    They both sound in the same ballpark, but i think what sets them apart mostly without stating the obvious is the lack of presence control and negative feedback loop.
    I've built both personally and i think they both sound great just as they are.

    The Friedman JJ JR is like the PT. But, with the presents in higher gain that you’re looking for. The JJ 100 can do anything that Marshall 800 can do and more. It’s a Multi trick pony.. I have both...

    Lot of people vote Marshall I see. I have had quite a few and have a few Early JCM800s and I can tell you they don't have near the gain a PT will have. Here a Solid state distortion pedal is used in front of a tube amp. A stock 800 will never have the gain of a PT without a pedal.

  • @baam5150
    @baam5150 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I completely agree Re: the PT20’s EQ. The lack of a presence control well…leaves the tone lacking a bit! But I can see how many people also like that aspect of the PT20’s tone. It’s a more polite version of a Marshall-style amp. However, I miss the extra bite of being able to fine tune the treble/presence. In order to combat this lack of a presence control with my PT20, I find a clean boost with an EQ tilted a bit towards the treble side helps quite a bit.

    I've got an early PT, before they added the gain switch. The only way I can describe it is as a dirt box. An exceptional one, but it only does dark, brown dirt. But, once you help it out a little with a boost and gate AND then throw an EQ in the loop to add back all the high end cut, it's pretty phenomenal and something you could easily travel with. So long as you don't miss having anything reminiscent of a clean channel. The whole amp is just a dirty channel lol.

    My Friedman Wildwood Pink Taco sounds nothing like the Pink Taco in this video. Mine gets just almost as loud as my 50 watt JCM800 2204, and sounds phenomenal. I dont really need any distortion pedal unless it's a Fuzz, otherwise my EP Booster sends it over the top.
    The trick is taking a lot of time setting the amp as it is very sensitive, took me a couple of weeks of constant knob turning, but it was well worth it, my Pink Taco sounds more Marshally than my actual Marshall. You know how Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" sounds in the intro with the bass and guitar? Well I have both sounds out of my Pink Taco. It's a beast, even just being a 20 watter.

    About to watch. Prediction? Nordic 2203 kicks it's arse. Edit: Kicked arse? No, but the 2203 cut thru more with more clarity. I do not know how to describe tone. It was just more good. I expected it to be even more more good though
    There is a combo version of a JCM800 2210 on our local listings. Serviced and ready to go. About 1000 euros in NZ money. I am tempted, but hopefully it does not sell while I try to raise the couple of hundy I'm short. I wonder what they are like and if they can do the SD1 thing right. I read they are between a 2203 and a Silver Jubilee, but that was just some random yank in a forum saying it.
    My fav boosted 2203 tone is Vivian Campbell with Dio. It snarls (I am confused whether he used a DS1 or a SD1 though. In a recent video I think he said DS1, but I read back then it was SD1. I dunno. Try both I guess. X2N or Super Distortion bridge pup I think).
    There is also a JMP 2204, but I'd have to sell some pedals to get that one.
    I found a pic of Randy's 10 band EQ supposedly with his settings. Boosting 200-500Hz, i.e., lower mids and a bit of cut higher up and lower down. I tried similar and it kind of works. I am useless at EQ pedals, so it was a handy find. There is something going on with Randy's pick attack that is tricky to get. Kind of a chewy, thick, almost rubbery sound, but with lots of bite still. Another EQ setting I want to work out is Dave Murray. He gets that smooth sound with his hammer on, pull offs.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    No presence on the Friedman was the first obvious thing that I missed on this track. What a weird design choice!
    I'm also wondering " will there ever be a video where the JCM 800 doesn't win?" To be honest I don't think so. Maybe when you start playing other types of music but for this kind of agressive metal it is and has always been the favorite weapon of choice in my book.

      It's not just a presence thing, all Friedman amps are designed to sound polite, smooth, very record-like, and they deliver in a small room. Problem is when you compare them with a very abrasive, raw, no-smoothness, no frills, uncompressed amp, or throw them in a band mix.

    Not even close Euge, Marshall chomped the taco. How do you feel the 20w 800 would do against it? Too bad you couldn't compare the two at the same time. Congrats on your 10k!

  • @christianutter5383
    @christianutter5383 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thx for this! Pt was a bit lacking in highs. Is this something you would have taken care of with a Presence tweak if it had one? Not enough juice on Treble pot?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome man! Yes indeed since with the presence you're able to dial the overall "high shelf" of the amp 'cos the treble is just a volume control for a pre set high frequency curve that the amp designer has designed :-).

    What cab would you use with a Marshall JCM800?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like my Fryette Fat Bottom with Eminence P50E speakers but one can’t really go wrong with any good cab (Marshall, Mesa, ENGL etc.) loaded with Celestion V30s or 25 watt Greenbacks. The Eminence speakers I have are kinda like a mix of those two Celestions.
      Many Marshall cabs have the 75watt Celestions as a stock speakers but I’ve never cared for those that much.

Out a matter of interest (you may have covered this topic on another video before) do you run whatever amp your recording through a speaker cab so you get the guitar/amp interaction while playing or is it just straight into the computer and back through monitors of some sort ?
