  • Groundwater Contamination in Sukinda Valley: Chromium Pollution & Its Impact | Current Affairs by Sudhanshu Sir | IAS Next
Welcome to another insightful episode in our Current Affairs series on Environment, Ecology, and Biodiversity. In this video, Sudhanshu Sir from IAS Next delves deep into a critical environmental issue affecting various parts of India: Groundwater Contamination with a Focus on Chromium Pollution in Sukinda Valley. This topic is highly relevant for UPSC, State PCS (like UPPCS), SSC, Railway, RBI, and other competitive exams.
    In this video, we cover:
    Groundwater Contamination Overview:
A report by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) highlights high levels of chromium contamination in groundwater in Sukinda Valley, posing severe health hazards.
    Understanding Chromium:
Properties: Shiny, hard metal with a high melting point, symbol Cr, atomic number 24.
Types: Trivalent Chromium Cr (III) (essential for organisms) vs. Hexavalent Chromium Cr (VI) (highly toxic and primarily produced by human activities).
    Chromium Pollution:
Sources: Mining, smelting, metal processing, industrial production, and agricultural activities.
Affected Areas: High-risk states include Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha (Sukinda Valley), and West Bengal.
    Sukinda Valley Area:
    Location: Jajpur district, Odisha.
Significance: Largest open-cast chromite ore mines, known for high chromium reserves.
    Health and Environmental Impact:
Human Health: Increased cancer risk, pulmonary and gastrointestinal issues, skin ulcers.
Agriculture: Reduced soil fertility, hindered plant growth, and yield.
Biodiversity: Negative effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
    Uses of Chromium:
Extensively used in industries like mineral, chemical, welding, and refining, as well as in iron, steel, cement, glass, ceramics, leather, and paint industries.
    Sources of Groundwater Contamination:
Naturally Occurring Contaminants: Arsenic, fluoride, iron, uranium.
Agriculture: Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides.
    Industrial Waste: Untreated effluents.
Urbanisation: Leaky sewage systems and improper waste disposal.
Saltwater Intrusion: In coastal areas, affecting freshwater aquifers.
Primary Agents Responsible for Groundwater Contamination:
Arsenic, Fluoride, Nitrates, Uranium, Radon, and other trace metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, and nickel.
