Thank you, Venice is lovely so that's why I keep coming back. And I noticed that the canals are so much cleaner too, the city council is really making an effort to improve the residents quality of life.
Venice is a wonderful city but in summer is almost sinking beneath the waves of tourists. I have usually travelled in winter when the crowds are much thinner. I too like exploring the quiet areas of the city. I love mazes and to me it is so enjoyable to wander and discover this giant maze of alleys and canals. I love to wander on the dark winters nights when the mists can roll in. It is so atmospheric. I am glad to have found your channel. New Sub
Winter in Venice does have a completely different atmosphere and it's a nicer time for the residents as well as there are fewer tourists. It makes the city more human to see people going about their daily lives, rather than groups going from one attraction to the other and it seems as though Venice is a theme park. I had a look at your channel and you've been to some lovely places, I've subscribed to see what other places you go to.
We'd love to visit Venice and Italy as a whole. Like you were not big on crowds though. We enjoyed your visit to the "Jewish Ghetto." So much history, some tragic. We loved the information you passed along and your tour. The Synagogue was so ornate. Lovely ceiling tile. If we were ever to visit we'd do the normal tourist spots, but early, and hopefully light on tourists. (even though we are tourists) but would love to see this too. I've read about it before in works of fiction by Daniel Silva. Would love to see it!
I think that for everyone coming to Venice for the first time seeing the famous sights is a must. Early in the morning or even late in the afternoon is good as the daytrippers either haven't arrived yet or have gone home. One of the most peaceful (yes touristy, but worth doing) is doing a gondola ride. The gondolas travel down the smaller canals through the quieter areas and it's a really lovely way to see the city. I have never heard of Daniel Silva so I looked him up and thanks for mentioning his books, I love thrillers and I think I've exhausted all the books by my favourite authors and literally have to wait for them to write a few book! Daniel Silva's books look like exactly my reading 'cup of tea' so I'll be sourcing a few for my next lot of holiday travels.
Great tour! We’ve only ever been when there have been 5 or so ships in and it can be awful! We want to go out of season and enjoy a quieter Venice. Thanks for opening up this area to us. We’ll definitely give this an explore. I do love wandering the back streets of Venice. So picturesque- top video and one we’ll be referring back to on future. 🍻
Before this trip, the last time I was in Venice it was so horrifically crowded that I was scared the vaporetto I was on would capsize! The huge cruise ships have finally been banned from the Venice lagoon, I think that's made a difference to the amount of people that are around. The Jewish ghetto area was great as there were a few tourists, even doing the organised tour from the Jewish museum there were only 10 of us, but it still felt like you were experiencing a more authentic taste of Venice. It's an easy area to find as it's only about 10minutes from the train station away from the Grand canal.
What an interesting area of Venice to explore! Thanks for the tour! It can be a VERY crowded place! My first and only visit was 1985. It was PACKED with tourists. But I stayed in a Catholic nursery that was closed for the summer. Our host was a very old nun who told us the most amazing stories 💕
A few years back I met some Australian friends in Venice for the day. We decided to go across to Murano Island, the boat was so packed with people I was scared it would capsize. It was horrible! So I did some serious research this time to try and find somewhere quiet and the area surpassed my expectations, it was incredibly interesting. (Doing the tour helped fill out the information, I learnt a lot!)
Liked #17, I appreciate the fact you are covering the non-touristy parts of Venice and away from the popular spots! Also, it is bringing me back the fond memories of my very first Italy city arrival spot when you get off the train station. The exciting moment if seeing the Grand Canal. Walked the whole day very next day and my thing was to eat nothung but gelato the whole day, haha. Thank you so kindly for the thorough researched history lesson of the ghetto quarters on the island. Watched the full video to support, the right way. Happy to support your channel 😎 👍
The view from the train station steps at Venice is stunning, the station was deliberately placed there so that visitors could get that fantastic sight. The Santa Lucia church was originally on that spot and was demolished to build the train station. (It was in the 19th century) that's why the station is called Venezia Santa Lucia.
