      I know this is an old comment it's called loop recording.
      it's always recording and it triggers a "real" recording when the criteria is met (motion detection).

      @@hollowedone Excellent and simple description... Similar to how Amazon Echo and other devices like them work. They have limited internal memory and if the audio or video isn't utilized (called for by the system) it is basically overwritten by new data every few (~7-12) seconds, depending on the device.

    To continue to record (for a short time) during a power out you need to have your modem, router, and any wireless access points all on battery backup. Most cable and dsl services remain active during a localized power failure so as long as ALL you home network equipment is on UPS power you should be fine until the UPS runs out of battery power.

    Hi Robb,
    Thanks for the review - Good job mate. Just one point of clarity please in case I misunderstood. You said that you chose the Ring battery spotlight because you didn't want to run cables etc. to the locations. I get that. However, you said that in case the power in the house went off then you were still recording. I don''t understand this part as surely you modem/router would also be off due to no power. Am I missing something?

    Excellent review and I listen to it twice. I have two concerns. 1. If there is something that the camera picks up, and you don’t want that video to be in the clouds, can you delete the video on your app and is it automatically deleted in the cloud? 2. The other claim was the battery lasting for six months. That’s a little bit of a stretch. If you choose a motion frequency at standard, the battery might last a little longer. And if you put it on light, it will last even longer. But I’m not sure of the difference between the two or three settings. The other setting was frequent, which they say will burn up the battery.
    Overall it’s a good camera/detector and I’m looking forward to other reviews.

    Biggest negative I have noticed so far is unlike the Ring Doorbells the motion zone setup on the Spotligh does not display a live image while setting the distance. Because of this, its a bit of trial and error when adjusting the range fan if your camera is facing the street or sidewalk. Pretty stupid problem to have considering it was already an option in the first ring doorbell and setup was very quick.

    Hi, Love the video. I just purchased the Ring doorbell the only way to reset it is to take the cover off which has a security screw to prevent people from messing with it. My question is is there anything preventing people from just removing the battery from the Spotlight which would disable it?
    Meaning is it just a simple as pushing the release button for the battery? No preventive locks or screws?

    Does the cam notify you that your battery needs to be replaced? How do you know the cam has switched from battery #1 to battery #2 and how do you know which battery to remove to charge? By the green and "orange" lights? Also when I first received ring spotlight cam it was ridiculously difficult to shut the lid to the batteries! I thought mine was broken. I should have listened closer to this video. You stated just that. So far it looks like a pretty good cam. Hope the wireless one works as good as the wired versions.

    One mis-leading issue is that if power goes out for your house, your wifi is out, so, there is no video being recorded onto the cloud/"off-site". It just is a motion light at that point. Therefore, you need to use a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for our internet modem and router.

    I have owned one of these for 5 days installed and working. DO NOT BUY THE BATT VERSION. here's why. The batt version upon being activated by motion will record for 30secs then stop and have a motion cooling off period of 30 secs before motion will activate it again. This means no matter what's going on at your recorded location you will only ever get 30sec per full minute of time. You miss most of whatever is happening on screen and this is the worst idea for a camera ever. The engineers did this with batt life in mind so they could advertise a long life batt. The rec time settings cannot be changed in anyway. I have been talking to ring for 3 hours now and they said it is their most common complaint and reason for returns. The wired camera does not do this. It will rec 1min and immediately activate again with motion continuing on screen. Do not buy battery model. The company is replacing mine as we speak.

    Very informative. How do you secure the battery door from someone simply popping the camera door open and stealing the batteries?

    • @robb.sutton
      @robb.sutton  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of our cameras are out of reach unless you have a ladder. If they do try to steal the batteries...you have a great recording of their face as they do it.

    Do I absolutely need to buy the subscription if I am using multiple cameras? I don't really need the extra features that the paid ones offer.

    • @robb.sutton

      You need the subscription if you are going to review footage. If you are just going to watch live you do not need it.

      60 days if you purchase that option (annual subscription) whitch varies depending on how many Ring devices you have. I currently have 3 (Doorbell, Stickup cam & Floodlight cam) and it costs me $90/year

    Some users have reported 'choppy' video with the Ring battery powered cameras..have you had any of those issues? There was supposed to be firmware fix for this, not sure if it's out though and I've been holding off on purchasing one until I know for sure..Great review!

    • @robb.sutton
      @robb.sutton  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have been having a lot of success with them. We even caught a deer pulling my wife's flower pots off the front porch! The video isn't shaky but sometimes it takes a second to get exposure dialed in as soon as it turns on from motion. That would be the same for any camera with auto exposure though.

      Roger that, thanks...yeah the deer hit my bird feeder every morning around 0400..our nest cam doesn't always hit on the motion, but scrolling through I can see it. Appreciate the fast reply...looks like I will be buying one and giving it a whirl.

    You stated there are [other brands] out there that are like the Ring Spotlight. Please DO tell the names of these other brands. I have 3 Nest cams, and a Nest Thermostats and I want to stay with Nest. I'm hoping Nest will come out with a comparable 'Battery Operated' products to compete with.

    I wanted to get the Ring Spotlight cam, but my HOA won't let me put it up unless it matches the color or my house, which is neither black nor white.

    • @xsteel3292
      @xsteel3292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paint the cover then. I did that with an ourside Genie remote for the garage and it blends. Also, I would double check HOA guidelines; i.e. legal stuff. I'm not so sure they could stop you from doing something security rated. It's just like when HOAs tried to tell people they couldn't use a dish instead of cable---illegal. Or you can't fly your American Flag. There are a lot of things HOAs try but are not in the know.

    I was woke up at 3 am to someone pounding on my back door which scared me big time. Been contemplating getting the ring battery spotlight cam but naturally was hesitant. After watching your video, I feel like I can handle this project by myself, I hope. Someone said that there are several subscriptions that you can get.... 1 is for $3 a month and other is $10 a month... can you explain the difference please. One other question.... can these be attacked to trees for a wider few?

      No, but with the motion detection function, the cam's floodlight will turn on if the cam detects movement. Plus it has IR so even without the floods on, a clear video is captured. If you are looking for stronger lighting, I recommend getting the Floodlight Cam

    Help! I got the spotlight camera because I wanted the spotlight to come on with motion at night as a deterrent to crime. However, I have determined that with a dim 60W porch light and the camera in a corner under that light, the spotlight does not come on! It will only come on if completely dark with porchlight off. This seems silly. The camera knows what time of day it is so should know the porch light is "artificial" and not daytime light. Ring thought at first the spotlight should definitely come on in any circumstance as long as light set to ON with motion at night but then said it will not come on if you have a porch light. I can't believe this can be true and if so, that there is not some workaround. Hope someone can help.

      I really need to test that out. There are certain places I have the cameras where it wouldn't work all that well because they are covered under decks. The open ones to the sunlight would be great.
