Hi: Your video's are soooo valuable to the new person trying to get a hold of these technologies. Received a new Taranis X9D+ a couple of days ago and decided to update it to the current firmware. Not sure what its original firmware was, but it's Bootloader version was 2.1.6. which was the source of about 9 hrs of headache yesterday. As I discovered, flashing the new firmware through Companion does not update the Bootloader which not only made Companion not want to talk to the radio but made the radio hang up and caused the SD card to get corrupted. I discovered that the best method of Flashing the Bootloader is by loading the firmware in the SD Card and then Flashing to Bootloader via the Radio. However, after much frustration I found out that the file cannot exceed 32 characters and that the SD card must be in FAT32 which my Mac refused to format correctly. After finally resolving those two issues I was able to flash the Bootloader to 2.2 and everything works fine. Just out of curiosity, does the QX7 have a built in "STM-DFU Mode" like the X9D Plus? This makes the X9D practically unbrickable. If so, does one use the same Zadig drivers as with the X9D?
Whats the difference between the firmware from frsky website and the opentx(or companion)? They are different versions now, like 2.3V0021 vs 2.3V0020. Also the opentx brings the radio firmware right? but I can later install a different one XJT to have the D8 if I needed it without the computer. By this I mean, install the international version of opentx and change the radio firmware between fcc and lbt. Or did I get it wrong?
Firmware is what runs the radio module and can be FCC or LBT. Opentx runs the rest of the radio..
Hey, ive flash my classic taranis 9xd with OTX 2.2 FW.. and ive brick my controller after the process completed.
Could it be hardware issues?

The OpenTX's 2.2.0 Companion is not offering the 2.2.0 firmware anymore. It's only offering 2.2.1. Do you have the 2.2.0 firmware file for the Taranis X9D+?
So probably a stupid question.. I have backed up my X9D+ and have downloaded the Companion 2.2.0 Windows executable. I have the 2.2.0 SD contents and Amber 2.2 pack. When I go to download the firmware for 2.2.0 the only option is 2.2.1. How do I get the 2.2.0 FW?
Hi I have a problem, I have stuffed up the instalation of a 4 in 1 Module having finished up with Firmware 2.2.3 on the TX and a 2.2.2 boot loader I can find no way to re flash it on the TX have watched many videos on the process but non work for me can you help, can find no way in Companion as I have corrupted backup files, I can find no way to download 2.2.2 Regards Geoff

I just bought a Taranis Plus radio (used). It had 2.1.6. The previous owner flew multi-rotors. I flashed it with 2.2. and tried deleting the info on the SD card but for some reason my computer would not let me. I tried going back to version on my other radio 2.1.9. but it would not let me. I get a SD card error now when I turn on the radio. When looking at my SD card on my desktop there were two files my system would not let me delete. I still get the sounds set-up on the switches for the multi-rotor. Tried merging the bit maps but now none show up. You think getting a new SD card will get rid of the SD card error and allow my bit-maps to show up again?
Great vid ! Do you absolutely have to install open tx? I have a x7 on the way and also got a 4-in one multi protocol i am mostly going to do a bnf for a bit but will be really thinking about building my own in a much later date .
I'm new to quads. I'm looking at an X7 transmitter. The flight controller board has Cleanflight, I've downloaded Cleanflight on my laptop and am familiar with Arduino.ide. I 'm only seeing the transmitters with Open TX. Do I need CleanFlight installed on the transmitter? Or does it work with the Cleanflight flight controllers with some setup configuration on the transmitter? Thank you. You guys rock with awesome video tutorials!
Sounds like you're very new to all this. Don't worry - in a few months you'll have all the lingo sorted. I'd recommend watching the 'Quadcopter Building for Beginners' series on the channel as it explains everything in lots of detail as well as some fo the videos in the 'Introduction to Remote Control' series.. OpenTx does not have the simulator. Does OpenTx 223 have it back??
Can you skip some firmware updates? My Taranis X9D+ is still running 2.1.6. Running 2.1.9 on Companion.

I used this video to upgrade firmware on a QX7 from 2.2.0 to 2.2.1 and... Brick. I didn't see any mention of version rename due to file length restrictions, or did I miss it. Any tips would be most appreciated.
OK, my bad. In 2.2.1 you have to hold the power switch down for power up, just as you have always had to hold the switch down for power down. File name length had nothing to do with it.
do u know if I can flash my receiver fw once I have upgraded from stock to opentx? I upgraded to opentx 2.2 rc13 before and I could not flash my receiver. I had to rollback to the stock fw and it worked straight away. the receiver I was trying to flash is frsky xm+.