@@theresabigwideworld2632 Thank you for the reply and the additional information. That was smart to give the grand entrance to grand canal. Happy to support your channel, take care.
Venice does have some not so well known areas, I do think that on your first trip it's good to see the main sights. It's good to explore further if you come again.
Yes....I don't really like crowds either... The outdoors is a peaceful place for me to calm my soul...as well as establish a connection and intimacy with nature...
Venice is lovely but the main tourist areas are very, very crowded so it's nice to find less well known parts of the city to visit. Thanks for watching!
This was such a good tour that you took us on here. Love the architecture and the canal is so beautiful. The Synagogue was lovely inside to see, I've never been in one before. That was interesting to hear that this is where the word ghetto originated and it was nice to hear how the kids had scooters to go home :) Great tour, I loved it , thanks for sharing ~ Anna
I learnt a lot doing the tour of the Jewish ghetto, prior to this trip I thought the word 'ghetto' was something that originated during World War II as in 'The Warsaw Ghetto'. The preschoolers on their scooters was incredibly cute as some of them were so young they didn't know how to scooter so they stood on it and their parent just pulled them along!
I learnt a lot doing the tour with the guide from the Jewish museum. It's nice to find places in popular tourist locations in Italy that are quite peaceful.
Glad to see a different side of Venice and to know places less known. Interesting to learn from you about the Jewish Ghetto's history, the locking of the bridges, and more! Have just subbed so I can go with you as you explore this Big Wide World!😊
Thank you for subbing! I had originally planned just to wander around the Jewish ghetto but I wanted to visit one of the synagogues. The only way I could do that was to join the tour from the Jewish museum. I was so glad I did I learned so much! I had no idea of the history behind the Jewish area of Venice, before this trip I didn't even know there was one! I just googled lesser known areas in Venice.
Venice is really lovely and over the years more of the buildings have been restored so it's looking really good now. Italy has some beautiful cities so it's always a great country to explore. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching!
I am counting on my days to visit Venice, we are planning to go there by September, so happy to see your train journey and thanks for sharing such great information... really happy to be connected with the channel
Hi and thanks, There's a Big Wide World for sharing. Wow, so residents are more likely to use a boat to get by instead of a vehicle... May I ask if the building with some cover on the left is in process of face-lift/painting???...2:36 Nowadays, the old historic buildings are demolished and modern architecture is taking over the town everywhere in the world...which is sad to say. Wow...this is very essential information. Their lives matter and here are some pieces of their lives recognized...3:30 OMG, the synagogue is breathtaking..a little different character with...countless Intricate wooden works that are superb. Well done. Some PPL say Venice is full of visitors at this point, not a good time to visit...What do you think?🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
The building at 2:36 is the Jewish museum and it's in the process of being renovated. The guide said they were hoping that the museum would be open in the next year or so. The little plaques at 3:30 impressed me as well, I saw them before I went on the guided tour. The guide was asked about them and explained that they're called 'stumbling stones' and they're fairly new, a German artist a few years back engraved the first ones for the Roma and Sinti people who were killed in WWII. The project has now been expanded and these plaques are found in different cities in Europe. I came across one just walking down a small street in Trieste marking the home of a resident who lost their life in Auschwitz. The crowds in Venice can be horrific, the last time I went a few years ago, the vaporetto I was on was so crowded I was scared it would capsize! I went this year as I thought there would be fewer people, the big cruise ships are now banned from Venice and that's helped bring down the numbers who walk around the city. It was much better, still a lot of people but not horrific. From next January, daytrippers have to pay a fee to visit Venice. That will help reduce numbers as well.
I should have watched this video before we visited Venice last year as I felt really overwhelmed with it and although we did loads, I didn't experience it how I would usually explore somewhere new and just gently take it all in.

@@theresabigwideworld2632 that’s so good to hear. When the big ships sail out, they dwarf the city and are like huge apartment blocks sailing past!
