What a fabulous series. A wonderful end but I wished it would keep going forever . I became truly addicted to the series with the people and the stories. A hard one to find another so entertaining.
I vaguely remember this series was very popular in our home when I was a child. Having watched all of the episodes over the last month or so, I was very impressed with the quality of the acting and attempts to accurately portray life in those days. Definitely one of the best series I have seen.
Coming to the end of the series - glad that Baines and Onedin are on good terms again. It has been a pleasure to watch this series during these times of restrictions. Admired the boats - they look so beautiful on the sea, the sets and costumes are magnificent, acting and attention to detail excellent. Thankyou for making it possible to enjoy this series.
Thank you very much for allowing me to enjoy all the 91 episodes. It is the best TV programme ever made. I watched it thrice and still willing to see few more episodes randomly. All the actors performed splendidly.
So glum to have come to the end of seeing my favourite series again after 40 years or so. Want it to go on & on for ever. Exceeded my expectations from wonderful early memories of it. First class in every way. Definitely needed another series to take things further with so many of the characters, but super-duper & THANK YOU so much for putting these up ptooti .
Just finished watching for the second time. Last was 9 months ago. One of the best series of all time. Thank you so much for the posting. My godfather owned a schooner in the 1950s and I spent two weeks sailing on it in the Marlbourgh Sounds in NZ. The best holiday of my life. The music to this was perfect. How sad to think Peter Gilmore no longer with us.
That's Tom Adams' voice we hear in this episode and the voice of the letter in the previous one, the genuine article. He was irreplaceable. One of many faces we grew to admire, but are no longer with us.
Aye, Onedin was a complete jonah for most all the way through, that was for sure, however The Onedin Line is the very best drama in history for me, enjoyed it as an 11yo, enjoyed it now. Thankyou very much for the much loved memory’s, ptooti. Favourite characters, were Letty, Anne and I’ll never forget Baines raring up. Lol. Wonderful tv, superior to the grot of today.
Onedin was a working class fella made good and unlike today’s profiteers went into the thick of his own mess to reap his profits . I agree all the main characters including Elisabeth and Robert were iconic . The series never tried to disguise the social fall out of the families profiteering as well . Today’s costume dramas from the likes of the BBC are just class affirming wall paper . The licence fee should have been abolished after the broadcast of the final episode of the Onedin line .

I noticed the ladies' rear ends becoming smaller as fashions began to approach the Edwardian era, and telephone use increased. Elizabeth started out as "Liverpool 5". I believe the saga could have gone on for much longer. Upstairs Downstairs made it to 1930. This is not the first time I have binge watched all eight seasons of The Onedin Line and it probably won't be the last. There was much more mileage left for the story and it is a shame it ended.

It’s a weak premise to think that the proprietor of an international shipping line could be thrown into jail (or rather, gaol back then) for the supposed receiving of stolen jewellery worth £50, and threatened with up to 14 years of hard labour. Sure enough, it could happen to a common man or woman, but this guy has supposedly recovered salvage ships for the government, and around the world, so you would expect him to have many high powered connections and be in a position to hire a cracking good legal team. Add to that, that on a ship that is in port, anyone could have stepped on to it at anytime and put it there - it’s hardly like there were surveillance cameras everywhere to deter people. I know that it’s only a programme and that generally you shouldn’t read too much into these things. But seeing as they have gone to great lengths to provide a plausible historical and social context for the entire run of the show, whilst weaving in many of the events of the time (in a similar way to Upstairs Downstairs, which also overlaps with much of the time frame of this show), you can’t just walk past the difficulties here. Someone like Van der Meed wouldn’t want to give evidence because it could be reasonably demonstrated that he had a reason to ruin Onedin, and had indeed stated it, so all the evidence would be coming from the people who were placed much lower in society. Although in most respects this was a great programme, the plot line here wasn’t satisfactory; it’s just an opinion, but I think that some trumped up charges of either fraud or embezzlement - or a combination thereof - would have been much more convincing.
Who else was transported back to being a little kid and hearing that music blast out of the telly every Sunday night?
