  • Secrets of Moshe's Greatness
The Midrash vividly portrays Moshe Rabbeinu’s boundless love for Bnei Yisrael, a quality that defines his unparalleled leadership. From his earliest actions-killing an Egyptian who struck a Jew-to his unwavering commitment to their redemption, Moshe’s concern for his people is legendary. This devotion is tested when his initial mission to free the Jews not only fails but intensifies their suffering. Overwhelmed by anguish, Moshe turns to Hashem with a heartfelt complaint: “Why have You sent me? You have not saved Your people, and instead, the slavery has worsened.”
The Zohar explains that Moshe’s boldness could have warranted severe consequences, but Hashem recognized that his protest arose from genuine pain for the plight of Bnei Yisrael. Moshe’s anguish stemmed from the unintended harm caused by his efforts to help, a testament to his deep empathy. This narrative raises a profound question: Why didn’t Hashem allow Moshe’s first attempt to succeed? If the Exodus mirrors the ultimate Redemption, understanding this delay offers critical insights into the divine process of salvation.
Rashi adds another layer to the story, noting Hashem’s comparison of Moshe to the Avos, who never doubted His promises. Yet this comparison seems perplexing. The Talmud (Nedarim 32a) attributes the enslavement in Egypt to Avraham’s “doubt” when he asked, “How will I know that I will inherit [the land]?” Moshe, however, never doubted Hashem. Why, then, was this lesson directed at him, and what deeper purpose did it serve?
Join the Shiur to explore the profound connection between Moshe's journey, and a person's journey through life, his suffering and his Redemption. By delving into the teachings of Chazal, the Zohar, and the Arizal, we will uncover the hidden messages embedded in this narrative and their relevance to our own journey toward Redemption.