I have a Taranis X9D with OpenTX 2.1.9, can I upgrade this to the latest version of OpenTX so that I could use the FrSky S6R? I'd like to install the STM32 iRangeX IRX4 also, so I could fly my e-flite planes. Do you see any problem with this plan?

While flashing firmware on QX7 something went wrong because now when I try to put the radio into bootloader mode all I get is a white flash and the radio stays off. Can you lend a hand in this situation?

My QX7 has open tx on it, but the version says that it is FrSky. Should I replace it with a new version from the FrSky site or switch over to the Open TX download?
If you mean the splash screen on startup or the audio says FrSky - they are both customisable so don't mean anything on their own...
@@Painless360 good point. Splash screen says Open TX. Drilling into the setup menu it says FrSky (and some numbers and letters in parenthesis). I am just wondering if I should do an update from FrSky or Open TX. I need to flash my R-XSR with ACCESS instead of ACCST if that makes any difference. I don't want to change too many variables at once.
I am not an expert in ACCESS. I used to upgrade to Opentx before using companion but I have not used any of the latest Frsky radios for some time. Best of luck with it..

The normal SD card contents you download and copy to it have audio files in there. Best of luck!
Does 2.2 have the installation wizard. Have flashed the new FW 2.2 but no wizard when I go to install a new model
Not on the Q X7. The radio cannot display greys (only black and white) so the support for images isn't great. Sadly that means that the developers, rather than use text only for the model setup wizard, just left it out of the Q X7 build.

I'm taking delivery of a new Horus in the next couple of days. I want to install Open TX 2.2.
Being new to all this - will I need to install OTX 2.1 and then upgrade to 2.2.?? I'm also confused by the many web resources for Horus / Open TX advice. Do you have a favourite which is current and bang up to date?? regards. Stu K
Yes, see the comment in the video about needing OpenTX 2.1 first. You may find that the Horus comes with 2.1 already on it.. The release notes on the project and OpenTX University are my ports of call for up to date links and detail.. Best of luck!
@Painless360 Great Video, Wondering why after i flashed the firmware my radio now comes up with a sd card warning about how it expected a different version. How do i fix that?
In the video - that file that I talk about needs to be in the root of the SD card..

Great video, I keep getting the error too. What file needs to be copied to the root of the SD card? Is it a file or multiple files copied to the root.
love your channel!! helped so so much, but having a night mare with my tarot 980, mainly due to not having enough knobs and sliders on my transmitter, futaba 10j so was looking at getting qx7 for the camera controls, 3d gimbal got zoom and film, photo to set up, and if i use it got another four channels to change camera settings, don't know whether i'd need them to be honest. i know i'd be able to set it all up on a teranis dx9 but don't know much about them, and i don't want to take any chances with it due to the size off it never mind the cost, just wondering what you would do?
+ISOSAILING I'd suggest taking a look at the Taranis series and OpenTX Mix School playlist on the channel. Lots of detail in there..
was thinking the easyist way to do it all would be with the Taranis plus, i'm guessing you could use a 2nd resever for the camera controls and set it up so you could have an option off using 2nd transmitter for operating the camera if needed, would be handy if i could although most off the time i'd just be flying it myself. thank you!!

Hi, your channel is really amazing and always interesting. About this series I have a question about the q x7.
I have played in a sim via USB connection, about 5 or 6 times . Then I wanted to go out for a real flight, what happens, the transmitter won't start up. Did you have such a problem or a solution? Banggood send me a new one for a low money and I want to connect again, but I am afraid about it. Would be nice if you tell something about this.

Hello Lee - I'm just trying to update a X7S from 2.2.0 to 2.2.3. However - I always get a "Firmware check failed" error message. A Backup to file works. The right X7/X7S FW file has been downloaded. Just can't get it to write the new FW version. Every Hint is welcome.
What is the file youve downloaded called?

