It’s sad because you’re right and so are they. Fast food/packaged food industry has made so much sugar the norm that everyone’s baselines of sweetness is messed up. Fruit should be what we consider a sweet treat. But because we fill ourself up with sugar from our first meal to our last, we crave it more. It’s a dirty game
My man was dead on with “they are so crunchy, they could cut your mouth” as a 43 year old that grew up with captn crunch, I can’t tell you how many times I shredded the roof of my mouth eating them. But they are too good not to eat

@@gordocarbo not all American parents remember it’s a huge country and it is definitely amongst low income parents, especially because the cereal boxes are so cheap even though they’re so bad for you.
These cereals will destroy your health if you eat them all the time. You are basically eating candy for breakfast.
Stick with the non sugary stuff such as Cheerios or cook a real breakfast with eggs, bagels, and toast.
You gotta watch the American Highschoolers try Brittish snacks. Some are so sweet it makes them gag or spit it out.
I love that one if the kids immediately commented on how Cap’n Crunch slices up your mouth. Every kid has had the roof of their mouth utterly destroyed by that cereal.
Especially the ones who like to snack on it dry and suck on them! :-)

Knowing brits are also disturbed by milk before cereal is the most connected I've ever felt to the UK
I for one can't stand milk anywhere close and I mean ANYWHERE CLOSE to room temperature so I before eating for anything with milk e.g. Graham crackers, Oreos, iced oatmeal cookies, etc. I pour my milk in whatever and add an ice cube or two depending on the size stir the milk for a bit until it's ice cold and then I add the cereal or w/e. The ice cubes stay in there and periodically I stir it again to make it just as cold as before. Who asked no one but I was just chewing the fat...

We do have normal cereals too. These are just the very sugary, colorful brands that are marketed to kids.

I grew up in the 70s and these cereals, especially Fruit Loops, Lucky Charms and Apple Jacks were way better back then because they had large, flavored sugar crystals and the cereal itself was larger!

I was a little surprised by their reaction with Trix and Froot Loops. But after they mentioned that they didn't have artificial fruit flavored cereal over there, I guess it makes sense.

So yes kids we have toast. Buttered toast is just called toast. But if u like cinnamon t9ast crunch, and toast, yall should try cinnamon toast. Just take a teaspoon of cinnamon and put it in 2 cups of sugar, mix it up in a covered container u can store. Make some toast with butter and dip into the mix. Its fire. If yall have never tried it, i highly recommend.
So glad that their top 2 were Cap’n Crunch, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. As an American, these two are easily my favorite two cereals!

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my second fav cereal but it’s been my fav for a while until I tried Cinnabon cereal. Cinnabon cereal is the best cereal I ever had. I also like Cap’n Crunch and it also tastes good dry which is a plus

I imagine that he puts on an outward show of "I won't let my students be subjected to anything that I'm not willing to try, myself" while, secretly, thinking "I'm not letting my boys have all the fun!"

He’s type of headmaster that every school should have, him just saying yes to josh and Ollie and giving it a chance has changed so many of the kids lives, ik my old headmaster would never of allowed stuff like this, it shows how mr smith cares about the kids and it must make the kids actually enjoy school so much more

I'm so glad they liked cinnamon toast crunch because I grew up eating that cereal everyday.😊 Until my mother made us stop eating cereal and now we eat green tea with pancakes, or toast with honey, or conchas, or muffins.😅

Yeah, question about that as a Brit who grew up in the general Essex area: is Coco Pops a British-only cereal or is it American and British? I haven’t seen much of it where I live, but it’s always been the *only* (and I mean *only*) cereal I’ll have since I turned five and discovered my tastebuds 😂
@@xshimaeraxx I had to Google Cocoa Pops because I don’t remember that cereal but turns out it was in the UK first and then came to US with the same name, then we changed the name to Cocoa Krispies and they’re still available today.

