Binging a lot of these videos as I try to learn mandarin...
for the Xiang... when to use it vs. yao? I would use "Yao" for "want" and "xiangyou" for "would like" but never thought to use "Xiang" as a standalone word for want

Thanks for watching! A good introduction to xiǎng/yào/xiǎngyào can be found on Chinese Grammar Wiki: resources.allsetlearning.com/chinese/grammar/Comparing_%22yao%22_and_%22xiang%22

我想吃饭 vs 我觉得我需要吃饭 - want vs should/need, but both effectively communicate the same idea to the listener, I think.

This is a great example of how their meanings can overlap! It's like the difference between "I want to eat" vs "I think I need to eat." There are still semantic and grammatical differences, though. Notice how in the 2nd sentence, the 我 needs to be repeated--because 觉得 is not used as a modal verb like 想 can be!
