    About the National Green Tribunal (NGT):
    Establishment: The NGT was established under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010, with New Delhi as its Principal Place of Sitting and Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai as its regional benches.
    Mandate: The NGT aims to dispose of applications or appeals within 6 months of filing.
    Historical Background:
    Rio De Janeiro Summit (1992): India committed to providing judicial and administrative remedies for environmental damage.
    Judicial Activism: Landmark judgments like Subhash Kumar v. State of Bihar (1991) established the ‘Right to a Clean Environment’ as a fundamental right.
    Law Commission Recommendations (2003): The 186th Report recommended specialized environmental courts.
    National Environment Tribunal Act (1995): Provided strict liability for damages from hazardous substances.
    National Green Tribunal Act (2010): Led to the establishment of the NGT.
    Composition:
    Chairperson: Heads the organization.
    Judicial Members: 10 to 20 members.
    Expert Members: 10 to 20 members.
    Benches:
    Principal Bench: Located in New Delhi for the Northern Zone.
    Regional Benches: Bhopal (Central Zone), Pune (Western Zone), Chennai (Southern Bench), and Kolkata (Eastern Bench).
    Powers and Jurisdiction:
    Handles civil cases related to environmental issues linked to laws like the Water Act, Air Act, Forest Act, Environment Protection Act, and more.
    Guiding Principles:
    Principle of Natural Justice: Ensures fair and impartial decisions.
    Principle of Sustainable Development: Balances environmental protection and economic development.
    Polluter Pays Principle: Holds polluters accountable.
    Flexible Rules of Evidence: Considers a wide range of evidence, including scientific data and expert testimonies.
    Appeals:
    Orders can be reviewed and challenged before the Supreme Court within ninety days.
