- Martin Lawrence was one of the most popular comedians of the 1990s and early 2000s. He began his career in comedy as a stand-up comedian in Washington D.C.
It was not until he moved to New York City and got his breakthrough role on Spike Lee’s acclaimed movie Do The Right Thing, however, that Lawrence started gaining prominence for his work. In the '90s, he starred on his own sitcom, Martin, and became a movie star when he starred alongside Will Smith on the hit action-comedy Bad Boys.
Lawrence had a streak of hit movies in the late '90s and 2000s but his career has since waned. Don’t put it past Lawrence to make a comeback but here’s the real reason you don’t hear from Martin Lawrence anymore.

Black Knight was hilarious! It's one of my favorite Martin Lawrence films. The scene where he's in the court trying to get the minstrels to play a song and they end up playing Dance to the Music. GOLD. That was a great movie. Underrated and maybe under-appreciated. I've come across a ton of people lately that love the movie giving it a fat thumbs up.

I'm a big fan of Martin's! I enjoyed the movies that were said to have underperformed, but maybe that's just me. Maybe his Showtime special didn't do well cuz of lack of advertisement. I never knew he did that. The first thing I remember seeing him on was the reboot of the show What's Happening. It was called What's Happening, Now. That was years before his Martin tv show. I still enjoy watching the reruns of that, and I have all the DVDs. I would love to see him do more.
I think you should give Martin his “just do” considering bad boys 3 just finished production. Martin Lawrence is a prominent and relevant black comedian and actor. Made many classics.
