  • I've been avoiding this challenge for a LONG time... but I think it's time that I finally try out minimalism. 30 days of living with 4 plates, 5 shirts, and 2 coffee mugs may make me a little crazy, but in the end, will I come to enjoy the simplicity of it all? Or will my husband throw a bowl at me?
    Well quit reading the description already and just watch the video and find out!!!!!!!

    Dishwashers actually save water! They use 4 gallons for each cycle. And running water uses 4 gallons for every 2 minutes. Or at least that's what it says on the back of our dishwasher soap pods...haha. so maybe you could run it after lunch too! Love that you collaborated with dawn on this! I love her! Of course the dishwasher tablets tell you that dishwashers use less water. Not all of us fill our sinks to hand wash. Whatever works for you, do it. 😊 the point is don't get too worried. Hand wash or dish wash, just get those dishes clean and back in the cupboard.

    • @user-co9cr7js3w
      @user-co9cr7js3w 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ah5721 You shouldn't rinse before putting it in the dishwasher, only scrape the food off. As rinsing doesn't make your plates cleaner, it does the opposite. Detergents are designed to cling to food particles, without a surface to stick to, your dishes won’t get as squeaky clean. And with newer dishwashers, they won’t wash your dishes for very long if the sensors in the machine don’t detect much dirt in the water. Not only that, but rinsing also wastes a lot of water.

    It definitely is not a one size fits all, I only have 1 fork/knife/bowl/plate/glass etc. BUT I have about 30 “tupperwares” because I meal prep weekly for 5 days of meals & snacks so I genuinely require that many, minimalism is about making it work for YOU. I’m low income so while there is only one toothpaste in my house at any one time, you better believe I have a backstock box in the garage with the extras when they were on offer
    It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to improve your life for the better to be worth it :)

    So, the one thing I just can’t go along with with Dawn is putting the lids on the leftover containers and only keeping the number you can have with the lids on. I work outside the home and take my lunch every day. I cook only 2 to 3 times per week, and I use containers like that to store the food for my husband to eat when I am gone. At times, we use every single container I have. They are neatly nested in my cupboard with the lids conveniently stored to the side. I’ve had people comment on how neatly my leftover containers are stored, so I do not consider that cupboard to be cluttered.

    I’m not a fan of minimalism, but I do think most of us benefit from decluttering. The impractical arbitrary hard limits aren’t for me. I want to do my laundry weekly- so I need at least 8 outfits. I want to do dishes daily- so I need multiple plates. When minimalism/reducing becomes an identity instead of a tool, then it’s probably hurting more than helping.

    • @TruFlyFox
      @TruFlyFox ปีที่แล้ว +65

      You just described minimalism. While I am not sure why this video put hard limits on things, most that I have read about is keeping what you NEED, USE and LOVE. If you need 8 outfits and wear them, then that is perfect. If you need an 8 piece setting rather than a 4...perfect. You find what works and what doesn't.

    • @janspence6010
      @janspence6010 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@TruFlyFox it's because the minamilist mum puts hard limits. For example, one towel for person. Great in theory. What if you have guests coming every 3 months? Do you buy a new towel or 2, once and store it (money saving) or do you buy it, clean it, and donate it every 3 months (most agree a waste)

    • @lifemyway200
      @lifemyway200 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @Jan Spence the minimal mom is also clear to keep things you use occasionally, but not regularly, packed elsewhere.
      So you keep extra things like towels and extra dishes packed in a box for when you do have company. Her point is keeping your inventory down in what you use daily to be able to manage your surroundings easier.
      Im single/no kids and while minimal, i still have more than what Dawn suggests per person.

    I love the idea of a 30 day challenge. You can pack things away and determine what works and what doesn’t. My quess is that it’s unlikely that you would pull everything back out.
    I often look at 1, 3, 7 or 10 when considering how many I need. Just 1? 3 = 1 to wash, 1 to wear, one to spare? 7 = 1 for each day of the week? 10 = cuz that’s how we count?? Doesn’t always work, but gives me a good starting point.

    👏👏👏 Great video! SO impressive that you did all that decluttering work with a baby! 🥳Two things I wanted to mention - I don’t think Dawn has a dishwasher, so having fewer plates, cups etc. probably means several mini-hand washing sessions rather than one marathon one after dinner. Also, when people give you hand-me-downs, try to go through them as they come in the door - you will likely find things that don’t suit your taste, are already too small, will be uncomfortable for your child, etc. (I sometimes saw hand-me-down clothes that were new, had been received as gifts and had buttons down the back, scratchy fabric, etc.) Be ruthless! It’s kind of people to give you hand-me-downs, but if they aren’t useful, donate them so they can bless someone else!

