Shalom friends, some of you may be wondering about Aaron's staff, which also played an important role, for example it was used to initiate the first three plagues. While there are instances wherein the two staffs overlap and work together in their roles and functions, they also carry distinct symbolism and are associated with different aspects of leadership and Divine service. Some authorities maintain that Aaron used his own staff in initiating the first three plagues, while others sages state that Aaron used Moshe's staff. Since Aaron's staff is a whole other story and would have been distractingly tangential to the main theme of our lesson, I purposely did not relate to it here...but will relate to it in the future with Hashem's help. Thank you!

Rabbi, isn't the word for "rod" or "staff" in hebrew, same or closely related in grammatical form to "tribe"?
Meaning, the tribes are really designed to hold us up in righteousness and fruitfulness like a rod is designed to hold Moshe and the isrelites up for over 6,000 years.
    Exodus 1:7
"but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them."
Right before Exodus 1:7, it's all about the tribes...
And at the ending of Genesis, it's all about the tribes...
    Right?
Baruch Hashem for being the light.

The word for staff is “sharvit”.
The word for tribe is “shevet”.
Not related as far as I know, but I’m no expert.
But you pose an interesting idea.

      @
      Shevet (שֵׁבֶט) - “Tribe”
Shevet (שֵׁבֶט) - “Rod” or “Staff”
      1. “Rod” or “Staff”
In ancient Israel, a שֵׁבֶט could refer to a physical rod or staff.
A staff was often used by shepherds for guiding or protecting their flock, and by leaders as a symbol of authority or kingship.
      2. “Tribe”
The same word שֵׁבֶט came to signify “tribe” because each tribe (in biblical times) was understood as being under the authority or “staff” of its leader.
The staff was thus a metonym-a concrete symbol-for the leadership and lineage of a particular group.
Consequently, the term expanded to denote the tribe itself.
Why do both meanings use the same word?
Shared Root & Semitic Word Structure
In Hebrew, many words that seem unrelated in English share the same root letters and thus carry connected connotations.
The root ש‑ב‑ט originally has to do with “striking” or “wielding authority,” which naturally ties a staff (used for guiding, striking, or symbolizing leadership) to the concept of a tribe (the people under that leadership).
      Symbolic Connection
In the ancient Near East, a staff was not only a shepherd’s or traveler’s tool but also a powerful symbol of rulership and identity.
Over time, the link between the staff and the community it represented (the “tribe”) became so strong that the same word came to denote both.
      Biblical and Cultural Context
Biblical Hebrew often employs physical, tangible objects (like a staff) to stand for the authority or identity of a group.
For instance, Numbers 17 mentions Aaron’s rod (מַטֶּה, a synonym for שֵׁבֶט) as a sign of authority. Similarly, each of the twelve tribes of Israel was sometimes represented by a staff or emblem, reinforcing the connection between “staff” and “tribe.”
      Summary
שֵׁבֶט (shevet) is a classic example of Hebrew’s root-based system: the same set of consonants (ש־ב־ט) yields related meanings-“rod”/“staff” and “tribe”-due to a common theme of authority and leadership. Essentially, the object (staff) became shorthand for those who followed or were identified by it (the tribe).
      :)
