenges, ultimately leading to a dramatic and thrilling conclusion.
