I really enjoyed arranging this one because it is truly a VGM classic.
The musicians in this arrangement defenitely did an awesome job. Especially those horns. The horns part I wrote in this is pretty ambitious with all those high notes, haha! Casey did a great job in leading the horns on.
I approached the reharm for this in a very "fusion-y" way with the iconic bVI - bVII vamp. As you can hear in the middle of the song I used the vamp to key change downwards but making it sound like it modulated upwards. I really really like that approach in arranging so much.

I've been doing a 365 Days of Music challenge, and I chose this for Day 201! Thought I'd share the little writeup I did on it:
Day 201: "Mario Kart 64: Rainbow Road (Fusion Rock Arrangement)"
Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road is one of the best track themes in Mario Kart history. In racing game history. It carries with it so much dignity and finality and determination all at once. Mario Kart 8 took the original track and turned up the energy levels. And this arrangement shifts it into overdrive.
The fusion rock is definitely something Mario Kart 8 fans should already be familiar with. This sounds right at home with the modern Mario Kart style while simultaneously being something greater and more powerful. This arrangement blares with energy and passion in its blasting trumpet and sax and guitar, energetic drums, frolicking synth leads, gorgeous keys, and SICK BASS. That's Nico Mendoza, everybody! Covers from his channel were featured on Days 133, 134, and 138. Was very cool to see him here!
It's so hard to list a favorite part. Unlike the actual racetrack from Mario Kart 64, this tune is ever-changing and super dynamic. There's a soft piano and sax section around 2:57 which is so tranquil and gorgeous (and let's not forget that beautiful little guitar slide and the lil chimes -- it's the little pieces that make a beautiful whole y'all). But the rest of the song is super energetic and fun -- like 200cc but in music. I really want to race to this.
It's so hard to pick a favorite part. But I am a sucker for a good slap bass, and when it kicks in the second half of the "chorus" (most notable at 3:35 for a full chorus), I just...I'm enthralled by basslines like that. And the chord progression liberties near the end...it's just so triumphant, so full of heart and passion for this song and the series. Kudos to this arranger. Kudos to the performers. Kudos to Nintendo for cranking these gems out in the first place.
I love the fun of first listens. I heard this arrangement for this first time less than an hour ago. So many smiles. I'm still getting goosebumps.