@@Painless360 Hi Lee - no specific reason - just went be the defaults to update to 2.2.3. Just testet it with LUA and eu selected. Same error. Did you guys do anything special to these Radios (it is one of the radios you had your hands on last year in Waymouth. :) )

Is there a modual that supports d 8 mode for qx7
D8 needs to be enabled when OpenTX is flashed. I've not tried it on the latest videos from FrSky though.. best of luck
Your make great videos and always easy to follow. (only issue I had was after backing up the SD card you need to delete everything ! Then add the new 2.2 SD card version file first, before copying your models etc across or you get the SD card error message )
All the telemetry works fine. But just numbers now, no sexy Amber voice for Volts -feet-meters etc ??
Help any one ? Or has this been taken away in 2.2 ?

thanks for that, I thought it was in the SD card version file. Yeah all done and works fine, got back all the missing sounds. Have to use winrar to open the 2.2 sounds file not usual Zip ! (wish we could find all the Open TX instructions in one place lol ) Keep up the good video's sir !
Hi Painless, I first had to use Zadig 2.3 again to fix the STM bootloader. DFU problem The Windows 10 creators update had over written the bootloader it since I had original fixed this problem.

Yes, at the moment I have it working but needed the beta software on the S6R available on the FrSky website. I'm hoping it will become an 'proper' release soon then I can make the video..

ive managed to finaly bind a reciever to my taranis qx7 and i think im so close to getting it in the air. however the link isnt working for the companion download on the openTX website. has anyone got a miror for the companion installer?

Ok I am using open Tx 2.0.19 I would like to upgrade to 2.2 is there a way to upgrade you model files without having to do it in the radio twice with going to 2.1 then again to 2.2 like maybe in the companion possibly I do have a mass amount of model files and honestly would hate to lose them in a double transfer type of scenario
My exact scenario also. Only a brief mention to go to 2.1 first then 2.1 to 2.2. Can't do it directly?

***Only OpenTX 2.1 and later settings can be upgraded by the radio, if you currently run an even older firmware version you have to either go through 2.1 first before flashing 2.2, or do the conversion within companion. ***

pain im a noob to opentx and i have win 10 , have companion set up and ready to go with profile etc. go into bootloader mode says connected but no drives appear. not even a icon to safely remove drive. went into devices and found bootloader and it says error,, ?? i use this cable on several devices so i know its not the cable , what am i missing??

driiver issue but on win 10 drives will not appear. zadig worked , its all good now . i got it thanks . also with win 10 you cant use paint 3d, had to use paint . also for some reason the bit map can be much larger than 128x64, i will redo mine and post the actual size soon but several people claim that is the size too tiny. being new to this its awesome love it.
hello and great channel and video. love all your uploads. very informative. question, when updating open tx, im currently using XM+ which has no tele meaning i will not be able to do lua scripts. i will be upgrading to the frsky r9m long range module with r9 sim rx as an alternative to the crossfire, will this affect the update of the opentx? lastly, if im still using the XM+ rx, after updating opentx, will i have to rebind my XM+ to the radio once more? i ask only because my bind button has come off the rx and im unable to rebind if i need to. thank you again. i appreciate your kind help and advise
It's been a while since I updated one of my radios but so far (touches wood for luck) they have remembered the binds and all the details afterwards..

i wonder if anyone can help me, i flashed my Taranis X9D Plus to the new 2.2.3, now when i turn the radio on i don't get the "welcome to taranis" sound, the wav file is in my system folder in the sound folder, anyone got any ideas ??

The way I figured this out was to download the SD card contents for OpenTX 2.2 and then look at the track listing to see what the 'welcome' sound was called. Check out the one called 'hello.wav' in the system folder. That's the one played on start-up.. Best of luck!
Dear Sir, you and your videos are just fantastic, i have a question please, , I am new to this field and recently got a QX7S and a Rooster to start , but it seems so much more difficult, i'm stuck at the first step, the radio arrived just few days a go but the firmware is 2.2.0 date 05-09-2017 ,
do I need to upgrade a version to 2.2.2 ?!
the receiver has been used in my Rooster is R-XSR and vtx is TBS Unify Pro HV if it helps ?

The firmware installed on your radio is a great starting point. There is no need to upgrade at this point. Please watch my OpenTX series, and also the recent Quadcopter building for beginners series that goes through every single step. The rooster is a beautiful model, one of my favourite - you’ll have a whale of a time with it. Best of luck!

I just recieved my QX7 a few days ago and it has 2.2.2 (June 24 2018) on it (and just so you know its FCC, non EU, cause I live in the USA)...... so last night I downloaded the SD card file pack from Frsky and put that on the sd card and also downloaded the amber sound pack from open tx University and replaced that sound folder (that works perfect)..... my question is...after I put the sd card in the transmitter all amber sounds work and I have lua scripts as well...... but my Firmware Folder is empty (it just has readme.txt that says firmware goes in here).
I was told by a few people that their needs to be files inside the firmware folder??? Is this true??
I cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone about this... I cant even find a TH-cam video about this.
(I do have the lua scripts on this as well too)
I really don't want to but new firmware or do anything extra that I dont have to... I'm confused already lol.