What’s funny is the reason it’s called Froot Loops is because they can’t legally say it contains fruit flavors because it’s all artificial, still one of the most nostalgic cereals for me though😂

@pattiwhite9575 General Mills figured out the world's secrets when they gave us Cinnamon Toast Crunch and French Toast Crunch. You are right, though, that Smores was amazing.
They changed the Fruit Loop recipe, not the same as it was in the 90s back then it was much better.
I knew they were going to find them too sweet, but when they were saying the Lucky Charms were too sweet, I knew we were in trouble, because that’s not a sweet American cereal lol

I’m just happy they tried Cinnamon Toast Crunch. That’s my favorite by far and it’s the only American cereal I stand behind.
I grew up on a farm and had three home-cooked meals a day, or two during school, and the only cereal we ever had was Shredded Wheat (the big biscuits!) or Grape Nuts. I still can't stand all these sugary cereals, just put me to sleep within minutes and hungry again not long after. BUT... I also love Cinnamon Toast Crunch on occassion! LOL
That's terrifying that he said the cereals couldn't be sold over there from chemicals used in them but in America we have 56 ingredients in our fast-food chicken sandwiches truly scary stuff.
We have so many chemicals we use that are banned elsewhere, but a lot of Americans do not know this. I don't buy this junk for my kids. The ingredients will scare you.
In Europe & other countries manufacturers have to prove an ingredient is not harmful versus the USA where someone else has to prove that it is harmful, but even then it's rare that ingredients are actually banned.

Artificial ingredients aren't created by magic. They are just combinations of natural materials. Plutonium is more 'natural' than xanthum gum for example, but one is a lot safer than the other.
Concerning that these cereals aren't sold in the UK. Make me rethink giving them to my kids.
I studied food additives and their effect on the gut microbiome for my PhD, and tbh ollie's explanation on FDA vs EU's rules on food additives was so clear and simple I was kind of impressed. 10/10 science comm to Ollie from a PhD student!!!
Wow, that’s actually a really cool thesis/study area! Do you have any links to publishings you can share? Or generally any advice on particular preservatives to watch out for (esp. in the U.S)? I feel like we’re exposed to more food preservatives everyday, and it’s hard to buy family-safe foods since companies use lobbyists to work with the FDA to tout some chemicals as safe. There’s no proper independent research anymore it seems.

Yes, Apple Jacks and Frosted flakes were a favorite of ours for a little while along with Sugar Corn Pops, and Sugar crisp cereals, those lasted a small amount of time at our home, then we went back to Cherrios, Cornflakes, Life Cereal, Raisin Bran and oatmeal the way mom prepared it for us.
Frosted Flake would likely be a hit. I doubt Cocoa Pebbles and Apple Jacks would work since it looks like the UK tastebuds don't like artificial cocoa and fruit flavours.

As someone 😂 who grew up in the northeastern US, I was waiting for someone to say that Captain Crunch cuts the roof of your mouth.😂 I loved the cereal growing up, but man, it was lethal to the inside of your mouth. The one with Crunch Berries made it more worth it (in my mind).

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is a favorite in our house. I'm not surprised the boys liked it so much. It's good without milk and just as a snack.

We have them in the UK. I'm not sure if they taste slightly different, but they're called Curiously Cinnamon (used to be Cinnamon Grahams). I sometimes get the Aldi knockoff Cinnamon Chips.

I think Apple Jacks should have been a part of this tasting. Probably my all time favorite fruit flavored sugary cereal as a kid. Smells like Saturday morning cartoons.

Captain crunch is crazy crunchy, I cut my mouth on that stuff so much as a kid. But it’s so good.

Honey nut still is very high sugar but I have to say it’s my favorite. I don’t eat grains or carbs an last time I had captain crunch I was 10 lol mom never had that stuff in the house only once in a while

@@jaegybombI think it’s more the chocolate. Many people here like peanut butter but your chocolate isn’t great compared to chocolate around Europe like (cadburys Milk chocolate, Belgium chocolate or Swiss chocolate). American sweets/chocolate tasted very artificial to what we are used too.

