    My grandfather was force conscripted into German army. After he built his house after coming back, he used a german helmet for 40 years to empty out the septic tank.
    I asked him to give it to me after sewer renovation in the 90’ and he went into a rage fit over it. That thing disappeared soon after that. I never saw it again. Last I remember it was still in quite a good condition. Much better than the one in the video.

      @gr1mrea9er82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Another asinine comment. Did you watch the video at all? All the Lefranc & Bourgeois oil paints seen @13:20 says Huile, which is French for Oil. And yes they are artist oil paints. It's not oil paints from the dollar store. This particular brand comes from the biggest manufacturer globally and it is the brand most used by both amateurs and professional artists. Similar to what Windsor & Newton is to watercolors. But it's quality is reflected in the price.

    When a helmet is simply in a state which no value, historical or monetary is to be gained, such a restoration is perfectly fine to me, but if its in good condition, I quite prefer preservation, but bringing the helmets back into a condition worthy of the trenches, its quite nice, don't go drilling holes you shouldn't be drilling though.

    Tip when painting don't use a brush, use a cloth because it looks like it actually belongs on the helmet because it won't have brush marks.

    For those concerned about the paint, this pattern of paint was actually used by the Germans in ww1 (there were official guidelines that made it look like this). Although, combining 2 original helmets to make a “new” one is quite questionable

    Nice job. But...keep the history alive...only the green color was enough.😐

    I saw the first helmet, and was like, "Oh hell no, that thing is gone"
    then I saw the second one and was like, "okay, maybe not."
    I'm not the kind of guy to restore, I'm the kind of guy to chop metal things up and turn them into something new.
    Though I do make medieval armor.

    Работа отменная. Но на мой взгляд лучше было оставить оригинальный единый цвет искусственно его состарив в ёмкости с камешками и песком.

    Idk why everyone hates the paint so much it was used in ww1 and he probably did it because he couldn't have the original steel texture but Noone here seems to know that

    Just a tip if ya welding thin metal if you hold a piece of brass behind the hole your welding your weld won't stick to it and you can fill the steel easier , plus it leaves it smoother therefore less fettling I've been doing this for years never failed ..

      I realized that this German Nazi soldiers iron helmet, was first in the very worst shape ever. It had rust holes merely everywhere, even bumpy rust spots as well. 😳

    Great Work! Excuse the ignorance, I am assuming the tortoise shell painting was camouflage? And the rough texture to the painting would avoid glints or reflections correct?

      Camouflage paint was not formally introduced until July 1918, when German Army Order II, No 91 366, signed by General Erich Ludendorff on 7 July 1918, outlined official standards for helmet camouflage. The order stipulated that helmets should be painted in several colours, separated by a finger-wide black line. The colours should be relevant to the season, such as using green, brown and ochre in summer.
