Lord Of The Rings Putangirua Pinnacles, Fur Seals & Cape Palliser, WAIRARAPA | NZ Road Trip Vlog 2/3

  • In this second vlog of our 3 part NZ road trip, we continue further down the North Island of New Zealand and even made it to the southernmost tip of the North Island, Cape Palliser.
    For our accommodation, we stayed in Carterton, a small town in the Wairarapa. Our charming cottage was private, spacious and had lots of great character. A really nice stay with a lovely host too.
    Deidre's Airbnb
    www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/41512963
    For breakfast we headed into town and ate at Wild Oats Cafe to make sure we were fueled up for our day ahead. With tasty blueberry pancakes and bacon and egg bagels in our bellies we were good to go.
    Wild Oats Bakery-Deli-Cafe
    Address: 127 High Street North, Carterton 5713
    Hours: Mon-Sun 7am-3pm
    After about an hour's drive from the cafe, we arrived at a place we had wanted to visit for some time, Putangirua Pinnacles. This was a filming location for Lord of the Rings, Return of the King (Paths of the Dead). The Putangirua Pinnacles are badlands and they're an incredible sight to behold. It's an enjoyable and easy-going hike too.
    Our final destination was to get to the lowest point of the North Island of New Zealand which was Cape Palliser Lighthouse. It's only about a half hour drive away from Putangirua Pinnacles and it's an incredibly scenic ride. The best thing though is that the North Island's largest fur seal colony can be found along the way to Cape Palliser Lighthouse.
    Next week will be our last vlog from this NZ road trip where we finally make it to Wellington! See you then :)

    Definitely an 11/10 🏞⛰! What an awesome day...I'm sure as always, the camera doesn't do justice to how incredible the scenery was (though you guys did a great job capturing the beauty!) Loved seeing the fur seals!!!! Glad you guys navigated the treacherous right turn/left turn moment successfully😁👍😁👍. It's interesting the lighthouse was made in England and shipped in parts... seems like something that can be built in NZ😁. Safe travels guys and looking forward to Wellington!

You guys keep adding stuff to my NZ bucket list. Hope I get to see them all. Wow amazing views of the pinnacles! Love how diverse the New Zealand landscape can be. Yeah was gonna say sort of similar to the clay cliffs. Great setting for Lord of the rings. Wow super old gravel. Haha Peter can do anything in jandals 😂 I’m with Yen on the boots 🥾 Aww seals! I was in Cape Palliser just over 10 years ago and I had no idea about Putangirua, damn!
    We took a quad bike drive over Ocean Beach (slightly more to the west, on the other side of Lake Onoke), which has got a fun landmark: the local fishermen use really old bulldozers to pull their boats out of the sea. There is a long line of brightly coloured, rusty bulldozers there, along with some fishermen's cabins. And we saw some of NZ's giant eels in a little puddle - they are super scary!
    I had to giggle at the contrast between Yen with her polyester sweater against the cold and the bare-torsoed Kiwi Viking in the background ;)

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahahaha that was an Englishman and his partner we chatted to them for a bit to make sure neither of us were about to get lost 😂
      O! Nice that you went to Cape Palliser for you enjoy your time there? Would have been so cool to see the giant eels! Never would have imagined finding them in a lil puddle seen them only in underground cave streams.

    • @berttroubleyn3475
      @berttroubleyn3475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterandYen Not getting lost is important out in the wop-wops ;)
      We didn't go to Cape Palliser, and from the looks of it we should have. But when you have only 2 weeks to travel through the whole of New-Zealand, you barely scratch the surface of what's to be seen.
      The eels were super scary. It was somewhere in the grounds of the lodge we were staying and someone from the staff dangled a dead chicken from a stick. The violent snapping at the carcass from the eels with their giant bodies is the stuff of nightmares. You don't want those guys thinking your toes look tasteful...

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😅 my the thought of getting my toes chewed off from giant eels is nightmare material 😂
      You're totally right 2 weeks is no where near enough. But it will give you fond memories and a desire to go back which I think is a good thing. After 2 months in Vietnam I still have that hahaha

    Another great video Peter and Yen. The Wairarapa is one of my favorite regions in NZ. Did you check out the small fishing village of Ngawi not far from Cape Palliser? I'm sure you would have seen all the bulldozers on the beach. White Rock is another stunning location that not many people go to. The tiny little church at Pirinoa that is featured in so many astro shoots on IG. Lake Ferry, Stonehenge Aotearoa. It's endless. • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traveling by car and bnb is definitely more expensive than motor home for a family of 4. You would probably save $50 nzd or more by going with campervan. The big disadvantage however is you will be constricted in the areas you can go as the camper is very large. Both would be great choices but personally yen and I just enjoy the space of an airbnb as well as proper bathrooms. Hope that helps