There needs to be a sequel. Frosted Mini Wheats, Cocoa Pebbles, Golden Grahams, Frosted Flakes, Life, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch, Cheerios, Raisin Bran Crunch...the kids might like some of these.
Especially Life... that is my go-to snack in a bowl of milk.
I never knew before but It seems like we have a lot of similar cereals in the UK as you have in the states. We don't have anything that looks like Life or Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch, but the rest you mention we have, just sometimes under a slightly different name.
I'd add coco puffs, I actually prefer them to the pebbles since the pebbles get soggy so fast

I live in the UK now, and I miss Honey Bunches of Oats so much! We have Frosted Flakes or Frosties here, though. I think they should have done Special K because it's different in the US and UK and is actually sweeter in the UK.

Simple tip for a healthier (and less sugar affected) kid. Pair his carbs with a little protein (and fat). Bread should come with a little butter. Pair a pancake with a sausage instead of tons of syrup. It slows the carb digestion which not only keeps your kid healthier but also makes them less likely to crash soon after breakfast.

It really makes me realize how ruined my tastebuds are as an American when people from other countries try our food and comment on how processed, artificial, sweet, and terrible it is lmao 😭 I actually noticed it myself when having Heinz tomato soup from the U.K. It actually tastes like tomato, unlike the Campbell’s tomato soup we have here. Now Heinz tomato soup is one of my favorites 👍

I wish our principals and teachers in America were like this headmaster. He clearly cares about his students and isn't concerned about brainwashing them into thinking they're foxes, women, Apache helicopters. The students are also so much more polite than our typical high schooler in America. Really makes you sit back and think about the state of our country and education system. So incredibly cool JOLLY donated that money. Headmaster Smith seems like a fantastic gentleman.
Captain crunch is my favorite. Trixie, lucky charms, fruit loops are so sweet! Try captn crunch mixed with raisin bran. My great grandmother taught me that in the late 1960s.
Can’t explain how happy it makes me to see these British teens and their headmaster sampling American fare. All their videos are awesome.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch is KING. Thank goodness it was in the lineup. Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Bunches of Oats, and Honey Nut Cheerio would be cereal I could eat every day for the rest of my life, and now that I've grown up, Cracklin' Oat Bran is a nice bit to change things up once and a while.

I've had Curiously Cinnamon (UK version) and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, both slap but the UK is better. Less sugary

You need to do the dichotomy of American cereal - it's the sugar bombs or it's sticks and twigs. I'm imagining the back-to-back of giving them Cocoa Puffs followed by Grape Nuts.

I'm a brit and I absolutely love Froot Loops. The proper US ones are hard to come by here, but you can find them if you know where to look. I think they're sold as "novelty goods" or something like that to avoid assigning them as a food (a loophole for the illegal colours etc).
They're crazily artificial flavoured, but I love 'em

Two words: Cocoa Puffs. My mom would never let us eat "junk cereal" so, the day I got my first job, I went out and bought a case of Coca Puffs. Still one of the greatest days of my life, more than 30 years later. Close second: Chocolate Frosted Flakes. Pure junk cereal heaven!

I loved Fruit Loops as a kid. Hadn’t had them in over 30 years, but a hotel we were staying in had them in their breakfast buffet. I ate four bowls, was SO happy. And I was hungry again two hours later, because of course, there is virtually nothing good in them. 😂
These boys were actually spot on with this one. Cap'n Crunch and cinammon toast crunch were the only legitimately good choices here. Two of my all-time favs. I also love golden grahams and corn pops.

As a child it was very rare that we had sugar cereals. My brother and I would beg for them, but almost never got them. The sugar bowl was on the table and my brother and I were allowed to add one teaspoon to our cereal. When my mother would leave the breakfast room we would sneak a couple extra teaspoons of sugar. This didn't happen often as she generally ate breakfast with us. However, our desire for sugar was insane, and it reached bizarre heights. My brother would eat boxes of jello. I would get out the Nestlé Quick and eat it with a spoon. Occasionally, I would drink Bosco from the bottle. I would do the same with Hershey's Syrup. My brother would make and eat butter and sugar sandwiches. Sometimes, he would put butter and sugar in a bowl, mash it until the butter softened, then roll it into balls and have butter and sugar balls. Peanut butter and brown sugar sandwhiches. It was insane. Still, we never had those dreaded sugary cereals. Lol.
