Back in the late sixties my cousin and I spent the weekend at my grandparents house here in Willow Springs. It turned into two weeks because we had so much snow. My grandfather raised hogs and of course one had pigs in the middle of all of that. We were drying pigs off and placing them under heat lamps at 3 am. Those pigs brought more at the sale barn that spring than he had ever seen before. I think he paid me $35 for helping. It was the most money that I had ever seen!

I like Sarah's comment, “And, I’m trying to look chipper about it.” Dallas is expecting 0 degree temps for Monday and 6 inches of snow. The entire country is shivering right now. I hope everyone's animals are okay through this. I know you are freezing but I especially appreciate this longer video about all the animals. I miss these.
So cool that Gardener's Supply sent you those trees and plants. I bought Jewel sweet potatoes this week and set them up to grow slips. My husband saw me with them and said, “What are you doing with those perfectly good sweet potatoes?” I’m hoping I can grow them in bags. It's an experiment for me.

A word of caution about bringing your fruit trees and berries into the Sprout House. If the plants have reached their chilling hours requirement, which is different for every plant, they will start to break dominancy. The buds will start to swell even though you might not be able to tell with the naked eye. Then if the plants are placed back outside the normal winter temperatures will kill those buds. The average chilling temperature is 32 to 45 degrees. A yellow delicious apple only needs 600 to 700 chilling hours, which is 25 to 29 days. Love your videos. Stay warm!!

The chicken house where I collected the eggs and at the end was a taller building that housed the mule. I have had opportunities fall thru my finger at the chance to live the life I loved, but due to back problems, I lost my dream of self survival. I let AOT of weeds nearby y raised?beds thrive and thwy hosted predator bugs that actually somewhat controlled the population of pest bugs. I definitely saw lots of bad bugs but i was still able to grow hundreds of lbs of squashes before the plants died out.

We are in central Wisconsin and it gets cold as you know. During the polar vortex a couple years ago it was the coldest place on earth - literally. We used plastic utility tarps to block any draft in our barn. It really worked and got our donkeys, sheep and chickens through. I just bought utility tarps and used a staple gun. We now put up tarps in some parts of the barn just to be ready. Using them this week.

Watch out for frozen waterlines. Frost depth is said to be 24” around you. But the combination of “looks like 24” to me” and these extended super cold days, waterlines will be freezing like crazy. We are getting ready to build around Springfield. 36” at least, especially in rocky soil which has less insulating value. Snow will help insulate the ground.

I live in Vancouver Canada where it rarely snows. We've had a wet rainy winter which is typical for us. And then a couple of days ago the arctic blast hit. It's snowing right now and we are expecting 4-6 inches of the white stuff today. What my husband and I did when we planted strawberries was to put them into a container. It saved them from getting eaten by slugs and other strawberry loving bugs. The strawberries were beautiful and sweet.
