i am from mexico so I didn t see never a tornado in my life but when i was in chicago in that exact moment, i remember my grandma scream " todos al sotano ! " and the sirens started to make that sound , thanks god my family was ok but it was really creeppy
The sound is weird because its changing frequencies so people who are hard of hearing or even asleep can definitely hear it and prepare. Also you can hear the person filming say "I'm so glad I'm home" so they're obviously filming from their apartment building.
Here in Illinois if we hear stuff like this we're usually not scared by it at all were just mildly annoyed lmao. Last night we had warnings and the sirens went off in the nearby suburbs and instead of panicking, everyone was like "ugh seriously again??" Because it's so common here
For us here in Alabama we don't have hi/lo sirens like this because there aren't skyscrapers to block them out... We have flat tones but they rotate around so it echoes where the echoes have a lower tone and the ones actually facing your area have higher tones. Makes them sound really beautiful and like a chorus of angels, which, paired with the adrenaline and dread of a tornado coming make for a really amazing emotion that I can't describe...
Huh... never heard of a siren sounding like angels. Do you think you can capture it (if you still live in that area) on video and post it on your channel? I'd love to hear it myself.
A LOT of people to this day STILL think that this is a 2001 in fast wail and a Modulator in Alternate Wail. In fact, this is the Wrigley Field Modulator 6024 on MC Controls Using a Custom Fast Wail Tone, along with a DSA on Lake Shore Drive using Alternate Wail.
I went and listened to a nuclear siren test (one in Florida) and it just sounded like the Missouri tornado sirens. Without the 'this is a test' and dial tone stuff, you're kinda just expected to know that they test the tornado sirens on the first Wednesday of each month.
As someone from the Chicago metro, I will say most of us aren't really scared by tornado sirens or warnings, especially in the suburbs. For us, these things are so common that we just get somewhat annoyed and head to the basement lol (or walk outside to look for it). It happened just last night and will probably happen a good 25-50 more times before September. Illinois has the 5th highest amount of tornados out of any state in the US so this is very normal, everyday life for us. We get more tornados on average per year than many of the states that are stereotypically a part of tornado alley (though a lot of places do lump Illinois in with tornado alley)

Hearing the scary alarms that tells us a natural disaster is coming reminds us that what we’re about to experience something scary, dangerous, and life threatening causing us to evacuate or hide from the scary thing or situation.
Well, I can put it this way. I don't think anyone would beware and run away from a danger approaching (tornado in this case) if you played a happy song would they? You HAVE to put something unnerving so people know the danger coming. After all it isn't as scary as being hit by the real tornado itself right? Putting something different in this case would make no sense. That's the whole point of an "alarm" the same thing you put on your bedside to make you wake up. You most likely put something that went a loud and unsettling BEEP BEEP BEEP to wake you up. Not a tiny whisper. This is the same case.
I'm not sure the complete science behind it, but it's not "to sound scary so you'll be scared". It has more to do with the fact that there are a lot of tall buildings downtown and they could block some of the vibrations from the siren. If they use a bunch of different pitches and tones, they know it will be heard throughout the city. ((:
Fun fact: it is dangerous to be on a rooftop while a storm because lightning strikes high places. But the lower the rooftop is, the lower chance that lightning will strike on the rooftop. Stay safe out there!
I'm not sure why a 2009 video was recommended for me in 2022, but I'm glad that it was. What a wonderfully creepy noise, is this the original source for the Siren Head sound?
Sometimes tornado sirens can be programmed to give the up and down effect this is usually reserved for a tornado emergency situation where a killer tornado is on the ground entering the warned area this really alerts people in immediate danger that this is a special situation and not a regular warning however in this case the system malfunctioned and should have sounded the even tone siren.
Not trying to be offensive but do you have a source for this because there are other videos of Chicago at different day times that played the exact same siren sounds.
@@N-DUR I will explain how all this evolved later this afternoon, there is no official orders on how a siren should operate but some sirens have the ability to give a straight tone or warbling tone to let proper authorities know how urgent a situation is it is unofficial and dates back to the 1960s.I will get back to you...
In the 1960s in unincorporated cook county volunteer fire depts. had sirens to call in personel they used an up and down wailing siren because this type brought the most attention in a serious situation. as civil defense and towns started to add weather or tornado sirens they at first and still do use a long blast they rotate on a pole for maximum effect. a spotted or radar indicated tornadic rotation promts a siren to get turned on. as a throwback to earlier times some older spotters to really get the public to heed the warning by using the wailing mode especially on pds tornado warnings. Yes i know the system in chicago somehow was even in test mode or on other warnings not taken out of up and down mode. Perhaps the sirens malfunctioned and were eventually fixed but as i know here in chicago it takes a long time to get anything done. but there is no policy other than unoffically using the system to really pay attention to a dangerous situation. it was scary for a reason.,like what the hell is going on . it did its job as all the different times and places were noted by us subscribers If the sky is black with fast moving clouds and you hear that same sound take cover immeadiatly.
@@williamdenton6427 Thank you for your explanation. Do you live in Chicago? I've seen footage of 2009 and 2015, both sirens sounded the same so it must really took them some time to get this done. I think I've seen also footage of 2021 which was declared as tornado warning from Chicago where the sirens sounded in a similar tone but like not broken as you've mentioned so you could be right about it.
@@N-DUR I work and live in Chicago, i am a lanscaper and one of my sites is chicago city hall. I am there all the time. It envolves so much red tape to get anything done Chicago is reactive not pro active . IT takes a lawsuit or a major disaster to get anything done, it is always why do we need to spend money on that? Then as fate would have it a disaster happens and the money fairy appears granting any wish. Knowing chicago as well as i do if an ef5 tornado was at the west edge of the city they probably would not even activate the sirens they dont want to appear crying wolf, then after hypothtically a trillion dollar amount of damages and scores of fatalities they would say oops we dropped the ball. as much as they hate when i open my mouth its the truth and around here thats a rare commodity. I love my city and am really disappointed on how it is falling apart.

