  • I tried minimalism for 30 days. This idea was heavily influenced by Matt D'Avella and The Minimalists, so I wanted to try it out for myself.

    I feel like you missed the point a little. You can be a minimalist and still have the things that you like and need (not just two pairs of pants and limited amount of socks) it’s more about getting rid of what you don’t need and keeping only what you need, you like and what brings you joy.

      Thanks for the clarification! I'm not 100% sure where the line for becoming a minimalist is, although I suppose it's unique to every individual. I definitely resonate with the overall idea of minimalism and will be applying the principles to my life, but I personally wouldn't identify as a minimalist.

      @phoenixdowner I think you nailed it there. Minimalism looks different to different people. According to the hardcore bunch, I have way too much stuff, even though I live pretty simply. So what? I like the things I have. I do go through things every so often to see what is still 'working' for me. Like now, I am having a 'clothing issue'. I am not happy with a lot of my clothes and need to go through them all again to see what I truly want to keep and what will get donated to the local women's crisis center ( I always encourage people to donate their clothes to a shelter rather than just chuck them - but WASH THEM FIRST).

    I've been a minimalist since the late 90s after reading the book "Your money or your life" It made a world of difference in how I look at money time and energy as well as things. It is a journey that changes with chapters in life. While working I had more things but worked until I had the minimal amount that worked for me. I still had a couple collections that weren't as minimalist as I could have gone but were well organized and used often enough to justify keeping them. After retiring I got rid of all but one collection which is much smaller than before and sentimental items along the way. It is so freeing to have less stuff. After seeing wildfires and disasters where people lose everything it puts into perspective minimalism. Having less means less to try and save or need to replace. Less to worry about, clean, move, heat or cool or work around. Having enough of the right things makes everything easier. I have traveled to the middle east in july/aug and the EU for 3 months and both with only carry on suitcase. It really brings out how little we need to function anywhere in any weather and still be happy with so little. It is not for everyone or everyone at every time in their life but it is incredible once you find the minimalist balance thats right for you and let go of what you don't use or need to function well. It does require a lot more than a 30 day challenge to really sort out fully.

    If there are any minimalists out there who would like to share any insights, I'd love to hear more about your thoughts and experiences. I'm not a minimalist but it's a lifestyle I'm interested in learning more about. My understanding is everyone will have slightly different lifestyles and definitions for what would qualify as minimalism, so if there's anything you can share or clarify it'd be helpful for myself and everyone else.

      Why hold on to that camera gear you'll never use? I'm sure there is someone locally who wants to learn photography but can't afford anything. Why not give it to them, feel good about being generous, and feel less stress about having useless clutter?

    • @JoshWiniarski2
      @JoshWiniarski2  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great idea! Most of the gear that I don't use aren't big ticket items (I don't have an extra camera or lenses lying around). A lot of the stuff is like old SD cards, a mini tripod, filters, cables, mounts, pouches, clamps, and stuff like that. I agree though, it could definitely find a better home and help someone just getting started.

      I started pursuing minimalism in 2019. I would suggest gradually reducing things that you own. It should be a progression and not done so quickly. I mean, you do crawl before you run. Decluttering is also ongoing. Minimalism isn't a one and done type of lifestyle. Some items will be easy to let go of while others will take time and thought. Also doing it with the 333 challenge was too extreme of a process. That would surely backfire on anyone wanting to pursue minimalism.
      Personally, getting rid of excess was a major game changer for me. But as I stated above, it was gradual. I never misplace my belongings, my home is easier to maintain, I don't waste anything not even food because I only bring into the house what I am actually going to use. I save more money because I shop from a wish list and I don't randomly purchase stuff-even if it is on sale or 'a good deal'. Minimalism has made me a more conscious consumer in terms of fair trade, sustainability and what is ecocentric. I have no regrets about getting rid of a large percentage of belongings.
      You could look at it this way. You know the saying that you use 20% of your belongings 80% of the time? Why not just use that 20% 100% of the time and get rid of the rest. Sounds logical doesn't it?

      Everyone has their own definition of minimalism & it varies depending on that person. Define what minimalism means to you and find your why.
      I started in 2019 and it's made my life easier for me. There is a lot of great videos on youtube.

      As seniors, we are very focused on keeping our home as uncluttered, spacious and clean as possible. We try not to collect meaningless items and are careful to avoid buying clutter. The older we get, the more we realize that most of our "things" will eventually be in a landfill or collecting dust at the back of a junk/thrift store. Our children and relatives will be forced to deal with all of it and we wouldn't want to burden them with it. If you stand in your home and look around and realize that every single thing you see was once your money and time, it makes you realize how much of your precious life you've devoted to meaningless things. Minimalism (however you define it for yourself) provides an empowering sense of freedom to embrace a life that is not devoted to caring and maintaining "things". There is nothing sadder than witnessing the living conditions of seniors at the end of a life of hoarding and collecting. We've had to become uncomfortably direct with family members regarding gifting us "things" that we will just bring to the donation shop at our landfill.

    Thanks for this chill video. IMHO, the point of all of the minimalist experiments/rules/hacks whatever you want to call them, such as 333, are to clarify what's meaningful to you. Minimalism is not about a number, it's not about depriving yourself. Just because you value a niche jacket and various backpacks, doesn't mean you're not a minimalist. And it doesn't mean that the experiment failed or didn't work for you. Those objects add value to your life because of the activities that are important to you. You know they add value because you would buy them again. If seeing the video games you don't play stresses you out, put them away in a box or cabinet where you won't see them. And maybe think about what function they serve in your life - do they help you feel connected to people or memories of good times in the past? Maybe you could part with half of them and still have the function served by fewer of them. Or maybe you want to keep all of them, if each one serves you, then you can still be a minimalist according to the definition of having what gives value to you in your life. To reduce visual clutter but still enjoy them, you could take one to three of them out at a time to display, and switch them out for different ones every now and then. Since visual clutter stresses you out, and you're definitely not alone in that, try searching youtube for 1 minute tidy and 5 minute tidy. There are awesome videos about creating habits that literally take a minute or less and have a cumulative effect for a more peaceful home. You honestly don't have a lot of stuff - it just seems like a lot because you don't have any storage. You have few enough things that a few baskets or bins near your desk could make a big difference for you. When everything has a specific place and you take a minute every day to put everything away, it'll be nice for you. Good luck, Josh! I wish you all the best.

    I did it sort of. We can all do it but it's hard as you say. Being in USAF barracks living and going out to sea on a carrier you ain't got much space. I was surprised w/ even in the ship we're allowed to store extra carp in a room in piles. Supposed to send home. If it can't fit under your bunk or foot locker, U gotta send it home. And U right, we just buy it again.
    I agree, we like having access to stuff. I found I not mind shipping it home but know I have it to have sent in as I need or say I have it.

    Once I had zero dollars in my pocket and had to wait on a friend downtown who was taking me to lunch. so I strolled around freely till the hour: I can't explain the liberty I felt not having to fear getting robbed. I was swinging my arms freely around everyone (I think I frightened a thief or two).
