I remember that we tried for months to get into that damn tower.
Old games didn't have good AI, often because the computing power back then was extremely limited (even by standards 20 years ago), not because the programmers didn't know how to code.

I consider TDR to be unfairly underrated. Driving mechanic and AI was actually better than Carma 2. I run it on my WIN10 and I don't have issues, as the Jonathan has. I got my copy form GOG - maybe their version is more stable.
It's nice to hear from someone with some sense when talking about Carma MD. I've played all the Carma games and it's by far the best. People complained that the car handling was floaty and unwieldy when it doesn't feel any different to how it did in Carma 1, if anything Carma's handling is actually realistic and doesn't hold your hand around corners like modern racing games.
Hoping for a new Carma entry in the future.
Yeah, I love the car handling in carmageddon.
If it was easier, it would also make crashing into opponents easier and the gameplay would suffer from it.
If you never miss an opponent then you're never happy you crashed into one.
I think Carmageddon 2 is the best of the series, then the original one, which I still occasionally play on my iPhone (at one time it was in the App Store for a moment and it still runs on the latest iOS) and then Max Damage. There are some quite hard parts in it that really make the game more serious than it should be
Yeah imo 2 was the best one. The OG Carmageddon gets a ton more praise due to starting it all, but 2 is, to me, a refined version of 1, in every single way. More cars, way bigger maps, a ton more stuff to do...
Personally, C2 is my favorite. Best levels and best cars. Steering is absurdly unrealistic, but that's the part of the charm :D
I don't mind the missions, I feel like people give them far too much hate. I mean, a dumb 11 year old me was able to beat the game.
That's great to hear. I worked on Carma2 as an Artist. There were only about 5-6 of us at the time and it was alot of work. It was my first game and I always felt C1 was in some ways a better game. Carma 2 was rushed at the end, SCI wanted it out and I always felt we didn't have time to polish it. Even today it's hard to stand back and judge how good/bad it is. I still see all the little mistakes and things we wanted to add, fix, polish. It's great that people still remember it and loved it at the time. Thanks

TDR was my favorite growing up. I had no issues playing it on the old computer it was supposed to be played on. I thought it had good balance when destroying other cars. (Unlike MD which seems like you need specific power ups to do any damage at all.) I also liked the missions and how they tied to the story and progression through maps. Each map was unique and fun.
not enough people to run over in that one... also some of the levels were weird. but otherwise it did have police.. that was fun

To me the most disappointing thing about CII was the look of it. The grainy visuals of the first gave everything an unpleasant, nasty feeling whereas the super lo-res textures in C2 that were smoothed out beyond all reason made it all look very sterile and boring. The lighting was bright and flat as well, which didn't help matters.
I totally agree. And I also preferred C1's pedestrians as, blocky and low resolution as they are, they still looked much better than C2's blocky polygons. C2's engine (whether for speed reasons, or because the programmers didn't want to bother putting too much detail in) were just too simplistic, I thought.

Just name me another open map game with a competely free "game editor level" damage model, I'll wait.

chiming in to say i was OBSESSED... O B S E S S E D with carma 2 in the late 90s, early 2000s. i played that game to death and beyond. that was my first intro to the carma franchise and it was just.. the best stress relief ever. i had all the cheats memorized, i couldnt wait to get home from work and college to just get lost in killing and speeding around some days. i cant play it nowadays because my system simply wont support it, and theres a huge nostalgia factor to even just the sound effects.. like if i watch some youtube vids of people playing it. i couldnt rave about this version enough, i just loved it that much haha. i tried playing the first one, and it is like you said, primitive. but i totally get the groundbreaking effect of it for its time. and it is indeed an original classic. i also had the 3rd one. and tried to play it for about a week in the early 2000s too. lets just say that definitely deserved its ranking. last summer i was poking around and found max damage and have also been obsessed with that one ever since. i had no idea they released a new one as i havent been pc gaming in forever. now im obsessed with it. and beamng, and definitive editions of gta. in max damage, i like all the elements they carried over from the originals. i know some people were complaining that its just.. a ton of space and not much to do in said space.. but thats not the point of the game honestly. youre there to kill everything if youre anything like me. i dont care that its not super interactive in this space. im looking for people to hunt down lol. i like that they made max damage a bit harder than the original (with how powerups can be used only if youre facing that opponent, and that they also can get those powerups). i also like all the side missions in each level, that you dont have to finish if you dont want to. fox and hounds, ped chase, car crusher.. great additions. i dont like that its smaller than carma 2. there were what, like 10 plus maps to that one? instead of max using the same map with a different race layout or opponents like 5x. all in all, this game was so much of my early 20s and i still look back fondly at it. i love that i can play a new version nowadays and it satisfies me the way carma 2 did.

