    Thursday: Typing sins.
    Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

    Fun Fact about this film a lot of the 'extra's who you see dancing are actually locals who live on the Island and asked if they could join in. The people on the docks dancing were all locals living on the island originally not intended to be in the film!

    buuuuuuuut seriously, a lot of these sins were accurate (pierce brosnan's singing voice deserved like 10) but even more of them weren't valid. you can't sin a musical for having music, or at most, you can only sin it once. anyone who goes to see mamma mia knows what they're getting into.

      @harshmnr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Now see this is actually another thing that should be a sin I think, because it makes no sense that Donna and Sam can be married. Correct me if I'm wrong and maybe the laws are different in Greece but before you get married you need an actual marriage license from the city hall or something; the ceremony is just a ceremony but if you have the license before that you're technically already married. So really Sophie and Sky would be married already, and Donna and Sam's marriage wouldn't be official until they got a license. You don't get married just by having a priest say "I pronounce you man and wife." 😂

      Natalie Harshman many places you c an have a religious ceremony which is just that, a ceremony ( without legal value to the government), but with a lot of value to the people that are taking part. But that said, some places ( religious places) wouldn’t marry a couple just like that either, without checking them, having them be part in the religious community, or have a future legal contract etc. though I’ve seen a few without those.

At first I thought maybe you just didn't have a problem with it (despite it's being up there with the most egregious of sins) but at 13:40, you say Pierce is interrupting Sophie's reception, when she's already passed that baton, and he can talk as much as he wants at his own reception.

    I think you should cut this movie a lot of slack. I mean, it's a musical, and every musical has an equal portion of cheese and cringe. And this was originally written as a Broadway musical, so I think that makes it even harder to be masterfully transferred to cinema, unlike with musicals intended to be movies and musicals based off of books. Movies based off of plays have much less creative liberty than ones bases on books or original ones, and plays naturally have a thing about them that makes them weird to be turned into movies. Although this movie has a lot of cringe-worthy and cheesy moments, I still find it enjoyable because it is fun and certainly has a unique story, and it is also set on an awesome Mediterranean island. It's one of those fun, feel good, and delightfully cheesy movies that are hard to dislike.

    So many 'Sins' and you forgot the most obvious one. The time loop hole:
    Donna met these guys during the Flower power era according to "Our last summer". Let's say 1974 to make it more plausible.
    So Sophie was born in 1975. The musical is set in 2004, the movie in 2008. Which would make Sophie somewhere between 29 and 33 played by 23 year old Seyfried. And they say that Sophie is 20 years old several times...
    And where did she meet these obviously English best friends that has never been to Greece or this island when she has grown up and spent her whole life on this island.

    You should stop doing videos for musicals if you're going to criticize it for being a musical, especially if it is the film adaptation of a Broadway musical. They sing every 5 seconds because it's almost a carbon copy of the Broadway show, and Broadway musicals are known for singing every 5 seconds. I'm not sure why you're so surprised this movie is a musical.

      Katie Aviss I'm not new here. In fact, I've been here so long, I remember when CinemaSins didnt nitpick like this and when they actually did research to produce some quality material. Sinning a musical for having music is like sinning an action movie for having action scenes or a romance for having kissing scenes. It's just lazy writing to sin the musical for having music, not just once, but at least 4 times. Sorry I dont ride CS's dick like the rest of this comment section and can actually form an opinion

    You forgot that the majority of the people in Greece are Orthodox, so that priest at the wedding is dressed in completely the wrong clothes. He wouldn't pass as Catholic, either, which is the other prominent Christian "branch" in southern and western Europe.

      Pretty much nonexistent, as catholics amount to less than 1% of the population. However, the people involved in the marriage are probably not Orthodox, so it would make sense not to invite a local priest.

    • @sailiealquadacil1284
      @sailiealquadacil1284 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinkint about that, too, but - didn't Donna raise her daughter in Greece? So if she wanted to practise her faith, she'd have to join a local community, and that would (most likely) be an orthodox one, and you can bet the groom is orthodox, too. So it makes very little sense to bring in an American priest. I mean, I know there are people who will join a church just for the wedding and then leave again, but I kinda doubt that's the case here, either.

      Lilian Achura Based on Donna's character and backstory (this movie and in trailors for the sequel), I highly doubt she was religious. We also don't know where she was raised or anything so that also plays a factor. Sophie would almost definetely follow suit because that's how she's been brought up. Sky's background is also unknown. However, as Sophie says, he would rather get married quickly in jeans and "wash it down with a bottle of beer". Literally he's only getting married for Sophie. He's probably not religious or at least he doesn't care enough to care who marries them.
      Long story short, it doesn't really matter to them who's the officiant as long as the marriage will be legally recognized.

      Look, I *love* ABBA, and I say it proudly, and I know Bjorn and Benny are behind the play, but . . . geez. The first hurdle it has going for it is the same one that all jukebox musicals have going for them: No matter how well the performers can sing, all their singing does is to remind you that *they aren't the people you want to hear singing those songs.* And in the second place, *THEY CAST A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SING.* At least the sequel has Cher, who CAN sing . . . but Cher is not Anni-Frid, and THAT's who I want to hear doing "Fernando."
      You want a movie that honors ABBA and doesn't fall into the jukebox musical trap, watch Muriel's Wedding.

      This comment was a long time ago but I was just in the musical and the script for the movie and the musical are SO different; the musical's script is a lot dirtier (we had to censor parts of it), a lot of the songs that are in the musical aren't in the movie (Under Attack, Knowing Me Knowing You, etc.). A lot of the songs that are there are moved around in the movie (Take A Chance On Me happens before the wedding scene, Winner Takes It All happens in the scene before that, etc.) And the music/vocals are slightly different; the ending belt of Winner Takes It All is a C5, not....whatever Meryl was singing.

    • @thrashdivision7625

      @@elenafahmi9955 Not to mention that in the musicals script Sam proposing to Donna feels much more deserved than the movie. Sam had actual character development and Harry had a bit more too. Harry singing Our Last Summer with Donna in the musical feels way more in place because it was THEIR summer, having all 3 of the dads singing it and telling those experiences to Sophie felt extremely weird. Also it might be a nitpick but I can't get over the change in sound mixing (Idk what it qualifies as) when the movie jumps from dialogue to song

    • @elenafahmi9955
      @elenafahmi9955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thrash Division I think it’s just transitions; the movie didn’t really have any transitions from speaking to singing it’s just talktalktalkYOU CAN DANCE, and it comes out of nowhere. In the musical, the beginning instrumentals are backed up a little bit underneath the dialogue so that when they start singing, it’s not something that came out of nowhere.

      Most of them aren't great, but not terrible either. I actually really like Pierce Brosnans singing voice

      Actually Christine Baranski, who plays Aunt Tanya can sing really well. She’s in a few musicals, including Chicago.

    Remember when sins were actual technical or plot mistakes... Instead of this 'I don't like the music or singing'.

      I have to say, I really really *want* to hate this movie, but I just can't. My sister loves it too much, and I love my sister too much, for me to really hate it. I just know it's not meant for people like me. That's fine.

    The sin that bothered me was at the end when he talks about the reception being for Sophie's wedding, if he didn't fell asleep he would know that Sky and Sophie never got married and Donna and Sam did.
