This is a beautiful example of why the rest of the world was so envious of British film-making. So well composed with equal amounts of bitter-sweetness and comedy. Beautifully filmed, great acting and lovely music to go with it.
I have a friend who lives in San Francisco, he was visiting a while back and whilst watching our TV programmes he described it them as total class, the difference he said was stark whilst the variety of our programming was delightful and quality to it's core, we can at least get something right here but really having been subjected to Netflix over lockdown I crave the calm surrounding of series from the 70's and 80's.

Thanks for showing this little gem. Great watching shame the BBC cannot come up with programs as good as this nowadays. If you like this you would probably like The Beiderbecke collection too. Also stars James Bowlam as a school teacher.
Around 7 minutes in when Alison Steadman appears, that's my road...my house is next to the one with the white van. Strangely surreal experience to leave for work each morning and have this being filmed literally on the doorstep.

Very eloquent an humorously written. With a fantastic cast, with lots of humour mixedin with a beautiful haunting an melodic score , loving filmed an produced by a great crew!

I love British films, especially this type. I was wondering if we're the only ones who thought the same thing and had to rewind it just to make sure.
The good old times of handwritten letters... Before the damn e-mails and the inept social media killed them. P.S. He should have worn elbow and knee protection with that outfit. Thank you for this beautiful movie.
I remember the OCR in Mount Pleasant. What a work of art. Able to do away with 000000s of sorters but at the time could only sort printed mail. The Japanese Postal authorities were working on a machine that COULD read handwriting. This was in the 1980s.

The Missing Postman (TV Movie 1997) - imdb 7.6 Clive Peacock is a postman in a small seaside town in Dorset. He's happy in his job and doesn't want it to change. But new technology is being introduced in his sorting office. Since he can't drive, and since deliveries by bicycle are deemed to be "old fashioned", he is offered early retirement. But he doesn't want to retire. On his last day, he collects the post from the pillar box... and decides to deliver it by hand himself as a protest. And so he starts out on a long journey by bike all around Britain, delivering each letter personally. He is hotly pursued by the police (who want to arrest him for "stealing Her Majesty's mail") and by the media (who see a great human interest story and turn him into a celebrity). But he manages to stay one step ahead of them, making many friends along the way.
Brilliant. The story is brilliant because it is true. Mail is delivered by bike in most countries I've visited. The US is an exception, and postmen there regularly die from MI's due to sedentary jobs. And the post there is insolvent for paying for gas powered vehicles. It's true also because you meet interesting people on a bike, not in a shiny new car. The paparazzi, the Colombo cop, and all the rest are also brilliant story parts. How did I miss this? Thanks for posting!

Also he was good as Jack Ford in When The Boat Comes in and as Figgis in Only When I Laugh.

Great drama ,that was aired when i was at school ,and all the kids used try and copy the Geordie accents.
That was on TH-cam about 2 years ago all the series but that got taken down for copyright.
How about the Likely Lads?
Just watched the Christmas special which brought me here