for me what was the fruit of the cake for me was the "inner" camera seeing the pilot expressions
Here, Carmageddon 2 was the shit. A few dozen kids, we would gather in the first internet station in my city in the late 90s and play it lan. Essentially, it was my first ever multiplayer experience.
I'm always hearing about people having issues running TDR 2000, personally even on a fairly modern PC the only issue I had was the Mip Filter crash so I've no idea if I got lucky or if people are exaggerating. Personally I enjoy it the most mainly because C2 and C1 are such a pain to run on a modern PC without weird resolution patches( Also the mobile remake of C1 needs putting on PC, if it was on PC it would definitely be the definitive version). Max Damage is alright as well although it always feels like it was more optimised for controllers which is a shame
You didn't mention the fact that getting new vehicles is a lot easier and dumber than in the first 2 Carmageddons. I loved how the first 2 Carmageddons handled upgrading. It's sad to see the reboot just make everything easier.
It's harder in the reboot.to get upgrades in carma classic,you had to get money,and once you buy an upgrade it's on for all cars.in MD you just gotta collect coins,however each car must be upgraded separately,making it take more time.also getting cars is the same in the classic and MD.wreck them once they're stealworthy.idk ab carma 2,haven't played it

I agree with all the reviews and comments on each game. But I loved every single one of them as I played them as they were release. C2 and tdr were fun. Need to try MD.
Payed the Original game on mobile version on hard difficult and cleared all maps from pedestrians, learned where the barrel with the zombies on the map were.

I saw my friend play C1 when I was 10. Thought it was amazing. I bought C2, but becuase my PC didn't have any 3D compatible "tech" it looked like C1. Hours and hours went into it. I had friends from school at my house, we would play it. The missions were annoying as fuck.
Later on I got to actually play C1 and damn is that a more enjoyable game. The sprite deaths have a lot more character. The screams are funny, the AI is somehow better, doesn't roam around and get into horrible places you can't get to.
Carmageddon and Go Postal are some of the best dark classics.
When games were more about fun than looks.

Love the video. I'd say I love Carma 2, though I use a cheat to skip those story missions. The levels are awesome and the cars are pretty cool.

Have to disagree on 2 having a better presentation than 1.
2 has a much too bright colour palette which feels a bit cartoony to me
1 has such a dark dystopian vibe going on. Compare the cops on 1 Vs 2 same thing. Just my opinion ofc.
My fav is the original, I spent countless hours in it. The tricks you could do in high speed were insane thanks to crazy physics, I don't think any other racing game comes even close. I was disappointed in the sequel because of the bland graphics and blocky 3d pedestrians, sprite pedestrians of the original worked much better IMO, but the sequel seems to be the fan favorite. I helped kickstart the last game but it was a trainwreck for years before they managed to make it right in the end but it didn't hook me.
About 2 weeks ago, I hooked up my Sim Rig to C1. It worked to an extent, but like anything Carma..... steering is not pleasant. I went back to my controller rather quickly.
Carmageddon Max Damage was truly the great experience I was hoping for after TDR2000. Even though it took entirely too long to come out, it somehow felt incredibly authentic to the first 2 games, while expanding on the ideas and details about as much as possible.
The ONLY thing I would have maybe added to Max Damage would be to make the first game playable from the main menu.

We were playing the original carmageddon in our litle multiplayer house back in the 90s, the game wasn't even 3d back then, but we had so much fun playing it 😊
I played og carmageddon a LOT, I think i cleared a map of pedestrians once as its an extreme chore unless you snag a powerup that reveals them on the map.

