  • Today we drive our cheap garage find Ferrari 308 GTB after it sat for over 10 years! This iconic 1979 Ferrari took a lot of work to rebuild, but thanks to our friend Alex, she is back up and running. We paid the price of a Honda Accord for this Ferrari, was that a good deal? This is car number 2 for the our 12 days of Christmas special where we reveal 12 new cars we bought.

The front bumper isn't on the car, and the bigger grill is to fill that space. Put a stock steering wheel back in it so it doesn't look like a Fiero based kit car.

I found it funny how they passed an LFA and they were gawking at the rivian lol. Also the Car Wizard has his own 308 GTB and I believe he said in one of his videos that the grille is an after market upgrade. It does look really good though

Being a 308 GTB owner myself, I loved this vid. Engine still needs some fettling…the pops and crackles are too much. Carbs need adjusting, and possibly ignition timing.
Steering wheel definitely needs to go, and I’m no fan of those (later QV) mirrors. Window trim should be black, not polished shiny bare metal.
I’m a purist, but actually like that aftermarket custom front grill/bumper delete…

Again, you just can't go wrong with a classic Ferrari. Especially something like a 308. They have so much character & a charm, that the newer/modern Ferrari's tend to lack. Great find & beautiful car!
And it's funny you guys mention the Ferrari Mondial. I have a friend that owns a 91 Mondial T. Which has the Ferrari 348 engine. And he completely straight piped it (No cats or mufflers). It sounds absolutely incredible.....!!

The front spoiler is the "deep" OEM version which was an option on later cars. The grille is aftermarket (if the car is US spec it would have come with a very large front bumper to meet US regulations at the time - it appears to be missing on your car). The mirrors are "turbinado"-style I believe, which came on later cars (earlier cars had "California"-style). If you want an OEM-style exhaust I would recommend an ANSA-type, there is a company in Italy that acquired the tooling and makes new reproductions of what was an optional factory-add-on at the time. There are also current reproductions available of the euro-spec bumpers (front and rear), typical upgrade for US-Spec cars and drops about 70lbs from the stock bumpers.

That 288 gto front end might be from Berlinetta Motorsports.
also see - KEAN Interest 308GTB - similar front end - sweet fitment, interior and stance.
cheap mod - sleek Italian leather loafers/slippers are in order! Comfy ones! Fits the pedal box better when you have moose feet!

The 308 GTS that Thomas Magnum drove is what got my interest in Ferrari's. something about cars that appear in tv shows or movies. You should check the youtuber "number 27" who bought a 308GTS. Nothing but problems trying to get it to run right. You should have got the 308GTS. Open air motoring is the only way to fly.Fixed roof cars to me are a crashing bore. Pop off the roof crank up the music and fly.

Sweet car! Love the mirrors and Euro spoiler :) Yes, you have an newer black ‘spoiler’ like I have on my ‘83. I’d say definitely get rid of the red wheel and go to standard black. Nice GTB too btw!!!! I have a GTS but LOVE the GTB and wish I had a cab car. Enjoy the car - they are a ton of fun. Again yours is special in that it’s a GTB and a carb car. Thanks for the vid!!!

FYI, your choke light is on and your water warning light is also on! Your technician should have corrected this, you never use a choke on these and if it's on you're not running the car right! Water(coolant) light should be off, check for a problem! Light clutches are for wimps along with power steering, get with it you millenniums! The front spoiler is simply a 'Euro' spoiler however the inboard front parking lights and grill were recessed to look like a 288GTO, nice touch. Wheels are after market. This motor has fairly low compression(less than 9:1) so high octane is not necessary.

Ferrari did a deep front spoiler as an option but no, the grill, rims and steering wheel are not factory. I know it's personal taste but I think the original European look is the best. On the same line, someone has been at the window frames, which were all black from the factory; I think the black looks much sleeker with the 308 shape.
The clutch shouldn't be that heavy so there may be a routing issue or some lube required for the clutch cable.
The aircon will say Borletti on the controls but Ferrari bought in the major components from York in the US and they're are common with thousands of american classics, so parts can be easily found.
The fuse box is a known weak point but there are replacements available that are much more reliable.
I can't believe someone handed over a car like that without draining the tanks, cleaning out the carbs and putting in some new gas!

