  • Toltu Tufa is an award winning educator, publisher and psychologist. Having learnt Afaan Oromo from her father, Toltu founded Afaan Publications an initiative to help share stories and create learning resources in her father's language. From being outlawed by the Ethiopian government for 100 years to rallying a global movement to revitalize and create a language revolution, Toltu Tufa has helped to share the history and heritage of her people with the world.

    I am Oromo. I know Tultu Tufa’s work on kids Oromo language and I supported and proud of it! My grand father and mother used to speak only Afann Oromo. There was nothing called written ban of the Oromo language. He fought against the Italian invasion of Ethiopia during the 2nd world war. There was political marginalization of the Oromos by dictatorial kings and emperors predominantly Amharic speakers. And in 1974 an earth shattering Revolution erupted in Ethiopia and the entire old system uprooted. A revolution in parallel to the Russian revolution. Ethiopia unfortunately is struggling to establish a democracy. And since the revolution, Oromos , Amharas, Tigrayans ethic elites grabbed power and established bloody dictatorship… the fact is enough to mobilize for freedom and justice without trying to match what happened to the Palestinians … it is an offense to the Palestinian cause.

    I really appreciate your efforts to teach & strengthen Afan Oromo in your community. During Emperor Hailesilasie time Afan Oromo was intentionally banned at schools, government offices, courts, religious organizations, medias etc. The Oromo thanksgiving Irrecha was never recognized. But there were Oromos who tried to change that at the time. But were jailed , warned or executed at the time. Mamo Mezemer a pioneer who requested Afan Oromo be taught @ schools as one subject was first warned by the officials of the time. Jailed second time. After being freed he started teaching by his own & encouraged others to follow him but this time he was jailed & executed. Fast forward today: thanks 🙏🏽 to those who sacrificed their life & revolted against the Emperor, that era is gone with the wind. Today Afan Oromo & its culture has been strengthened to the years to come. Geleta Waqa❤

    Afaan Oromo was in fact banned systematically to subdue and dominate the oromo people and enforce the language of the Amhara people. This was because of the the emperors who emphasized the domination of Amhara culture over all of the different tribes in Ethiopia. By using the excuse that Amharic (the native language of the Amhara people) should unite the country under one language, they were able to prevent Afaan Oromo to be taught in schools and to be used in a political/federal level.
    Oromos have been able to maintain their sense of autonomy partly due to cultural practices. For a long time, Oromos had to remember and interpret their cultural history orally until they developed a writing system in the 1960s. Oromos have therefore traditionally relied on music, poetry, and dance to express their culture, preserve identity, and resist Amharic cultural hegemony. Oromo music often relates stories of how the northern ethnic group resembled white colonizers who forcibly established political systems and exploited the Oromo people. Government efforts to ban Oromo people failed because Oromos did not rely on written records to preserve their heritage.
    Threatened by the power of Oromo music, Emperor Haile Selassie persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, or even killed musicians on suspicion that they were sympathetic to Oromo nationalist sentiments. Oromo language oppression began during the government of the Derg following Selassie's death. Teachers were prohibited from teaching Oromo, and individuals who spoke it were ridiculed for not speaking the national Amharic language. Many Oromo professionals have fled the country, including musicians who have relocated to Norway. There is undeniable proof of this as Amharic is enforced to be taught in schools all over the country as a requirement while Oromifaa (the language of the most Populus people in the country backed by census that can be found online) was not. From personal experience I was forced to learn amharic in school growing up while not having any options to learn a different language other than French academically. The only way I could learn my native tongue was from my parents who thankfully taught me afaan Oromo. Very recently (a month ago) I have been told that some schools are offering students the option to pick between learning amharic and afaan oromo as an academic requirement. This is a huge improvement and a sign that we are slowly but surely moving in the right direction.
    Unfortunately, even with thousands of sources online and people who can tell you from personal experience, there are still ethnic Amharas who will swear on their life that oromifaa was never systematically banned or outlawed in ethiopia. This can sadly be seen in the comments of this very video. The lady in the video tells you from her personal experience that it was banned but the Amharas in the comments will tell you otherwise which is why I urge all who don't know to do your own research on this topic. As this has turned into a "he said, she said" scenario and you don't know who to believe.