    Thank you The Awkward Mom and The Minimal Mom for this fun video about the 30-day experiment with minimalism. I found Dawn on youtube about six months ago and have been using her techniques for decluttering. I feel the same way. The more I declutter, the more I want to get declutter even more. In the process I have felt an awesome (freeing) mind shift where I want to live with less. I have a ways to go, but each time I get rid of stuff, it helps keep the momentum to get ride of more. Thanks to Dawn, I view everything in my home now as inventory, and I don't want anymore inventory. When I drive by the large new homes being built in my neighborhood, I have no envy. In fact I get a little dizzy thinking about all the inventory those homes will have in them and how much it will take to maintain. Been there, done that, wouldn't do it again. The kitchen is the area where I do have more than what is minimal. I have kept a lot of my plates and bowls. I like them. We use a lot of them regularly and they don't build up in the sink. I also have a lot of storage containers, but this video has given me the motivation to try the 30-day experiment with getting rid of at least half of them, plates and cups, too. With just my husband and I we have a lot of leftovers because we cook a lot at home, and we tend to eat different foods. We also cut up a lot of fruit and vegetables that go in containers, so we do use a lot of them. We now we have 11 in our refrigerator, 2 on the counter and a couple in the freezer. Most of that food gets eaten each week, and we clean out any old food on garbage night. The rest of the containers are organized (I keep all the lids on top of the stacked containers or on the side. It's a system that has worked well for me for years, but I'm open to new ideas and experimenting to really see how much I actually need. It's ok for each person to decide if there is an area of their home where they want a few more things (like Dawn and her throw pillows : ) as long as it's not stressing them out, and they enjoy the item/use it. Thanks again!

    I’m 63. I’ve been a “minimalist” from the day I had some free agency. My mom said I’d throw the furniture out if she didn’t stop me. I don’t believe in the counting method but the space method. Designate the space once the space is filled, then it’s one in one out.

    I love Dawn, and I love that you admit to watching her videos!
    "No, I'm Dawn! I have throw pillows!" 😆😆
    I found her during the pandemic (2020) and after watching for a long time, got the courage to declutter. It is a work in progress, but I love this idea of a trial period.
    By the way, I'm pretty sure your husband would say he NEEDS his beard stuff. lol.

    The term "Clutter Threshold" is used by Dawn, Dana K White, and/or Cas from Clutterbug (the trifecta of home inventory management). It is the amount of stuff you can manage and it is different for different people. So, your okay with more plates, spatulas and towels. That still fits the definition of minimal living. So now we can call you the Awkward Minimal Mom -- LOL. Love your channel and your content.

      I have a question for you, I have excess everything, but it seems like with so few clothes, dishes, and towels, you would be washing daily?? Is that what you do? I need help! 🤪

    • @kathysaoed
      @kathysaoed ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@truthseeker9075 I’ve been doing this for a few years. I do laundry one day a week. I have enough clothes that I can make it through one week. I have two towels per person because I find one gets gross using it all week. I also have two sets of sheets for the kids, just in case. So I do one load of sheets, one load of towels. A light load and a dark load.
      I have one place setting per person and two extra for guests. Same for glasses and silverware. Each person washes their own dishes after each meal. I have one of those little brushes in the ceramic dish that I keep filled with water and a tiny squirt of dish soap (which I change daily). It literally takes less than 1minute to wash, dry, and
      put away the dishes.
      Following Minimal Moms advice, yes, I have to wash after each meal, but I never have a huge stack of pans and storage containers because so don’t own a huge stack!
      You can do this! Good luck❤

    From the very start it's the Collab I didn't know I needed in my life! 😆 ❤ Also, running the dishwasher with just those dishes will use less water than hand washing. Try plugging the sink while you hand wash to see how much water you're actually using. This has inspired me to try it when my ex finally moves out 😁

    • @thesender6321
      @thesender6321 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always plug the sink. I rinse into the wash water and never use anywhere near as much water to hand wash and rinse as is claimed. I have never met anyone who doesn’t put the plug in the sink (or use a dishpan) when washing dishes by hand. This is a straw man argument by the dishwasher manufacturers.

    I keep less of some things so I can keep more other things. It depends on what you are in to. I have a lot of books and canning supplies. Whereas I am not really into clothes and accessories, so I am more minimalist on that stuff. There is no way I could do 1 dish and towel per person. Only running the dishwasher once a day and washing towels once a week, frees me up to do other things.
