Protecting your capital is much more important than making money. Basically because if you lose your capital, making money is much harder. ''Missing the train'' vs. ''losing your money''. There are a lot of trains, but if your money is gone, it's over.

"Don't let the fear of doing the WRONG thing, prevent you from doing ANYTHING"
if that doesn't sum up perfectionist procrastination mindset idk what does
Edit: Didn't realize how many people relate with this. Something that helps is knowing nothing is perfect, perfect is subjective to the individual, you're competing with your own standards. So just start, fail, learn, that's what perfection really is. Not nailing it in one shot.

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. I started investing with $150k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. @@campossanti The university cost and education in the US is so high that your parents usually can't afford or help you much to pay it. Working aside doing student job only carry your cost of living.
In the US most of the people have to get student loan to be able to go through college studies. Think of it this way: in Europe many countries have free or nearly free education (France, Germany, the Netherlands...) - at most you'd pay usually up to 5.000€ per year.
The US system is very different and usually when you pay around 20.000$ you got a 'good deal'! Plenty of people pay 30-60k$ PER YEAR!
After 4 years you'd usually end up like Matt (with near 100k in debt)

    • @berntanders

Leo Desmedt It is so different from Norway for example. Pretty high wages and the education is pretty much free. Student loans are pretty much to cover living costs while studying in the years after turned 19. Those living costs could be a bit in university areas becausevof high demand, but still. It’s not like living in a big american city cost.

Because let me ask you this: How would you organize $1,000,000 if it was given to you? Would you invest it wisely, and learn from other multi-millionaires/billionaires on how to grow that money? Or would you blow it all on random spending?

Wally is a free money tracker app I've started using when I wanted to start "managing" my money. Wally let's me track what I spend my money on, how frequent I buy stuff, and see the current balance of my bank accounts and what's on hand. It's a little tedious to input the address, how much I spent, and on what. A simple picture of a receipt helps with the latter though. Being aware of my expenses and reviewing them once a week lets me adjust my spending habits.

@Memekage Nope. Some countries might have a system to check what your loans you have and if you are paying them. If it is really bad, you might need a special mortgage with high interest, but that is not the case for most things. Most people here have no student loans or they are at almost 0%, most have no car loan, credit cards are seldom used and mostly paid off each month.... there are people with personal loans and who put a lot of stuff on credit crads, but that is not the norm. For mortgages you need to prove what you earn and how stable that is and what debt you have. But no weird stuff like in the US, it is so weird that you need to have a credit card to build a good credit score to get a low % of interest for any loan. The fewer loans you have the better isn't it?

njo52 You must live in some kind of fantasy world. Maybe you come from a very privileged family, because what you’re saying isn’t true for most people in Europe. Average debt per adult in Germany is roughly 30k us dollars. Where I’m from it’s common to loan money to pay for living while studying at university, so most people have student debt despite there being no tuition cost. (Although not as high of a student debt as in the US). Also we do have credit scores. It’s the way banking works in practically every country, because safety means lower interest.

in 150€ bills are your rent and food? The rule i could give you is kinda simply "free" money, so money you dont pay rent/food/insuarences etc. with, is for you 200€, i would go for 80% investment, 10% speculations (like bitcoin) and 10% shopping/travel money (things you which arent essential, but make your life better) - also from the 80% investment you should first built a savings account (money to live for 3-6 months) and then rest should go in the stock market (yes its fluctuates more than gold or bonds, but also have way better return in the long run and investments are per se +10 years time horizont)

This was both inspirational and did not send me to sleep! Thank you so much Matt for sharing your own experience :) I'm 25 and have been telling myself (and my friends) that I will be investing 'soon' and figuring out my financial goals 'soon' but it is very daunting with the number of opinions out there. When you spoke about investing your time and energy into content creating because thats where you find value, that was a great reminder to not needing to get the biggest bang from your buck from managing your finances, but just managing them is simply enough.

Thank you for sharing how you manage your finances. I picked up a few things and especially liked the quotes you shared towards the end.
Don’t let the fear of doing the wrong thing prevent you from doing anything.
Investing in your personal finances is an investment in yourself.
