  • On 9 March 1966, a teenager named George Best almost single-handedly destroyed Benfica as Manchester United won the European Cup quarter-final second leg 5-1 in Lisbon.
At the age of just 19, Best’s brilliant performance against the Portuguese champions, capped with two goals in the first 13 minutes, kickstarted the remarkable career as both a footballing genius and a cultural icon.
Reports written by stunned local journalists in Lisbon took over the front pages of the national newspapers. Full of criticism for Benfica's laid-back approach and uninspired performance, the Portuguese press did not hide their admiration for United’s quality of football.
Underneath its famous headline, 'A Beatle called Best smashed Benfica', the front-page article in A Bola continued:
"Best, the young Northern Irish international, exceeded all the reputation that he had. His dribbling, his spectacular ball control, the ease and spontaneity, overwhelmed not only all of Benfica's defence but also the entire Portuguese team. His first two goals delivered a profound blow to the Benfica team, from which they never recovered. A name that leaves a reputation in Portugal only a selected few can match."

Strange, how oversea's football publications, journalist's & fans, hold Bobby Charlton, as the greatest British football player. ( he regularly appears higher in their polls than any Brit player ).
While in Britain. It's universally held, that Best was the greatest natural talent from those shores.
I think Bobby's exposure for England on the World Cup stage & winning the World Cup in style. While playing, superb technical football. Is why he's revered overseas, higher than any British player.

Yeah, I'd imagine that the lack of a notable international tournament plays a huge role in how he's rated. Although I'd imagine that anyone who saw him near his peak wouldn't question his stance as the most naturally gifted British player of all-time.

@DDeglane16 Very much so. And when you factor in elite consistency & longevity. Charlton is the clear winner.
His 1970 World Cup performances were terrific, like his 1966 World Cup display's.
Against Brazil, especially in the 1st half. He was the best player on the pitch.
Rivellino said, he was designated to mark Charlton & couldn't get near him!
And against Germany in the Qtr Final, he was giving Germany & Beckenbauer the run around. Germany only took control of the match when Charlton came off.
The kicker was...He was doing all of these things, in sun drenched conditions, on baked potato pitches, age 33!🤯

The greatest talent, he deserves to be spoken about in the dame breath as Eusebio, Puskas, Cruff, Pele and Maradonna, not sure if Ronaldo or Messi fit in the same pantheon