And i am watching this when i'm supposted (don't know how to write it :v) to be asleep :v
Same here.
Same lol
Are you sleeping now little girl?
People before 2020: the siren is so freakin scary
People after 2020:SIREN HEAD!
I could imagine a bunch of pierced, tattooed ravers with hair in their faces running out and dancing to this.
rlt94 lmao I can't even ..
I'm crying laughing XDXDXDXDXD
XD XD Im done!!
Lmao so true
+rlt94 Ahaha
2009 : oh no we gonna die in a tornado ! 😓
2018 : scary eas alarm 😣
2020: OW ITS SIREN HEAD 🤓
2023: who the fuk is siren head
no.
It's different frequencies so EVERYONE can hear it.
Deaf people can hear that?
I thought that too---its actually just the echoes bouncing off the skyscrapers and stuff
Cynder Rose No it actually makes all the different frequencies. I don't know why, though.
So EVERYONE can hear it. Some people are deaf to certain tones.
Deaf people can't hear tornado sirens
I would have died of fear without a lightning strike, lightning hit the house there, and Serena frightens me to horror and goosebumps 😢
That siren is at low battery, its not suppose to sound like oversized dying satanic toy from wallmart
Low battery.
Tornado siren.
Tornado sirens are alert systems.
They don't run on battery.
It's Alternate Wail.
+Fatmeatball actually, some sirens have battery backup incase the mains goes down.
+Fatmeatball The two sirens here in my town have a back-up battery system in case the power goes out wherever they control them from.
they aren't powered by batteries
half the time the batteries are drained by the time they need them.
It sounds like scary music from a clown movie
Rosal ie I agree
@@aliegg4790 I agree with IT!!!
Fun fact: it is dangerous to be on a rooftop while a storm because lightning strikes high places. But the lower the rooftop is, the lower chance that lightning will strike on the rooftop. Stay safe out there!
I assume it either was a window or a porch on a high building
Not so fun fact: lightning may burn your skin.
True
since when or where is elementary school standard education on weather a 'fun fact'?
0:17 you can see the wall which is apart of the same building. Anyways later cutie.
This tornado siren is here to save the day!
_By scaring away the damn tornado._
I'll actually be scared of the siren more than the tornado 🌪 😭
Everyone's mentioning the siren but I can't help but look at the awesome lightnings in the background, especially the one at the end!
Well Chicago is known as the golden coast. Btw if you ever get a chance, fly over it at night. It’s absolutely beautiful.
0:23 you can see the light of the lightning!
this is like saying H2O is water
It’s Called: “Light-ning” For A Reason

No shit 😂
@@tomato-v8x 💀💀💀
What a nightmare. The weather is terrifying enough, that Siren takes the whole Cake
IS THAT SIREN HIGH ON DRUGS!!!!!!!!?????????/
WolfyHabits That is an Alternative Wail signal from an EOWS Siren X)
lol :D
WolfyHabits Whatever it's on, I want some.
@@aliultimate009 Actually it's a Modulator or DSA. Chicago doesn't have EOWS sirens.
@@queencitysirens8755 I see.
I'm not sure why a 2009 video was recommended for me in 2022, but I'm glad that it was. What a wonderfully creepy noise, is this the original source for the Siren Head sound?
No since the siren head was created in 2020 2017 while the eas alarm come from 2009.
@@bro_i_dont_exist So why couldn't the alarm be the source for the Siren Head sound?
@@kevinroche5480 because it’s “too old.” It is the Original Siren Head sound
@@omniscientbarebones no it comes from a cthulhu video titled "cthulhu attacks chicago"
@@thatredsunburst i hope you are a troll
I love my city and am really disappointed on how it is falling apart.
genuinely, if I was there I would be living a life time.
Why they sound different
PandaBoy 342 They have a few different types in service that make different sounds.
It's a f.s modular or however it's spelled anyway it's doing a tone called alternative wail and there's another siren in there too
PandaBoy 342 because two of them where going off at the same time
BECAUSE CHICAGO IS TOO MUCH NICE
PandaBoy 342 they're broken. I've heard broken tornado sirens and they sound like this.
This video is 13 years old and yet it is still popular and quite mainstream
Is it because of siren head
0:09 "what do you do if there's a tornado coming?" *I'M DYING*
What is the sound at the end of the siren 🌪
Brings me back to 2020. Any of yall remember Siren Head?