100 octane gas is not better than lower octane gas, it’s just different. Do some research about what an octane rating actually means and get the gas that the engine was designed to use. You’ll probably also need to find gas without ethanol since ethanol wasn’t used in the 70’s. It will run better and have more power with the correct fuel.

greetings from Scotland! I've owned a 308 GTS carb car for 25 years, RHD of course....so you have a very nice find , there are some details on the car that I don't think are factory, namely those chrome surround strips that go around all the glass and the windscreen, I've never ever seen that, normally those strips are black. That black spoiler at the back is not factory, just a personal thing but but I'd put the car back to original and get rid of it, some people like them but I'm in the camp that hates them!!! It is a much nicer line and profile without it. Wheels are cool, they are a nice upgrade and have a 288 GTO feel about them. The front nose of the car seems unusual and unique, all 308s had a front bumper (fender) and on your car there is not one, it seems to have been completely removed and the front grill looks bigger to fill the gap, I think the front end looks good with that mod because the USA style fenders were big and protruded quite a bit, here in Europe we consider those US style fenders to be quite ugly to be honest. The red steering wheel looks ghastly...haha....an original one if you can find one will be mega bucks but a nice alternative is a "MOMO Prototipo classic" which has silver spokes with holes and black leather, it looks just like the steering wheel on a Ferrari 246 Dino.....and you can get one for about 300 bucks. You have a really nice car there though, driving it is a real talking point and they do get a lot of attention and it is all positive because people realise it is a classic car....when I take my car out people always stop to talk and admire the car, it is a totally different reaction to driving a modern supercar...people just see a beautiful old car and an enthusiast owner rather than some rich guy in a flashy modern vehicle.....you get judged very differently and positively is what I have found in my ownership.

agree and sounds as though they've already found someone w/some OE bits to take care of the seats. for the right price, this car could be sold as is and be a great DD for someone that can handle the upkeep and not worry about someone breathing in the car. LOL it makes you wonder what someone was thinking, running the crap out of it. though the interior could simply be victim of no leather care or being left out in the AZ sunshine for a season or two.

308 fan here. I'm not a total expert, but a few different things I notice about your car: Obviously the steering wheel and wheels are not stock. The chrome (or polished?) trim around the window frames is not of the 308 GTB/GTS era; those areas should be black. The headlight louvers on U.S. models did not normally come in black until the '83 QV. Same with the rear air diffuser above the rear window; didn't appear until '83. The side mirrors appear to be euro-spec; although this is a U.S. spec car. The prancing horse on the fuse box in front of the passenger seat appears to be an add-on; never seen a 308 with one of those. The front spoiler is the lower, euro-spec version, but sometimes U.S. models did have those. Don't even get me started on that front bumper! Unfortunately, the 308 has long since been one of the most commonly customized Ferraris with tacky details such as gold badging/gold license plate frames, after market wheels/mirrors/steering wheels/shifting levers and even tinted windows. I prefer all stock; even with the long U.S. bumpers (!). This is still a sweet car! You got it for how much??? I love it! I would restore it to full U.S. spec appearance, and then let me drive it!

But what you want to do is a carburetor to EFI conversion, upgrade traditional fuse box for a modern one and then delete the Dual point dual distributors. And throw it on a dino for real tune. Just like car wizards. No that would make great content content

308 mirrors are the same as used on some Ducati bikes, and they all droop on account of the construction
To improve it, remove from door then on the inside where the stalk is secured to the mount base, strip it out and place a steel washer to press and flare the plastic retainer cup and reassemble the stalk mounting, use some silicone on threads of nut and beware not to over tighten or you will break the plastic, just need enough tension to hold assembly firm so that vibration does not have mirror move about but not too tight that it's difficult to adjust it

It's always fun to see a guy finding a Ferrari, a Lambo or an ultra rare Tucker in a barn, and even after years of storage, except a little dust, the car is new, even the tires are not flat, full tank, still with the dealer's label and a nice song from the 80s in the 8-track player starts when he puts the key in the starter (of course battery is also full and ready to go).
And of course, the random guy doesn't find a broken Yugo or a old rusty Ford Pinto but a Ferrari ... OK it's "just" a 308 but it's still a Ferrari, next time maybe a 288GTO or a 166 with serial "Prototipo Ferrari 001" signed by Enzo itself.
Same with the guys who buy abandoned storage boxes, they don't find 70's rotten furniture or disco tapes, of course they discover diamonds, gold, gun from the 1700s, the original and only existing Star Trek actually working tricorder, a lost Van Gogh or the draft of the Declaration of Independance.
And naturally, the previous owner of these marvelous artefacts were too poor to pay the 10 bucks monthly fees...
It's as fake as the guy restoring an old camera with a chainsaw, water and soap et voilà like new🤣.

Honestly when you drive an older car like that you want a heavy clutch and a heavy shifter it makes it feel stronger and more reliable

👍🏼congratulations guys , it’s super beautiful and very cool .. I’m just trying to imagine that nice smell of gas and fumes a car like this make .. How about the lead that was in the gas in the old days , can this engine drive without lead in the gas , or do you put an lead additive in the gas tank ?

Old gas ? Why not drain it out as all you're doing is diluting the crap gas 🙄