Putting 1 above 2 is strange. 2 had so much more stuff to have fun with: the car physics, trying to cleave or squeeze cars, ped physics, more fun powerups, secret areas...
I personally could never get into 2 just because i really prefer 1's visual style and these perhaps superficial aspects of why it's so satisfying to play. The original may be a very janky and somewhat lacking game, but it really nailed the looks, sounds and feels of everything.
I think the technical limitations ironically contributed to that a lot - the resolution forces everything to be a lot more "in your face" and encourages to make all the elements crisp and vibrant for readability (and that goes for both the environment and the UI), the 2d pedestrian sprites have so much character and charm which I sadly don't get from the 3d models (also the pratcam is so iconic). And it's in just the right spot realism- and detail-wise where I can fully embrace this goofy gory arcade fun without it getting disturbingly realistic or unfun and boring.
No disrespect though, I just wish I could experience all the gameplay/technical improvements and additions with more of the same saturated aesthetic, no later games hit the same spot for me :(
Here's my view on the subject: I would put Carmageddon II and Max Damage ex æquo first, the original second and TDR2000 stays dead last. Why? Because Carmageddon II takes what is best in the original and takes it to another level. Max Damage does the same with the first two titles and does it well but it didn't run on certain hardware setups, rather high end at that time actually, and to this day the devs don't give a flying duck about it. The original takes close second because it's a solid performer all round and has these funny onboard cam animations, but that's all too little to say it's the best. And as to TDR2000, I had no problem whatsoever running it on a Windows XP laptop, in fact I'm playing it on it right now, but it's a mediocre game anyway, it tries to recreate the experience of its predecessors and enhance it with some twists but it can't change the fact that the handling is wooden and handling is rather important in a game that's all about chasing and/or running away.
All in all, when I feel like wreaking havoc I launch Carmageddon II and enjoy it thoroughly.
I prefer the original Carmageddon because for me, it is easier to play and finish.
Splat Pack is a bit harder ... particularly if The Cops Special Forces Suppressor is not always visible to destroy and steal in-game.
("Surreal Thing" is the race this vehicle should be but it only appears after you've wasted at least two normal cop cars and is tricky to get to).
TIP: the original Carmageddon and Splat Pack can be completed successfully and IMO are far more enjoyable if Max Damage is selected as the player-driver at the beginning of both games instead of Anna.
Carmageddon 2 is my favourite followed by the original❤️

I hope Max Damage wasn't the end of the game. It's perfect, but if they refreshed the graphics for modern hardware, like Ray tracing, that would be amazing.
When I was 15 16 everybody (who cares about) talked about C2.... a couple of missions were somewhat annoying (i remember one that made me crazy)...but with cheats it was soooo fun. #iwishicouldflyrightuptothesky (it was a cheat command)

Funny, I didn't have any problems running TDR2000... I bought it roughly around the time it was released. I remember enjoying it for the most part, but it certainly had some very frustrating points. It may not run well NOW on current gen hardware, but that's the case for most old games. TDR was the one with the Iron Maiden sound track I believe.
Honestly, the driving/control in all carmageddon games is absolutely trash.

Carma 2 is still a beta game, it was rushed for the hoiday release and they were never able to put all the stuff they wanted. its also the first game to have ragdoll physics, also people talk about Carma 2 because of the amount of mods it had

I have completed carmageddon 1 and 2 so many times i lost count. Carma 3 is so bad i never played but few races. Abysmal game
was really surprised seing CN on the third spot,was thinkinhg this would be an average series rating video hence Reincarnation/Max Damage on 3rd with CN and 1 being like "really had hard time to decide which place to top spot,lads."

Just one thing, what's the issue about a game taking longer to finish? When did THAT become a negative trait on any game? Games shouldn't take too long to finish? Since when? I remember people praising the Play Station era of Final Fantasy games because of how long the games lasted. A game having more CDs was literally a tell that the game was going to be epic. In the NES/Famicom era, cartridges weight was a measure of how good the game was, because it probably lasted longer or had more complex and elaborated gameplay. You play games just to be done with them? WTF is that all about? You never played a game you enjoyed so much you wished it never ended? Man I kinda feel sorry for you, if that's the case.
I could agree about TDR 200, but in Carmageddon II. Cant watch so much i DO NOT AGREE ABOUT.

Sorry, but no, Carma 1 was the best, is the best, and always will be the best. Max Damage was a pretty bad remake of the original. 2 and 3 were just utter garbage.