      would you tell me what the Oromo migration did to other tribes's identity in the country

    • @Solussimba
      @Solussimba 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@samiaj1020 sure I’d love to. The oromo migration primarily taking place in the late 15th early 16th century was a migration of ethnic oromos further up north to Ethiopia from where they currently were central to southern Ethiopia. In these migrations Oromos faced many challenges such as the Ethnic Amharas who were migrating downwards at the time from their land at the very top of Ethiopia and after many battles, loses, and victories oromos were able to survive, and live alongside their 15th century adversaries today. That covers Oromo migrations now move on to the relatively small tribes that were further up north during this migration. See oromos have what they call “Gudifecaa” a term used to describe the assimilation of other tribes in where other smaller tribes could join or marry into the Oromo tribe and take up the Oromo name and culture while also keeping a peace of their own culture that they practiced before their integration into the Oromo society. Unfortunately other ethnic groups such as the Amhara don’t have any terms of assimilation such as “Gudifecaa” because their expansion was much more violent and unforgiving to the smaller tribes they expanded into. But that is a discussion for the future, now let’s address why someone could possibly reply to a comment highlighting the oppression the Oromos faced under multiple empires and regimes with “tell me what oromo migration did to the other tribe’s identity”. You say this to try to demonize oromos and in your efforts to justify the oppression and domination of Ethiopia’s culture and identity by Amharas who are the second most populous in the country after the first which are oromos. The funniest and most ironic part of your argument is what a foreigner sees when Ethiopia is mentioned to them. The ONLY things a foreigner can tell you about Ethiopia all fall under the cultural identity of the Amhara which are one of 80+ ethnicities found in Ethiopia. I just find it absolutely hilarious when you are asking me about 15th century migrations of villagers and their impact on the cultural identity of those they interacted with (they got to keep their identity via Gudifecaa hence why you see different Oromo dances instead of the one and only single dance all Amharas share the eskista) when we can clearly see today in the 21st century that all foreign associations with Ethiopia are all related to the identity of the Amhara people. So why don’t YOU tell me about the effects of the Amhara on the cultural identity of the smaller ethnic groups of Ethiopia and the identity of Ethiopia all together. There is a reason a foreigner will start to do the eskista if asked what the cultural dance of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is or will tell you the national language of Ethiopia (home to 80+ ethnicities who all speak their own language) is Amharic and it’s not due to migrations that took place in the 15th/16th century 😂 One must admit the cultural domination of a single specific ethnic identity (food/dance/language/etc) in a nation housing 80 others. So now my question to you is, tell me why Amharic is the national language in Ethiopia and how it’s related to the expansion of the Amhara people and don’t tell me it’s not or you will be lying to yourself.

      @@Solussimba then why did the other tribes also not experience this suppression? Could it be that both tribes were warring tribes and the amhara won hence predominantly amharic speakers in ethiopia? Not because y'all are victims to this day. You know who's suffering in all these inane arguments? The current locals in ethiopia. The diaspora keeps dragging stories upon stories just so you can have that "depth" for your personalities. But people are dying now because you can't stop the ones you set loose with stories of "your ancestors were victims ". Who are they avenging? I honestly don't care what language is spoken in ethiopia, we would settle for not getting killed or kidnapped or extorted within oromian state lines for not speaking the language, that's how bad it has gotten. I'm from one the tiny tribes btw, I'm not amhara just an fyi. you're both fighting a war that had a Victor centuries ago and endangering people for no good reason. እንኑርበት please leave us alone. Go stop racism or lgbtq or whatever social issue you gotta deal with in whatever Western country you live in now. ተዉን please 😢. I'm sorry if I was harsh, we're just so fed up with this nonsense. I always love to see my people here in the west regardless of what they are and I also only had to stay here in the west due to political reasons funny enough.