You put the firmware you want in there - by default there is nothing in it - you can check this by looking at the original .zip file. Happy flying!

I've got a video on pretty much everything on the radio so you can find the content you need using a TH-cam or Google search i.e. 'frsky firmware painless360' to find the video that explains that. If you're new to the radio and OpenTX I'd suggest watching those videos so you can get to grips with it faster. Short answer to your specific question - it's for the receivers and internal modules, not OpenTX.. Best of luck!

If it's for a CE sticker on it, then it's LBT firmware.. (usually !) ;)
There's an eu lbt sticker on my Qx7.

+Kendall Smith I'd check the options you chose when flashing. The ones I used worked great.. let me know what it was when you get it sorted..
Painless360 - it was a setting option "mass storage" was selected and that was preventing the computer from recognizing the Taranis as a USB controller. This also allowed access to the SD card without going into boot loader mode.

After upgrading to OpentX 2.2, i have noticed in the telemetry screen the GPS coordinates are displayed wrong, anyone else had this issue?

I have a problem with the SD card, I have copied into SD card all folder properly, I downloaded from opentx website, but I continue having the SD error message.. it is wired.

I installed the opentx 2.2, then I copied the SD content into the SD card. I downladed the SD content from the opentx website (the version 2.2 0010).. Everything looks fine but I continue having this message and I do not know how to remove it, actually the Taranis works fine, and the SD card works fine, everything, scripts, backups and so on, but I get this message everytime I turn it on.

Sorry. I solved. I got the "SD Warning Expected version 2.2V0010".. And it was a "junk files" issue, it is important to delete everything from the SD, and then copy the structure in the SD card. If you use Macbook, it creates a hidden files, so these files has to be deleted, if not, it may appear the SD Warning when you turn on.

I notice that you did not tick the ''eu'' box I did the same and now I get the SD CARD WARNING Expected version 2.2v0010 on Tx start-up - you do go through a proceedure to eliminate the warning but I find it difficult, what with moving files around and such, not sure if it can be made simpler
Lee - hope you don't mind me saying so - I found that when you discuss the movement and setup of files,and the pointer is wandering around as well - I find it hard to follow you 5:45 to 8:0 say - I know it's a difficult balance to get a point over, especially to the lowest common denominator folk such as me.
As you can see Juan above found a way to get rid of the SD CARD WARNING but I'm a little hesitent to re-flash the FW and still keep my Amber Sounds and models - I suppose I've got to stik at it, thanks for great video's...joe
+Joe Stubbs Most of this modern radio control technology relies on a basic understanding of computers and files. So unfortunately if you’re not confident with the basics of moving files around then you can find it a little overwhelming.

Lee - got there, what helped was having a spare 16GB SD with adapter and used it to play with moving files around between Tx SD and adapter SD, so now have a spare SD card both working with Amber sounds - your video's help enormously thanks...joe

Not really, in Betaflight and iNavflight you can change the channel order to match..

+Old School R/C possibly due to the firmware on the radio. There are two types FCC for outside Europe and LBT for in Europe. Both the Rx and radio need to be on the same firmware..

Painless360 should I take out my SD card if I have to reflash my firmware?

Amber doesn't work on this radio. Only some of her files are recognised. We're waiting on someone making a sound pack suitable.
the Qx7 only uses 6 character file names not 8 character. if you go into the files and rename them to all be 6 characters then they will work.

I've now discovered there is a new issue of Amber sounds since I downloaded the 8 character filename file when I first bought me radio. The new one has 7 character filenames and works a lot better with the QX7. But it doesn't play all the sounds. I'm going to go through all 650 files and rename all the 7 character ones.
There are also some files that have been renamed. For example welcome greeting tada is now called hello

Hi Painless Thanks for another great vid, I may get one of these, they look just right for what I need, but holding off at the moment incase the EU completely wreck our hobby with needless regulations.

same situation in Australia. I'm waiting for December to find out how much I can legally do then. I was going to buy a X9D+SE, but now I'll wait until next year. Things are not looking good here.

Boy, this hobby of flying RC helis is getting more and more complicated. I have just barely caught up with FBL and here comes much more Greek. What scares me is the surety that it entails much more spending. I am sad. I may not be able to keep up and may be forced to give up and let go off this thing. (sob, sigh)
This tech isn't new - it's been around for quite a few years. You don't need the new stuff if what you have works and complies with the law and gives you pleasure.. Happy flying!
